I think we should cut all the social parasites from their welfare checks. Then they will either find a means to support themselves or starve to death, either of wich is good for the economy and society.

Byrd was essentially a reformed Jesse Helms.

While we'll never know if he truly changed and regretted his past or simply adapted (as many of the old Dixiecrats did) to remain viable in a modern political climate, I like to think the former applies.

I wish him no ill will, but the accolades got old after day two.

Actions speak louder then words. He made the above quote at 27, and he voted against civil rights at 47. He was not a child. It's pretty nieve to think someone changes after that age

You're absolutely right. I'm familiar with Byrd joining the filibuster of the Civil Rights Act.

As I said, hoping he changed is little more than a pipe dream.
