S.A.D.
    #12647290 -

I have seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D.) I go into serious depression in winter. It's autumn right now here and I've already been feeling myself go downhill. In mid winter I usually get very depressed and often suicidal. I hate knowing that this is going to happen and I can do nothing about it. I've tried anti depressants, light therapy, exercise, everything but it's not helping.

I become a bit of a hermit in winter and I think thats half my problem. If I go outside or even feel the cold I just feel empty. But I'm a very outdoors orientated person in the summer, i like to garden, bushwalk, go to the beach etc but in winter I just can't seem to face it so I stay indoors. But being indoors all the time makes me antisocial and even more depressed.

Im scared for this winter. And for anyone who doesnt understand s.a.d. or thinks its a load of bullshit, I assure you its very real to me.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what some good indoor winter activities are to do with friends? My friends get bored coming over for movie nights all the time... so they stop coming over in winer. Or maybe things to keep my busy when I can't see my friends? I go to college 4 times a week... but then there are 3 days left for me to do absolutely nothing.

Plus anyone else here have s.a.d?

Get a gym membership, try indoor rock climbing, and take a vacation at some point.

I asked a friend this. His response was, "Stop being a fuckin' hermit, simple. It's vitamin d production, the light therapy has good cause behind it."

your problem isn't going to disappear without you taking some risks.

true..  but a move is a big thing... and to get out of the cold I will have to move far up north. Maybe sometime in the future when I can afford it.

Try a vitamin D supplement (lack of sunlight over time can cause severe vitamin D deficiency which can contribute to seasonal depression)

and if you can, find a hot yoga studio.  That's how I stayed sane in wintertime.

so you live in the southern hemisphere.

your a fucking pussy for not going out side because unless you live on a small island near the antarctic winters wont be severe enough for you not to go out side and bushwalk n such. As a south african i dont find the winters to even be that bad. It is just jeans and long selves shirt weather.

Everything's connected.
There is something connecting your seasonal depression that you could positively fix.

Make plans. For me, having something to look forward to makes the difference between being contented and deep depression.

That's all easy to say, but it's really hard for some people to understand. And I don't have a mum so don't start blaming her.

The way I'm feeling is because of me, and I know it's all in my head but it feels so real to me. I just need to find ways to distract myself from the winter because it really gets to me.

I also have S.A.D. and lightbox therapy cured me of it.  I just use my lightbox for about two hours per day during the late fall/winter months.

I bought one from here and my health insurance covered it.
