A comet with an atmosphere the size of Jupiter comes close to Earth

This glimmering apparition is Comet McNaught, which is visiting the inner solar system and may become visible with the naked eye by the end of the month. This is the first visit to the solar system by the million-kilometer comet.

Comet photographer Michael Jaeger snapped two amazing images of Comet McNaught the other day, as it makes its approach to our neighborhood. Check out the thin blue gas tail. Here's another look:

You know what always blows my minds about comets?  Their tails always point away from the sun, reguardless of which direction they're traveling due to solar wind.

It kind of feels weird because it doesn't act the same down here with an atmosphere.

There is no air in space. No air to offer resistance and dirrect the tail of a comet. Solar wind just acts as a guide for the tail. It's like blowing out a candle the flame will lean away from the dirrection of air (solar wind in comets case).

Hard to look at something like this and think it's not the most amazing thing you've ever seen.

This comet's been flying through the fucking sky, stopping by to say hello to our meager existence, and will make rounds around the Universe for millions of years.

Impossible to accept and impossible to comprehend.

Comets tend to be giant lumps of iron or other mixtures of transition metals. Because the ore that the comet is largely made out of Para/Ferromagnetic compounds it will either be attracted or repulsed by the magnetic field generated by the large plasma goop that the sun is made out of.

As the velocity (and therefore direction) of particles in a magnetic field always act perpendicularly to the field (F=q.(vxB)) the resultant motion of the atoms must therefore be perpendicular to the magnetic field. As the sun is a sperical object, and there is supersposition of fields, the field more than likely acts in concentric cirlces around the sun, and hence why the tail (which largely consists of metal ions) acts perpendicularly.

I just thought this up on the spot (and I'm stoned as fuck), feel free to pull it apart.

This comet passed by in early 2007, and they said it will never come back to the inner solar system again, something is wrong with this article.

You guys remember when Hale-Bopp came through in 97. That was the coolest shit ever. We would hit a back road to smoke a J and just sit and look at the thing while we burned down. I hope that we get to see this one with the naked eye.

Water is paramagnetic due to the lone pairs on the oxygen (hence why you can bend it with a magnet). According to wikipedia the composition is mainly ice, dust and rocky particles. If we assume the rocky particles are composed of metal ore (like a good portion of rocks are).. then my argument holds valid.
