grapefruit juice?

From what I've heard, grapefruit juice inhibits the breakdown of a wide variety of drugs, prolonging and intensifying the effects. However, I've heard very little specific information on this capacity of grapefruit juice, and so I've never tried it.

Is it true? How does it work and what drugs does it work with? Could I use it to enhance, say, the potency of prescription amphetamines and opiates?

well if you look up the lemon juice tek you should get some info.

there is defiantly something about citrus fruit that increases potency
most people believe it's the acidity

Grapefruit isn't the same as the other citrus fruits, it has a different active chemical.

I've used it to potentate DXM fairly successfully

I know grapefruit juice is to opiates as baking soda is to amphetamines.  Enormous potentiation.

"Grapefruit  and grapefruit juice have the potential to interact with numerous drugs. A number of organic compounds, identified as furanocoumarin derivates, interfere with the hepatic and intestinal  enzyme  cytochrome P450 isoform CYP3A4 and are therefore primarily responsible for the interaction. However, bioactive compounds in grapefruit juice may also interfere with P-glycoprotein and organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs) either increasing or decreasing bioavailability of a number of drugs."

The following drugs are affected by CYP3A4 inhibition with grapefruit compounds:

    * The benzodiazepines triazolam, midazolam, alprazolam and quazepam
    * Ritonavir inhibits CYP3A4 preventing the metabolism of protease inhibitors

Additional drugs found to be affected by grapefruit juice include, but are not limited to:

    * Statins such as atorvastatin, lovastatin, and simvastatin with the exception of Pravastatin which is unaffected.
    * Dihydropyridines including felodipine (Plendil), nicardipine (Cardene), difedipine, nisoldipine (Sular), nitrendipine (Bayotensin)
    * losartan (Cozaar)
    * The cough suppressant dextromethorphan
    * repaglinide (Prandin)
    * verapamil (Calan SR, Covera HS, Isoptin SR, Verelan)
    * buspirone
    * Antiarrhythmics including amiodarone (Cordarone), dronedarone (Multaq), quinidine (Quinidex, Cardioquin, Quinora), disopyramide (Norpace), propafenone (Rhythmol), and carvedilol
    * Cisapride (which treats GERD)
    * The male impotence drugs sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra)
    * The anti-migraine drugs ergotamine (Cafergot, Ergomar) and nimodipine (Nimotop)
    * Fluvoxamine (Luvox, Faverin, Fevarin and Dumyrox)
    * Codeine and Tramadol. It reduces the amount of codeine converted by CYP3A4 into norcodeine thus increasing the amount metabolised into morphine.[citation needed] Morphine itself, however, is not affected by grapefruit juice, as it is not metabolised by the cytochrome P450 system.
    * Cyclosporine. Blood levels of cyclosporine are increased if taken with grapefruit juice. A plausible mechanism involves the combined inhibition of enteric CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein, which potentially leads to serious adverse events (eg, nephrotoxicity).Blood levels of Prograf [Tacrolimus] can also be equally affected for the same reason as it does with Cyclosporine [both drugs are in the Calcineurin Inhibitor family]
    * Omeprazole
    * Zolpidem (Ambien) Increased effect.
    * Oxycodone (Oxycodone is metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system, specifically CYP3A4, of which the bergamottin flavonoid is a strong inhibitor)
    * Quetiapine (Seroquel, Ketipinor) [citation needed]
    * Methadone Inhibits the metabolism of methadone and raises serum levels.
    * Buprenorphine Metabolized into norbuprenorphine by cytochrome-P450 isoenzyme 3A4
    * Marijuana Oral ingestion
    * Psilocybin [citation needed]
    * Trazodone (Desyrel) Reports have indicated users experiencing little to no effect.
    * Anthelmintics (Used for treating certain parasitic infections, includes Praziquantel Albendazole Mebendazole)
    * Slow release versions of drugs are affected by grapefruit, causing the entire dosage to be metabolized at once.
    * Carbamazepine (Tegretol) Grapefruit or grapefruit juice slows the breakdown of this drug, increasing the level of it in blood

I have done it with xanax. I sip on a big glass for about half an hour before I plan on taking the xanax. But take half as much xanax as you would normally!!! Doing this may effect people much stronger than others! and you need the NOT FROM CONCENTRATE kind. I just get Tropicana because most other brands are from concentrate and you can find Tropicana anywhere. I do not remember if red or yellow makes a difference, but I'm sure you can find that out.

Hmm, I've been taking zantac to enhance my adderall being as how having a basic stomach apparently enhances absorption, but not tried baking soda. Zantac seems not to do that much, though.

Considering the acidity of grapefruit juice, guessing it would actually not work well to potentiate amphetamines.

But as for opiates, that's what I'm looking for right now... I've got eight of these vicodins I don't really need left, and I want to get the most out of them that I can.

Hmm, well according to twighead's list, it only works for tramadol and oxycodone.  Personally, I've heard that it works for all opiates, but I've only used it for oxycodone.

Only one way to find out, right? I'll pick up some grapefruit juice (and some baking soda for tomorrow :laugh:) on the way home from work and let you guys know how it goes.

If you look at the side effects and warnings included with a Xanax prescription, it specifically warns against drinking grapefruit juice since it potentates it so much.

Personally I've had great success with a variety of benzos and opiates.
