Outdoor tek in the Desert?

Well, with the sun starting to show again, and snow comming off the ground, ive got a hankering to do some outdoor cultivation...with spent cakes. The possible problem is i live in a "semi arrid desert" location...claybanks, sagebrush, 35-45 degree celsius weather throughout the summer...Is it possible to have an outdoor bed with such high tempertures? How often should it be watered? Thank you all, any insight will be much appreciated.

It seems like that would be a bit of a problem. Substrate moisture may be easy to maintain, but to fruit you need to have a high relative humidity, something that may not be easy to pull off in the desert. Because Fungi don't have a waxy cuticle like plants, they lose water rapidly to their environment.

Never snows here ........ BOWELS OF HELL ! But have been working on a mister green house to try to solve humidity problem myself . Have design idea, but no pics . I royally suck at using cpu to make schematics , I'll try to describe it . Get some schedule 40 pvc half inch diameter , build a frame that stands above and around your planned sight , install some of those mister jets along the top , and on the riser points of the frame , do not forget to put a hose connector on bottom corner of one side (to attach garden hose to ) . Hook up and you got a mister system to help maintain humidity , can cover box assembly with some 3 ml plastic to act like a green house . Again sorry I have no drawn schematics , will keep you in mind and try to get pics of one I'm trying to build , if you are interested .

The only way I could see you pull it off there is if you had a greenhouse or cold frame. And you'd have to mist it bigtime and keep it out of direct sunlight.

its possible..
Cover your beds with pasturized straw, and like armfromabyss said, keep it out of direct sunlight. The pasurized straw will help to keep the humidity, its what they use to germinate grass seed around here. You will probably have to attend to it and take tender loving care of it.
I dont live in a desert region but its pretty dry where i am, im pretty much on a sand dune plane...lots of jack pine and brush here...its pretty dry in the summer but i have pulled some nice EQ's out of the ground with just two spent cakes that i threw down covered with straw and potting soil, i only got one flush though.\
i think chances are you can pull it off, you did say you were going to use spent cakes right? in that case you have nothing to lose

Wow, thanks All, like ODhaze said, ill be using spent cakes so theres nothing to lose. I thought of a good area where i like to go to a toke, where i may try it. Its a rocky hike up to a water fall, surrounded mostly be pine trees. The ground is mostly covered in rotted grasses/pineneedles/broken down branches, mosses, and things like that...and because of the waterfall is a rather humid area, and cooler than most of town. I wont be able to tend to it in this area more than a couple times a week, so i was thinking i would just use my cakes, straw, dung...and some wet peralite in a hole, and make a frame using logs...landscape ties...something of the sort, to support a piece of clear plastic overtop loosely, and maybe even a tabacco can or two of wet peralite dug into the ground...just to allow moisture to condense on the plastic. Id love to hear your opinions on the subject or my little scheme. Thanks so much for the replies thus far.

That is definately a humid area. Mosses'spores are motile in water, and can only be transferred if an area is moist enough for them to swim where they need to go. Near a waterfall sounds good for humidity too.
Coniferous forest floors are usually pretty acidic, and may not be great for P. cubs. What you may want to do is add a lot of some sort of buffer to the area where you plan to grow them. You should check the pH every few weeks too to make sure that diffusion of H+ is not so rapid you can't keep up.
Doesn't sound much like a desert to me though...

good thought with the soil acidity, i thought about that too when i did my "test" outdoor bed. All i did though was make a "bowl" of potting soil in the ground,
it worked!
i dont think there will be anyproblem with growin cubes where you are....

heh, Sorry! I though i might confuse some of you with my desert with a waterfall! Im sorry, im just outside of the okanagan in BC, we have fucking 40 below winters, and 45+ summers....sometimes random forest fires are starting all over from the heat, sometimes were bloody flooding. Its considered a desert though.
