ID request (not urgent) just found some shrooms in my neighbourhood
    #12130059 -

Habitat:
Woodchips, palm trees surrounding, dead and living wood also around.
Growing mostly on woodchips and the edge of the soil.

Stem:
Length around 3cm (I assume they are still growing), seem to be translucent.

Cap:
1cm or so, color black moving down to gray

Australia QLD area.

Curious as to what these may be, any ideas?

Thanks,

It's a Mycena species.

Thanks! I am assuming they do not contain psychedelic properties then?

Is there a reason you thought they may contain psychedelic properties?

Well I have been planning on going on my first hunt soon with a few people, as the weather here has been very good. How they were bunched, like 4-8 right next to each other looked like some pictures growing from a rice cake. The colour did seem very strange for a 'magic' mushroom but I am really new so I thought I mayaswell ask someone and stated it wasn't urgent.

No problem,

If you cut the stem off the cap then place the cap gills down on a piece of foil or a microscope slide then place a glass cup or bowl over it and leave it for an hour or so you'll find that your mushrooms produce a white spore print, this procedure should be done with all your mushroom finds and the colour of the spore deposit should be noted!
Species of Mycena produce a white spore deposit while the mushrooms you seek produce a purplish brown to violaceous brown deposit for Psilocybe species and a black deposit for Panaeolus species.

One of the reasons I love printing on slides or any glass is because you can always see the color of the print. If its a light color, lay the slide over a dark background and vice versa. Only problem with it, is that spores don't stick to it well and tend to rub completely off the slide if you wrap it in foil or place it in a plastic bag.

Absolutely, it is easy to see the colour of the spores on glass, to remedy your problem Blimey you could place the slide on a piece of clean foil and  then place the pileus half on the glass and half on the foil or if you have a few fruit bodies to work with you could make one on foil and one on glass!

Yes, like that!
Take note of how different the colour of the tape at the top of your piece of glass looks in the two photos, if your camera is capable you should start playing with the white balance settings!

Hey man if you're after psychedelic mushrooms up your way you should be checking out some cow paddocks. You should have a good chance of finding some Psilocybe cubensis or Panaeolus Cyanescens this time of year especially with all that rain you guys are getting.:shroomer:

you know i doubt my cheap digi has a white blance. i will check though.

it is pretty cool sandwiching prints inbetween glass. then if your like me you look at this shit while your sitting around smoking a joint. its not like looking at a print on tinfoil or paper.

It probably does if you take it off auto.

I always use the P mode.

You can white balance in post proccessing too if your camera won't do it.

ya it turns out you guys are absolutley correct.

now the settings it has are daylight, tungsten, flourescent and open shade.3 are self explanatory but what is tungsten used for?

now using this manually will make sure the colors are the same when i take a pic of something ? i took photography in highschool but those were old film cameras and ive never really familiarized my self with the manual functions on my digi.

Tungsten are your typical incandescnet lightbulbs.

Since everyone is talking about it, is there a benefit to doing it on the camera vs. post proccessing?  The reason I as is because it seems that even if I use the "correct" setting, I still need to tweak it a bit in post proccessing anyway.    So I just don't bother on the camera.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled mushroom identification:
