He demands performance that exceeds what would happen by random chance alone. What's unattainable about that?

You do understand, don't you, that it's a test to see if you have PSI not a test to see if you can score a few lucky guesses, right?

Did you even read my post?  A p-value of 0.05 is usually considered significant.  So if you carry out over 30 trials, and you have a success rate of 60% at p of 0.05, then it is statistically significant.

A p-value of 0.001, or even 0.0001 would be completely adequate given enough trials.

Yes, the claimant makes the procedure, but Randi gets to choose which level he deems as statistically significant.

Exactly.

And the fact that there is no discernible long-term skew in casino losses (or other systems of chance like insurance, investing, and such) is pretty good evidence that no one with PSI is secretly using their powers and getting rich.

Casinos year after year after year make EXACTLY the amount of money predicted by statistical theory. Same for insurance companies and even investment banks, the current slew of moronity among their ranks notwithstanding.

Casinos also break your face if you start winning too much.

I've got a great experiment for emotional connection at a distance:

Two people (who feel they have a telepathic connection) are in CT scans, one is shown a emotional picture.  Measure the brain activity in certain areas associated with each emotion.  If the person not being shown the picture has brain activity in the same location as the one being shown the picture then there is an emotional connection.  It is impossible to measure empathy or emotionally connection empirically, but I think this experiment might be interesting.

Show me where the JREF has made an unreasonable requirement re statistical significance. Hint: they have a forum where test protocols are negotiated in full public view. Should be easy to find evidence of this if it's true.

BZZZT! Not so for insurance companies and brokerage firms. Try again.

And let's not forget that telekinesis has to be demonstrated only once to win the prize.

Since your whole point here revolves around the p-value, let me ask you...  What p-value do people with 'PSI' get?  Are you claiming it is around .05?

(Note, if you dont have any data on what p-value these 'PSI' people can generate, which I dont think you do, then your whole argument is moot anyway.)

AN  ASSESSMENT OF THE  EVIDENCE FOR PSYCHIC FUNCTIONING

Professor Jessica Utts
Division of Statistics
University of California, Davis
Quote:
In publishing the ganzfeld results from PRL, Bem and Honorton (1994) excluded one of the studies from the general analysis for methodological reasons, and found that the remaining studies showed 106 hits out of 329 sessions, for a hit rate of 32.2 percent when 25 percent was expected by chance. The corresponding p-value was .002. As mentioned earlier, the hallmark of science is replication. This result has now been replicated by three additional laboratories.

AN  ASSESSMENT OF THE  EVIDENCE FOR PSYCHIC FUNCTIONING

Quote:
It is recommended that future experiments focus on understanding how this phenomenon works, and on how to make it as useful as possible. There is little benefit to continuing experiments designed to offer proof, since there is little more to be offered to anyone who does not accept the current collection of data.

That's hillarious that you would use Jessica Utts quackery to support your claim given that she's been thoroughly debunked by psychologist and mathematician Ray Hyman here:

http://www.mceagle.com/remote-viewing/refs/science/air/hyman.html

Plus I'm still waiting for a link to the JREF's unreasonable requirements. Hint (again): all their protocol negotiations are done in public on their online forum.

Debunked?

He doesn't say it impossible, hes saying her evidence is shaky.  But he does admit it deserves more investigation.

Quote:
I have played the devil's advocate in this report. I have argued that the case for the existence of anomalous cognition is still shaky, at best. On the other hand, I want to state that I believe that the SAIC experiments as well as the contemporary ganzfeld experiments display methodological and statistical sophistication well above previous parapsychological research. Despite better controls and careful use of statistical inference, the investigators seem to be getting significant results that do not appear to derive from the more obvious flaws of previous research. I have argued that this does not justify concluding that anomalous cognition has been demonstrated. However, it does suggest that it might be worthwhile to allocate some resources toward seeing whether these findings can be independently replicated. If so, then it will be time to reassess if it is worth pursuing the task of determining if these effects do indeed reflect the operation of anomalous cognition. This latter quest will involve finding lawful relationships between attributes of this hypothesized phenomenon and different independent variables. Both the scientific and operational value of such an alleged phenomenon will depend upon how well the conditions for its occurrence can be specified and how well its functioning can be brought under control.

There is evidence to support further investigation, but nobody is going to grants for it.

And for the statistic thing, Randi responded to the post I linked and lowered it to 1/100 000.

Quote:
However, I am glad to see that my article has prompted Randi to lower the odds (to 1 in 100 for the preliminary, and 1 in 100,000 for the main challenge). This may make the Challenge a more attractive proposition for parapsychology researchers. It certainly remedies (to a degree) one of the main problems with the challenge - that the odds are so long. One in one hundred thousand is still no easy task however.

Two people (who feel they have a telepathic connection) are in CT scans

I'm not even gonna address this except to point out that this study had a sample size of ONE. That alone renders it meaningless. But you can add to that the weak isolation protocols that were used, the fact that the subjects knew each other well and had a history of many years "performing" together, and perhaps most significantly, the experimenters neglected to have an experienced stage magician supervising to ensure there was no trickery.

There is a long and storied history of scientists who thought they could never be fooled in fact being fooled by hucksters during experiments.

And for the statistic thing, Randi responded to the post I linked

That link is hearsay. Post a link to the JREF forum where the actual protocol negotiation took place, not some guys web site where we're reading his comments instead of the ACTUAL protocol back and forth that took place.

and lowered it to 1/100 000

And you find this unreasonable? Like I already said, the JREF is looking for genuine PSI, not lucky guesses. I think you're misunderstanding what the term Statistical Significance means.

I'm no statistician and it was a long time ago when I studied this in school, but as I recall, at P = 0.01, you can run 100 pharmaceutical studies of PURE PLACEBOS and you will find on average one of those studies demonstrating statistically significant efficacy for a placebo.

It's good enough for a pharmaceutical study because at P = 0.01 there is a very low probability for a false positive in the context of a drug trial. If you run 100 drug trials and one of them gives you a false placebo-positive, the overall results taking all 100 trials into account, are still rock solid. But in the context of the thousands of JREF applicants, it's a hopelessly weak standard.

JREF has tested thousands of people over the years. At P = 0.01 they would have had a LUCKY winner (who won by chance not by genuine PSI) every hundred claimants on average.

At P = 0.00001 the standard is fair, even overly-fair, because assuming the null hypothesis is true (read: PSI actually does not exist) then on average the 100,000th applicant will win the prize on pure chance alone.

It's Randi's contest so Randi gets to do what he wants.
I agree that p < .00001 is reasonable IF the parapsychology literature isn't bullshit.
They claim to get down in the p < .01 levels easily in random trials.
They also claim that certain individuals score significantly better than the average.

It should be relatively easy to take that one individual and run them through tests over and over again until you hit p < .00001 levels, if something as significant as they describe is actually happening. I know I've read refutes of fatigue -- spread it over a course of days? The number of trials shouldn't be effected by time in between, as long as the amount of trials required for significance is reached, Randi would have to own up.
