School Decision. . .
    #12155724 -

Right now, I'm finishing up my G.E.D. Program, and I should be completely done in two weeks (I stopped school/dropped out early...)

Then I have to move onto my College Entrance Exams. (I've been told it's not really a big deal, you just have to study a little and you'll be able to pass it relatively easily) Once I am done with those, I can begin to do my pre-requisites that I'll need for the ability to transfer from my Community College to my local University.

I will need to have four maths. (I'm also going to take a Pre-Algebra class, to get my math chops back up, and to have an easier gradual ride into my Algebra 1 class, but that doesn't count for my math pre-requisites and it's also going to be with my first group of classes that I will need to take for my first semester to have Financial Aid)

So I have a few questions to anyone with school experience (I'm only 18, I'm going into all this for the first time)
I'm definitely going to be doing Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 (They are mandatory) I have no problems with that, I don't know algebra, but I can learn anything if I apply myself and I'm ready to really work toward a good degree. The other math class I am going to be taking is just General Math (I need one easy class, lol )

So, WTF should I take for my fourth? I have no idea...(keep in mind I'm not the best at math)

My other question(s) was, how realistic is it to take a class in the field of Mycology? (Whcih I'm not even sure my local Uni' would have, this is just hypothetical as I am not even close to going to Uni' for a while)

My plan is to get all of my Pre-Req's to know what I need to, to take a General Chemistry Class (Essentially I would think it is pretty much the same as what you would do in Chem' for High School, but a little bit more in depth and a little bit harder than High School level Chem, but essentially the same) and then go from there to take what I would need to go into a more specific field of Chemistry. (Un-Decided, ATM, but I have time to decide, I won't being doing the heart of my Academic Career anytime soon, I have to finish what I'm doing now first)

So help me answer these questions if you can...thanks. The plan was/is to do what I need to work toward Gen Chem and go onto more Chem from there.

But what about Mycology, is it a realistic field of science to pursue?

if you REALLY wanted to be a "mycologist", and play with fungi for a living this is what you'd have to do...

get a degree in biology or environmental science or something, then impress someone already STUDYING mycology and get a PhD with them.  or, just get a PhD in something else, then eventually get a research grant to play mycology urself.  u couldn't just bowl right into it.

if u have a LOT of enthusiasm, can get along with professors really well (ur the kid that is always asking questions and going to office hours and basically annoying the professor until they hook u up) then go for it.  if u dun mind working for it, u could do it.

otherwise study something that you can get a job easily doing.  talk to kids in the department that know about getting co-ops or something.  i dunno about where you live, but in ny, there are a million and a half fucking entry level jobs for computer programmers.

also, for the record, and because i'm flying, college professors probably wouldn't care if u bugged the shit outta them while u were high.  a lot of college professors smoke weed anyway.  if u like smoking, just smoke up and then go and learn.  u dun have to give it up, u just have to like...  time manage.

after algebra you should probably take geometry or maybe pre-calc? it depends on what courses are offered there and what your major is going to be. some majors require chemistry, but it's not one of your core classes, so the uni offers a lower series which covers the same principles but is less math intensive for them. you only need pre-calc to get into those classes here.

good luck and don't sweat it. i did terribly in my HS chem class and i was really anxious about taking my first college chem class. it turned out to be one of the easiest and most enjoyable classes i've ever taken though. you seem like you've got a good attitude about this, and that's what counts. go to class, do the HW, it'll be a breeze.

Elaborate on this a little, Environmental Science sounds okay, but as for biology I'd rather do the Environmetal Science...but as for the "Impressing someone already STUDYING mycology" do you mean like a Research Lab or somehting, and study under them with my degree as my qualification? Or would it be something at my school?

or, just get a PhD in something else, then eventually get a research grant to play mycology urself.  u couldn't just bowl right into it.

I didn't think so, I am now planning on getting into Chemistry and finishing my G.E.D. to then move onto my Pre-Req's...but I was just wondering about Mycology.

Well I don't mind applying myself and giving the majority of my life to my academics (which I plan to be 4-6 years, not 8)

otherwise study something that you can get a job easily doing.  talk to kids in the department that know about getting co-ops or something.  i dunno about where you live, but in ny, there are a million and a half fucking entry level jobs for computer programmers.

I want to work to a degree in a science, I could definitely go to my Community College and get a two year degree in something that i could get a job quickly in, and pursue mycology and chemistry on my own terms and on my own...amateur level of course, nothing real
but IDK, I wanted to really work at a good degree in something I could learn to love and dedicate my life to, and have a life long career in.

Yeah, I'm just finishing up my G.E.D. now so, I'm just thinking right now, really...thanks for the encouragement

You know, I could just as easily be happy getting a quick degree and getting into my career at an early age, buying myself a cheap mobile home and renovating it over the years, and just getting myself a life at an early age.
And just continue to pursue mycology at an amateur level as a hobby. and teach myself basic chem for fun.

All I need is enough to live comfortably and tp have my hobbies and I'll be happy forever...

and it might be better for me, too. (and easier on me) I would be just as happy... (I guess it's just a matter of deciding for sure)

Like I said, I'm just thinking now, anyway.

sun, i prolly overexplained.  sry.

environmental science is a good degree if u wouldn't mind working as an environmental remediation tech, or waste water tech after graduation.  it's a really interesting program, but the GOOD jobs are kind of rare.  biology is more of a laboratory tech kind of degree, doing research and stuff, or working for a hospital.

when i say you'd have to impress someone...  PhD programs are different than BS or MS programs.  u don't just apply, get financial aid, and get in.  it's like, a more personal relationship u have with ur head professor.  you go and interview with the guy, and if he doesn't like u then you aren't getting into the program.  further, typically the professor heading the program is already involved in some area of research, and basically u would just be doing work for him for awhile, then expounding on HIS/HER research with your own thesis.

community college to get the core courses out of the way is the right way to go.  yeh and sry, as for taking a mycology course to fulfill a science req., mycology courses do of course exist, but they might be higher level courses and not 'core' level.  chek it out tho, cuz really...  how the fuck would i kno anything abt ur skool.

neway...  g'luck.

Well Geometry really isn't hard at all. I'd take that before Algebra 1.

You should take Trig. Why is it that you don't want to? It's a pretty basic part of mathematics - if you decide to go into the sciences you'll be glad you did.

I because I heard it was pretty hard, and if it isn't mandatory I'm not gonna take it. A1-A2 will be hard enough for me as it is...
