damnit. i believe i've been using far too little gypsum in my bulk mixes, been going by weight rather than volume

the mix i'm using has been:
100g coir (dry)
50g  horse manure (dry)
15g  gypsum

comfimation of my idiocy anyone?
i may need to edit a post in the 'UK mush supplies' thread.

I use pete/verm mix. also add hydrated lime...and as soon as I receive my 40lb bag of gypsum, I'm going to add 1 part to 10 of peat (10%)

10% gypsum by volume works. I don't know if you need that much though.

By the way, any and all human activity produces carbon. You could be sleeping naked woods and still be producing carbon. Humans produce carbon when they exhale. If you are that worried about carbon, quit exhaling, because you're polluting. We are made of carbon, by the way.

Excess anything is bad. I didn't see the word "excess" used at all until your last post.

Balance is my word. I love what that word means to me. Unfortunately, it is hard to come by, things being how they are.

I apologize to the OP for being off topic. Anyone wanting to continue can PM me.

Fuck the PM, let's continue this in the parking lot wise guy. I'll give you some carbon! It's right in between my knuckles, and you can't chew it, so I'm gonna have to do something about your teeth. :kaboom:

Get the hint?

hydrated lime is an additive for the casing mix ,to reduce acidity, not for the bulk substrate.

still looking for "comformation of my idiocy"(apart from the corrected spelling error ). anyone?

Confirmation of what?  The amount of gypsum?  If you're using ten percent gypsum by weight, that's plenty.  I've been experimenting with using less gypsum on my shiitake blocks, and so far I haven't seen any reduction in performance until I get less than 5% by volume, which is around 2 1/2% by weight.  Bear in mind that's using hardwoods, which may be somewhat higher in minerals than what you're using for substrate.

Gypsum supplies calcium and sulfur, both of which are essential for good fruitbody formation.  Using too much doesn't really hurt, it just doesn't help to use more than is needed by the mycelium.  However, if your substrate is lacking these minerals, failure to use enough gypsum will impact yields substantially.

a little over 10 percent. i'll drop the gypsum ratio down a bit.
thanks.
