Vision Serpents, Bloodletting & Drum Circles
    #12757928 -

I was at a festival, on some extremely clean and potent LSD, and became involved in a drum circle.
I quickly went into a complete trance, where I let go control of my body with the rhythm of the drums.
I was looking at myself from above, seeing visions in my mind's eye.
I saw a distinctive red Mayan serpent flowing in my peripheral- it was flying around pulsing to the beats.

^^This is exactly what the vision looked like^^

At this point I was going into a drumming frenzy, beating my hands against the skin of my drum so hard that my right hand started bleeding a bit...
But I couldn't stop; my life depended on putting every ounce of my being into it, so I continued for an unknown amount of time.
I simultaneously felt that the blood was some sort of trans-dimensional offering to this entity.
I was not unsettled at this realization- I felt completely at peace.
I was shown that everyone present was all part of a different familial lineage, but we were all one human family, reuniting in this circle.
I could feel each person's DNA intermingling with mine, spiritually. I felt unbelievable unity and interconnectedness with everything around me.

So just today I decided to do some Google searches on bloodletting and serpent imagery, and I found what's known as the "Vision Serpent".

From Wiki:

Quote:
The Vision Serpent is thought to be the most important of the Maya serpents. During Maya bloodletting rituals, participants would experience visions in which they communicated with the ancestors or gods. These visions took the form of a giant serpent "which served as a gateway to the spirit realm." The ancestor or god who was being contacted was depicted as emerging from the serpent’s mouth. The vision serpent thus came to be the method in which ancestors or Gods manifested themselves to the Maya. Thus for them, the Vision Serpent was direct link between the spirit realm of the gods and the physical world.

The Vision Serpent goes back to earlier Maya conceptions, and lies at the center of the world as they conceived it. "It is in the center axis atop the World Tree. Essentially the World Tree and the Vision Serpent, representing the king, created the center axis which communicates between the spiritual and the earthly worlds or planes. It is through ritual that the king could bring the center axis into existence in the temples and create a doorway to the spiritual world, and with it power."

The Vision Serpent is prevalent in Bloodletting ceremonies, in Maya religious practices, Maya jewelry, pottery and their architecture.

Many have attempted to explain the manifestation of the Vision Serpent in association with Maya bloodletting. One conclusion is "that massive blood loss causes the brain to release an abundance of natural endorphins, which are chemically related to opiates. As the body goes into shock, a hallucinatory vision occurs." Once the actual bloodletting was over, the blood soaked ceremonial papers were burned, releasing a column of smoke. The smoke provided the perfect medium for the Vision Serpent to appear. Every major political or religious event involved bloodletting because it provided a medium by which the gods could be called upon to witness and actually participate in the ceremony. Sometimes the spirits of ancestors were also called upon to give guidance. The Hauberg Stela (A. D. 199) from the Maya Lowlands "is one of the first dated monuments that depict the Vision Serpent's connection to bloodletting".

One of the most common rituals associated with the Vision serpent involved invoking ancestral sprits. Especially during coronation rites, the kings would contact the spirits for guidance and blessings. It is the Vision Serpent who provides the medium for contacting these deities.

Remnants of the Vision Serpent have survived until modern times. Around 1930, J.E.S. Thompson noted in San Antonio, Belize, that the Q'eqchi' Maya still performed a ritual very similar to the vision quest of the classic Maya, although in a different context. The ritual marked the initiation of a new shaman for the village. The participant came into direct contact with a giant serpent, Ochan (Och-Kan). It was through this experience that he completed his initiation rites and gained the knowledge that is needed to become a powerful shaman.

This is pretty crazy, because I didn't know of this prior to the experience.

I've had serpent-themed trips before, and actually seen visions of blood before, but never was actual blood involved.

I didn't feel like this entity was foreign... but somehow connected to me, and it was not unwelcome to encounter it.

Thoughts?  :aweoverdose:

Sweet man. That was a sacred experience. I'm surprised you saw as much as you did with such little blood sacrifice -- I hope you were careful with your interaction. Did you make any additional agreements for knowledge?

If you ever get a chance to read the Quiche Mayan creation story the Popol Vuh you might find some interesting links as well. Blood is the most coveted offering and lineage is truly the central theme of many of the stories.

And lastly, if I may, what is your lineage? From where do you hail?

Thanks for the non-judgmental attitude, seriously.. I wasn't sure if I should post about it or not.

Actually I didn't see that much vividly, besides the serpent itself and some telepathic impressions of blood or life transferring between us.
The rest was more along the lines of things I felt, rather than viewed.

It felt like an energy exchange- I think any agreements may have already been made on previous trips.
I have had a much darker trip where I saw the image of the Ouroboros (snake swallowing itself), and felt like a psychic agreement was being made during that experience.
That was like 5 years ago though... I am unsure if this was the same entity, but I didn't feel any fear or hesitation this time around.

You know, I wasn't told so much in words, but all my life I've heavily identified with ancient Indian and Egyptian cultures... I feel I am strongly tied in with both.

The non-judgment comes from knowledge of the culture. The serpent is entwined with creation in every culture I know. The Mayan traditions are no exception and actually place the serpent as co-creator of our world. The power of the sea interacting with the power of the sky.

There is a story in the Popol Vuh of the god of fire, Tohil, making a deal with the tribes to give them fire. But in return he tricks them into giving him a sacrifice. Unknowingly, their blood... all of it. Only one tribe avoided the trick, the bat clan. Eventually Tohil collects his due tribute and all the other clans are slaughtered in his name.

In other words, be very careful of what you agree to. There is power to be gained in blood, so long as you don't give too much. Human sacrifices existed for a reason. The blood of a human is extremely valuable.

Very interesting, and good advice...

I've also had earlier visions where dual cosmic serpents (in the form of DNA) actually created and maintain what we know as reality...

I'm not sure if I actually believe that, but it was specifically shown to me on an early mushroom trip.

I don't have any plans on doing any more "bloodletting", but I must say, this recent experience was powerful and amazing, with absolutely no fear present.

This is a very real issue this absence of fear. I suppose it matters what you believe in, but personally I wouldn't play in such realms without a very heavy dose of caution. Being fearless isn't really the problem, it is the decisions you make when you're fearless that are. The instant you think nothing can go wrong is the same instant you make a decision that seals your fate.

Consider this: Why do all powerful gods want something that you have? Should you freely give it to them without any consideration of this question?

Wouldn't it be more dangerous to be consumed by fear during these experiences?
When we're in that state of pure fear or despair, I feel that we're most vulnerable.

Where is the line between caution and fear? I agree, there should be caution, but to what degree?
Beyond caution, you should be comfortable in yourself and your boundaries, before interacting with these forces.

In my earlier Ouroboros experience I alluded to, I was in a state of overwhelming fear and even terror, at the sheer power of the force in my presence.
I felt like I was nothing but an ant on an ant farm, an experiment among many.. I didn't know how to cope with such power, and I feel I was traumatized by it.

That's what makes this recent experience so much more rewarding for me.. I felt completely comfortable and at ease.
I don't feel I incurred any negative effects this time around- which I suppose could be an illusion, but then again everything could be.
I'm going to trust my instincts on this one, and say it was a symbiotic exchange by both parties.

Prolly like a week ago or so , i had  a dream where my pet lizard was eating his own tail.
Didn't really know what to make of it and didn't really think of asking.

It is well known that lizards store nutrients in their tale , so if i had to make any sense of it , it would be the idea that the lizard was hungry , being that i hadn't fed him for a couple days longer than usual.

Still confusing a bit..
but hey.. mystery is cool.

dono about ur experience tho..
i try to stay away from  festivals or big gatherings of people doing psychedelics.
i see them as feeding grounds literally.
too much energy released and too many noobs.

from my personal experiences with psychedelics the serpents mainly serve to distract.
they are the most common to encounter as you approach the limits of this realm , and if it takes intimidation , deceit , persuasion or simply pretty colors , they will use that and try to keep you within those limits.

many experienced ayahuasqueros  and elvish spice travelers will agree with this ..
although debates still go on.

i've found it a better route to not allow the workings of the mind to elude me ..
thats why i take mushrooms.
its a no brainer .. :bigjoint:

The Ouroboros is an ancient powerful mystical symbol, among it's meanings are eternity, rebirth, transformation, immortality, evolution, etc...
My experience with it was absolutely terrifying. I was young, and had no idea whatsoever what I was dealing with.
It showed itself to me in this form after I requested it to, but I'm pretty sure it could have appeared as anything to me.

Hi Adamist!

So i'm restless tonight... Was going to do a trip report and started thinking of a very common aspect of my trips, mayan overtones and serpents/rebirth

So i did a search and low and behold found this thread...

So in many of my trips i have experienced serpents... I believe one of the first times was on mushrooms, field picked, 7+ grams dry probably... But there were over 15 large caps, and were all fresh and wet.

The trip never got insanely visual but it did almost take me out of body and was very uncomfortable... I remember being exhausted from no sleep, and laying down on the floor and closing my eyes. An extremely vivid vision came to me, it was a jungle snake coiled up... The vision before had been the most mind blowing fractal imagery writhing in and out of itself before it was a snake. I remember the snake immediately striking at my face, which startled me. After which, i began to feel all the secrets and knowledge of the universe opened up to me, and it was the feeling of 'God', what i can only describe as the feeling of everything at once, and being interconnected with the universe. It was very frightening and beautiful at the same time, and was like a rebirthing of sorts... I would come to experience this many times later.

The picture you provided depicts what is thought to be the Vision Serpent, which mayans would see upon blood letting rituals and i am sure mushroom ceremonies as well. They would go into trance like states and the serpents would appear and the gods would show them secrets and visions. An alternative theory is that the picture stands for rebirth, as snakes shedding their skins often symbolize just that, the god is shedding part of it's skin.

I didn't come to any of that knowledge till after i had done some digging in my mayan studies courses and further off into my own inquiries on the subject, which was also after i had taken the mushrooms. So i am sure this is what happened to me.

There are 2 serpents - one good and one evil. Like when Moses went to the Pharaoh and threw down his rod, which turned into a Serpent. Then the Pharaoh's "magicians" threw down their rod which also turned into a serpent. Then the Serpent of Moses swallowed the serpent of Pharaoh.

This is a picture of "Quetzalcoatl" the ancient Toltec/Nahua "Feathered Serpent" God. Teonanacoatl, the Nahua word for Psilocybin Mushrooms, which means "God's Flesh" was another one of their Gods. (I was noticing how the Serpent's headdress looks like the bottom of a mushroom cap.)

Oh, the wonder of joy!
I am the food of life,
and I am he who eats the food of life:
I am the two in One.
I am the first-born of the world of truth,
born before the gods,
born in the center of immortality.
Those who give me are my salvation.
I am that Food
which eats the eater of Food.

--Taittiriya Upanishad (circa 500 B.C.)

For the first part of what you said, that is a different part of the world, and a different lore.

The second part, "quetzalcoatl" is the feathered serpent, which differs from the vision serpent.

Before romanticizing the Mayans, I think it should be noted that they were an extremely brutal and bellicose people, and that while aspects of their cosmogony and cosmology are interesting, one shouldn't get the wrong idea about them.

That's all.

The Upanishads are from a "different part of the world" also. And the US is a different part of the world from Mesoamerica, nevertheless, the OP had a vision in the US that was similar to those of Mesoamerican people from possibly 2600 B.C.

BTW, I believe and understand that "blood-letting" is a wrong direction and is not coming from a good place.
