Any specific Peat.......
    #1282115 - 02/05/03 01:28 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I'm gonna go out and get some peat moss soon for my first casing and I was wondering if there are any particular types/brands that I should stay away from? What are your recommendations?

That's what I was planning on doing 6C   I meant, is there any specific type of peat moss I should buy?  One with more benefits, etc?

Try to get very little fertilzier if any at all. I am using potting mix right now and there is a little bit of fert. in it. I hope it will be ok though.

PEAT IS PRETTY MUCH PEAT , Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss is most common , yes be carefull some companies do put fungicides in them , but very few in certain regions only . 2.2 cubic litre bag costs aprox 8$ , is enough to last you many seasons depending on scale of projects

typo edits ...... 2.2 cubic foot bag , "Premier" is the maker of a good clean peat , gotta pick a few sticks here and there , but well worth it !

I can't find Jiffy Mix around my area.  I can't even find it online.  Besides, I'd rather mix it myself.  I don't trust "Jiffy"

You used 3 , 2.2 cubic bags , or little bags you buy in grocery stores ?
2.2 cubic bag weighs about 15 - 20 lbs I guess , is quite a bit .

You would be wise to READ THIS. The pH of peat differs, from source to source. Adding a casing mix that is not pH balenced, is like covering a substrate with cement. Generaly, resulting in pins around the edges, rather than all over. 6T

Yeah like using too much hydrated lime ! I 'll stick with slightly acidic , I'm done for awhile playing with ph of casings . Got all the goodies now ie test strips from med lab 3.0 - 14 ranges , but I lost interest after that last massive murdering of mycelium . By the way thanx again for helping me with that hard learned lesson .
As per 6T quote ..............
"HYDRATED LIME IS TOO HOT !" Words of the wise ! Less is best !

Those little bags cost like 4$ each , go to home depot and get bag I mentioned 2.2 cubic foot 8$ is aprox 30 times more than those little guys , will last you longer than one month , or allow you to really go nuts and expand !

Thanks for the info guys, 6T.  I'll be using crushed oyster shell as a pH buffer.  Still a little unclear as to what the verm/peat mix to calcium carbonate ratio should be...

I'll be casing Maz's (first time growing them)   Anyone have any interesting Mazatapec stories?
