some people go out of their way to text as a way of avoiding speaking directly to someone

You say that like it's a bad thing. Sending somebody a short well composed message that they can respond to at their leisure is an art form. Phone conversations tend to be pathetic banal rambling affairs often without a point.

In the 17th and 18th century the upper middle class were constantly sending out servants with short notes. In the 19th century many cities had systems of pneumatic tubes with messages whizzing about. The telephone both democratized and demystified communication and in the process took away some of the elegance and style of the written word.

Never in the history of humanity have so many people been so literate. For every teen texting: "LOL U TK HM 2DA BAR?" there are three people writing single use poetry.

Your humble servant,
Koppie

people who try to hold conversations through text messaging epitomize everything that's wrong with the world

i realize this is hyperbole... but i'm just wondering what your justification for even the basest form of this statement is.

even if they don't literally "epitomize" the world's problem, clearly you think this is somehow actually a world problem.  how is that exactly?  please elaborate.

The content of a message is inextricably linked with the medium in which it is communicated.  Texting simplifies vocabulary; also,  because of the relatively long time to input a message and the limit on the length of the message, it is ensured that nothing of actual importance will be ever be discussed through texting.  People are becoming ever more absorbed in discussing trivialities with people in an impersonal way...

Girls like to text as well, it's like cleaning and doing laundry to them. Would you really take away their laundry doing privileges? You can sext them as well, I find if I don't want to talk to some one I just ignore the text.

I text a lot, since I have a droid with a flip out qwerty keyboard. It's convenient. Calling your friend at 2am about an idea is creepy. With texting, it's not as bad.

Texting is good for quick communication.

Hating the technology is like hating psychedelics because there are a lot of nutjob hippies.

Not everybody tweets and gives a shit like that.

"I'm going to make fun of technology on an internet forum."

Not taking advantage of convenient technology doesn't make anyone any better or less of a person.

What if you're headed somewhere, only to realize halfway that you forgot to call someone and let them know an important detail? What if you break down in the middle of nowhere?

I think cell phones are pretty convenient, kind of like the internet. Texting isn't much different than communicating through a forum.

Unlimited text is like $5 a month.

I hate chain letters. An acquaintance of mine has my number on her cell phone, and I get annoying chain mail from her all the time.

I almost want to reply and ask her to take my name out of her phone so when she mass texts people I don't receive it.

You also bring up a good point about cost, I have a good service plan that includes unlimited texting. If I didn't have this, I would text a lot less. I don't text all day long or anything, but they still add up, especially if you do occasional rants to friends lol.

I hate to say it, but I really do like my phone. I browse shroomery on it all the time. Link if you aren't familiar with the droid phones. The operating system on it fucking pwns.

I was referring to actual conversation, not just relaying information to someone (text is superior in this regard).

A phone conversation will convey much more than a text conversation, not just by the amount of conversed content but on an emotional level.

If someone paid my monthly fee for an Android or similar phone, then I'd carry it.  Mostly because of the fun apps, not because of texting and phone though.  But right now I'm not willing to pay that much money, and talking on the phone and texting just doesn't appeal to me.

Go ahead and call me a Luddite, I don't really care.

Especially because I run networks and servers all day long for money.

Text messaging is a handy tool. I used it at my old work to send details of appointments to customers and it has other uses. My mate's server is setup to send him a text message if someone attempts to hack into it.

The manners that people have when using this technology, however, can be irritating. Like those who text at the dinner table and those who answer their phones during the movies. This point I can understand.

This.

It has its place.

Douchebags that spend all day texting away piss me off too though.

But I use it often because a lot of times its easier than calling someone, and I hate talking on the phone.
