I've never fooled with a straight razor.  I'd probably hurt myself.  I use a Mach 3, it does the job.

I have both, I use shaving soap. I also have an electric that I use just to get the hair off more or less, other shaving is a bigger deal.

Havent used the straight razor in a while, havent had time to use it or get it ready

You ever use that thing for manscaping?  One false move and you're fucked.

I switched from a Gillette Fusion to a safety razor about 6 months ago, and haven't looked back.  With cartridge razors, I needed at least a day or 2 between shaves to allow the razor burn to heal.  I would always buy the latest and greatest cartridge razor the minute it came out, and tried just about every shaving cream out there, hoping to eliminate the problem, but nothing seemed to work.  After reading a thread here about safety razors, I did some more research and found out that multi-blade razors were the real problem because as they pass over the skin, they will bunch up the skin between the blades, which causes irritation.  After making the switch I have been razor burn free for the last 6 months, and can shave every day if I want to.  My safety razor even shaves closer than any razor I have ever used.  The only drawback is that it is much easier to cut yourself, and the cuts tend to be much nastier than with the cartridge.  You just have to be careful.  I think most of my cuts come from trying to shave after a few beers.  Alcohol and razors don't mix!

Oh, I think after the last poster (Happy2fly) I must not have understood what you meant.

I thought you where asking about disposable type blades and straight razor, but you are talking about the one with the BIG razor blades that usually twist open.

I thought about those. I thought about the double or triple blade razors bunching up the skin and what not, but declined to try the safety razor method, due to expense (in case I didnt like it)

It is a bit of an investment getting started, but the blades are cheap as fuck.  I spent about $100 for the razor, brush, soap, and about 50 blades.  My Fusion was around $10 with 2-3 cartridges, and then refills were $25 for 8 cartridges (or $3.13 ea).  The safety razor blades only cost around $15 for 100 blades, which make them only $0.15 each.  Because I can now shave every day, instead of every other, I probably use a blade a week instead of 1 cartridge every 2 weeks.  After 1 year, the cost of blades is $7.80 for safety vs $81.38 for Fusion cartridges.  It adds up quick!

I can understand not wanting to make the investment in case you won't like it.  If you ever decide to take the plunge, I don't think you will be disappointed.  If you do end up liking it, you will save money in the long run.  In my case, my razor burn was so bad that I would do anything to find a solution.  I am so glad I found that thread as I always though that the safety razors were old technology.  I found out that razor technology is going down the same road as music, sacrificing quality for convenience..

Safety razor all the way. I don't have the steady hand needed for a straight razor, one slip and you're mutilated. If you are reasonably careful you dont ever have to nick yourself with a safety razor.

THE razor combination is a Merkur 34C with Derby Extra blades.

I use the safety razor I found while cleaning out my grandpas house. It definitely cuts down on the razor burn
