UFC 112: Penn vs Edgar

I've been talking with friends and online MMA fans for the past couple of weeks, and after a decent amount of consideration I just can't see Penn losing this fight in any way. Is there someone on the shroomery that thinks Frankie Edgar has a chance at some point in this fight? or is this just another UFC squash match until the real title contender(Gray Maynard) gets a shot?

it's the hardest matchup for Penn since GSP.


Edgar is legit, a more legit challenger than Sanchez, Sherk, or even Florian.

I can't see how Edgar will be a more legitimate challenge than Diego(Diego would murder Edgar), and we all saw what Penn did to him. Granted, Diego doesn't have the wrestling that Frankie has, but do you honestly think that his wrestling exceeds BJ's takedown defense and overall ground game? I do not. Frankie will be completely dominated on the feet, and  if he manages to wrestle BJ to the ground, he's at a disadvantage even on top. A much better situation than standing with BJ yes... but I just don't see Edgar being able to do anything significant sitting in BJ's guard. If he tries to pass, he will be switched and dominated, probably via RNC eventually.

first of all, Diego would NOT murder Edgar.  That's something I'll never agree with.


Edgar's got superior wrestling, but the best thing about him is he's tough, offensive, and well rounded moreso than Diego.



Sanchez always had holes in his standup (i.e. outboxed by Koscheck), and wrestling.




Edgar has beaten alot of top guys, and he's the only one who holds a real legit win over Tyson Griffin.




I always said Tyson Griffin was legit long before any of you MMA noobs saw him come into the UFC.  And for Edgar to beat a fighter like him speaks magnitudes.


Edgar is a far better fighter than Sanchez.  But Diego has the hype of all the TUF MMA noobs who saw him on that stupid reality show.

There's very few people who have a more offensive and aggressive style than Sanchez, Edgar is definitely not one of them. If his wrestling was so superior, Edgar wouldn't have been completely dominated and controlled by Gray Maynard in a very one-sided fight.

Your assumptions about me are quite comical and seem to be common at the shroomery. I've known about Griffin for a long time now, ever since he knocked out Urijah Faber many years ago. Nothing you have said comes close to backing up your claim that Edgar has a chance against Penn a week from now. He's well rounded? I think not. Being 'well-rounded' is far from being an automatic legit contender anyways.  You can claim that all you want, I won't have to refute that(Penn will simply prove it by totally destroying Edgar on the feet). Yes, his wrestling is good, but it's not even the best in the lightweight division (or even close). If you honestly think that alone and his 'toughess' you speak about are going to even get him a whiff of a victory, you're either an Edgar nut hugger or an MMANOOBLOL yourself.

I have no problem with your opinions of Frankie Edgar being a legit title challenger, but your ignorance in calling pretty much everyone else an 'MMA or TUF noob' just makes you look like an idiot.

Oh please, Sanchez hasn't fought anyone good since John Fitch


Edgar doesnt have the best wrestling in the division but its close.


If you look at his record, Edgar's had a far more impressive series of wins over tough lightweight fighters than Sanchez.


And that fight against Maynard was his only loss.



Sanchez hasn't looked good at all at lightweight, and he never deserved the title shot.


Just because MMA noobs like you buy into the hype you see on Pay Per View commercials doesn't mean Sanchez was in line for a title shot.


He struggled against Stephenson and Guida, while guys like Frankie Edgar, Tyson Griffin, and yes even Zoolander have been taking down legit contender in the division for years.



Go back put on your Affliction shirt and drinking your Xyience and jerk off to Rachel Leah, you  TUF noob.

Edgar is a tough kid. I agree with smoke.

Biggest challenge for Penn in awhile.

Kid has great boxing. Biggest thing going against him is his lack of size.

Penn should win but he will have to work for it.

Edgar is legit as hell and would beat Diego's ass.



Edgar is a bigger threat to Penn than Diego because he has STANDUP.

diego has clay guida quality standup.



Edgar's got a better chance at BJ than anyone including Florian.

Maynard is 1 dimensional and if he fought BJ it would look like the Diego fight.


Edgar has options everywhere he goes and every move he makes is technical as fuck. His defensive wrestling is good, BJ will have trouble holding him down.

Its going to be a standup fight, penn has quick hands, edgar has excellent footwork and mobility. if edgar uses leg kicks well he may have a shot.


BJ is my favorite fighter, but Edgar is no joke at all. And he's my 2nd favorite fighter :wink:



POWER EDIT: Edgar is the only challenger BJ has fought that beat a former champion since Jens.

I'm sorry but beating up someone with t-rex arms in standup doesn't make you a serious threat to BJ Penn. If maynard is such a 1 dimensional fighter and Frankie is so well rounded, then Edgar should have no problem dispatching him using his 'superior wrestling' to keep the fight standing and then using his 'great standup' to finish the fight. Neither happened, and neither will happen against Penn. Like 75% of Edgar's fights in the UFC have gone to decision, how exactly does that translate into being able to finish a top 5 pound for pound fighter? You really think he's gonna win a decision against Penn?:shrug:

im just so sick of all the stupid TUF noob MMA fans who just started watching the sport in 2005 since the reality show and try to act like they're experts on the sport.



It's sort of looked down upon in mascular society to be ignorant of a sport, which is why everyone tries to front like they know what they're talking about when they have no clue.



For me it's like following a band before they were famous, and then watching them get big, and having to sift through a crowd of teeny-boppers and hipsters to get to see them again.
