The Arcade Fire melted Madison Square Garden tonight.
    #13004821 -

Saw The Arcade Fire at Madison Square Garden tonight. They sold it out, with Spoon and Owen Pallett opening.  I've seen them in pretty much every size room in New York City - Mercury Lounge (250 capacity), Knitting Factory, Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall, Irving Plaza, Randall's Island - and now Madison Square Garden. I knew the show would be good but I wondered if they would really pull it off. I listened to the new album twice today before the show, and it's good - really good.  Better than Neon Bible. (Funeral is pretty unbeatable.)

But man. Wow!  From the first to the last note they absolutely fucking KILLED it.  Completely and utterly epic.  One of the best live performances I've ever seen, and that's competing with hundreds and hundreds...wow.  Just wow. I'm glowing.

Tomorrow night they do it again, and the concert will be streaming live on YouTube, directed by Terry Gilliam - director of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, among other amazing films!  Check it out if you can.

I saw them as first of three (!!!) opening for Chromeo and The fucking Unicorns back in like..early 2004?  I was like, who is this?

Then in October of that year my friend was like "hey come see this band headline Saturday night of CMJ Music Marathon"...I squeeze into the Mercury Lounge and it's packed, a frenzy, wall to wall.  These people are on stage with accordions and violins and the percussionists are wearing motorcycle helmets and they are drumming on each other's heads.  It was love at second sight.

Hahah, thats sweet man. Frying and listening to funeral completely blew
me away.

They are such a talented group, I hold them to a high standard, and to be
honest kind of expected more from the new cd, though it is rather good.

They will always, always walk in the shadow of the untouchable perfection of Funeral...we'll always expect more from them, and always get something great anyway.

skatealex2, do you live near the city? Totally worth the price of admission, ESPECIALLY if you come early enough to catch Owen Pallett (8) and Spoon (8:45).  AF goes on at 10:15.

Which album?  Heartland?  One of my favorite records of last year for sure...you should check out his older stuff under the moniker Final Fantasy, especially He Poos Clouds and Has A Good Home.  He writes all of the Arcade Fire's string arrangements, he was an original member.  He's great live - he does an Andrew Bird loop machine sort of thing.

I think of him as a Canadian Andrew Bird.

Bird?  No, Andrew Bird was an engineer/member of the Squirrel Nut Zippers and then struck out and released his first solo record in 1996.

I prefer Bird's work to the Zippers' work for sure. He has a ton of great records!
