Simple electrolysis, hydrogen fuel from water

Electrolysis
I just used the springs from some dead lighters, an old 9v powerpack, and some copper speaker wire.

I mixed in about 2 table spoons of Sodium Bicarbonate (aka baking soda)
Into about 300ml water.





It turns the copper wire green and black.

Now what would be the best way to seperate the gasses?

If you light the bubbles, it sounds like a fire cracker ^.^

I wonder why we don't have hydrogen/electric cars? :frown:

Platinum is a key component to the hydrogen fuel cell stack, and there's not enough of it in the entire world to replace all of the cars currently in use, much less the ones that will be in use in the future. Until the technology changes they hydrogen car is a no go.:nonono:

There is certainly enough platinum to be used in catalytic converters that are on almost all of the cars in the US and other countries.

How much is needed for a hydrogen powered vehicle?

I don't remember exactly. I read a book on it several years ago and I think it was like an ounce and a half. It's been a while though so I could be way off.

I don't see why its necessary, other than longevity. This guys is using stainless steel. Its not that hard to make the gas, and we already had electric cars.

Would the Pt electrodes need to be replaced eventually? I have. Seen a small gas powered generator running off of HHO, is there really a need to seperate the hydrogen? Seperating it would give you pure H2 and I suppose you could mix your own air fuel ratio.

What modifications would need to be made to an engine (with a carbourator) to run off of H2?

Is HHO definatly not gonna work for large engines?

Can we use Pt on the annode and another cheaper metal cathode?

And the ammount of Pt on a catalytic converter is miniscule its a super thin electroplate

Electrolysis of water creating hydrogen and oxygen is dumb because it takes energy to separate them. You're using a battery to break the bonds and then using that gas to power something. It's more efficient to just use the damn battery.

If they engineer some synthetic microbes that digests water, expels hydrogen, and gets its energy from the sun THEN we're in business.

I don't know all that much about it, but I don't think hydrogen cars run on water. I think they produce water as a byproduct.

Correct. But the way we get the hydrogen is by other means than electrolysis.

I'm pretty sure the gasses produced through electrolysis cant produce as much energy as was put into the separation. 

Kind of like spending 5 dollars on 4 dollars.

That's the main reason they don't have hydrogen power plants, and cars and what not.  Well, I mean they do have them but they're not popular cause a way to get pure hydrogen without spending more energy than is produced by burning the hydrogen has yet to be discovered.

They can use hydrogen gas cylinders, get hydrogen by electrolysis, or they have these pelets that absorb lots of hydrogen.  When hydrogwen is burned with oxygen water is emmited as its exhaust.

I have seen generators run off of HHO.  They have forklifts that run on propane.  If it burns you can run a car on it. Deisel cars can be run on used fryer oil, with no modifications to the engine.

The problem with car engines now is the fule system not having proper compression to run on gasses and the exhaust will need to be steel.

I should just get a deisel car like an oldschool VW jetta. Or a mercedes Kompressor

The alternators recharge the batteries that make the HHO I've seen some pretty viggorous electrolysis. The OP used just some wire.

If you use larger wires to allow for more amps and use a screen that goes around the inside. (Possibly plated in Pt) ans another screen foing around the inside of that with like 2 mm of speration. Hook that up to your nice 200a car battery and you'll get some serious gas production!

Its not impossible at all it works and has been done befor. But they are keeping these advancements from us. Big Oil will be broke without us

Titanium works just as well as platinum. The biggest problem is that its hard to store, so it need to be converted then used. I don't think its that big of deal. If you were powering a LHV (Light Hydrogen Vehicle) Maybe implemented with solar powers and good batteries, the gas could be created and used when you need extra power.

You can store it in hydride, yet the government doesn't permit sell of it.

Problem is, you used more energy than you get from the H2 + O2 even in a super efficient fuel cell.

Oh btw, the mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gas is obscenely explosive, even small quantities can mess up your hearing.
