"And today? Sheikh Mohammed turned Dubai into Creditopolis, a city built entirely on debt. Dubai owes 107 percent of its entire GDP. It would be bust already, if the neighbouring oil-soaked state of Abu Dhabi hadn't pulled out its chequebook. Mohammed says this will constrict freedom even further. "Now Abu Dhabi calls the tunes – and they are much more conservative and restrictive than even Dubai. Freedom here will diminish every day." Already, new media laws have been drafted forbidding the press to report on anything that could "damage" Dubai or "its economy". Is this why the newspapers are giving away glossy supplements talking about "encouraging economic indicators"?"

Under number 5... as for the companies, they said that they have to rent these spaces, I came to the conclusion if they are not making the revenue they want to then the companies are suffering more then Dubai I'm sure

Same thing happened to me when I played Neil Armstrong in Moonshot. They found me in an alley in Burbank trying to re-enter the earth's atmosphere in an old refrigerator box.

19. Speeding is an Emirati sport and Emirates Road is just an extension of the Dubai Autodrome.  I know I keep mentioning the roads, but really, much of this city’s issues are encompassed by the erratic and irrational behavior displayed on its streets.  Visions of flashing lights on even flashier, limo-tinted SUVs haunt me as I merge on to the highway.  Local nationals are somehow able to get the sun-protecting dark window tint denied to us lowly expats and use it to hide their faces as they tailgate you incessantly at unbelievably high speeds, their lights flickering on and off and horn blaring repeatedly.  It doesn’t matter that you can’t get over, or if doing so would be particularly dangerous, they will run you off the road to get in front of you.  Don’t even think about giving someone the finger; the offense could land you in jail.  Tailgating is, unbelievably, legal.

:rofl2:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Arab_Emirates Sorry I was wrong.. but  Dubai still didn't have to bail themselves out... they weren't destroyed because of this. Another state swooped and saved the day....

What I think is ironic is that debt is illegal but its a society based upon it.  Do you think the oil sheikes when to jail when put the entire city into massive debt... no!

Dubai is the muslim world showing the rest of us that they can be pretty too.  As long as there are oil states ran by islamic governments, expect their 'figurehead of the muslim world' to be propped up by foreign profits.
