How has psychedelic use affected your peripheral vision?
    #12132005 -

I feel like my peripheral vision has increased due to psychedelic use; how about you guys? :crazy3:

holy shit, now that you mention it ...

i mean, i'm not gonna claim it's had a provable and significant effect, but more than once on mushrooms i've found myself taking exceptional notice of my peripheral vision, and i think that extra attention has to some degree spilled over into sober experience

obviously this is not likely to be a physiological effect, but psychologically i think we all get used to very one-pointed visual focus in everyday life (after all, it's not like we're usually out in the woods looking out for predators or anything) -- psilocybin (and presumably other psychedelics, though i can't speak from experience), having the effect that it does of helping people notice aspects of their perception which often go ignored, gives a break from that habitual one-pointed focus and opens up one's awareness to the broader scheme of sensory input ... including peripheral vision

On mushrooms, I've noticed, too, that my peripheral vision becomes greatly increased--when I get back to baseline, my peripheral vision is not as great as it was while tripping, but I kind of notice at least a slight increase compared to how it was before I tripped.

obviously this is not likely to be a physiological effect, but psychologically i think we all get used to very one-pointed visual focus in everyday life (after all, it's not like we're usually out in the woods looking out for predators or anything)

I think it has to do with the fact that there are tons of people around us almost everywhere we go; it may be at least partially fear based. Also, I think that compulsory education is at least somewhat responsible--children are crammed in crowded rooms and usually forced to face forward and focus on the teacher, and I believe this creates awkwardness because children are naturally inclined to socialize, especially when extremely close to each other, and since they are forbidden to socialize while the teacher is speaking, they are forced to "shut out" the perception of their surrounding peers in order to focus on the teacher. This behavior is drilled into them for 20 years or so, and once they're out of school, they're so used to being like that that they just continue staring straight forward, even when outside and away from any other people.

I've read that mushrooms increase visual acuity, but I'm not sure if that's true...

i haven't read the research myself, but i've heard of two studies which i trust actually exist and actually showed the results reported -- both studies give pretty clear evidence for psilocybin increasing visual acuity

the first was a test with two long lines on a screen, one vertical and one tilted
the tilted line is rotated slowly, and the subject presses a button when the lines appear to be parallel
subjects given psilocybin were able to estimate when the lines were parallel with greater accuracy than control subjects

in the second, subjects were shown sentences with some portion of the words covered -- by which i mean, the sentence was laid out in one line, and the bottom 25% or 50% or whatever percent of each letter was covered
subjects given psilocybin were able to correctly read the sentences with a greater portion of the text obscured than were control subjects

as for your comments on education, i couldn't agree more

So there seems to be pretty convincing evidence that mushrooms increase visual acuity--the only question I have now is, why? Would an individual who never participated in compulsory education experience an increase in visual acuity? What is the limit to how acute a human's vision can become? :strokebeard3:

this is more guesswork than not on my part, but i seem to recall hearing something about psychedelics to the effect that they inhibit the central nervous system's ability to screen out stimuli which would normally be judged irrelevant -- for example, the feeling of your sock against your heel
we've all tripped and at some point gotten caught up in the minutiae of some such experience, and this is a good subjective example of that selection inhibition effect
if one merely extrapolates that effect to the visual system, then there you have it, increased awareness of normally ignored peripheral data

damn good question
theoretically one could study this, but it would be an extremely difficult experiment to control properly, and i could imagine someone objecting to it on ethical grounds

Dont you think that the fact that mushrooms make your pupils opens up as wide as they can is something to take into account here?

unlikely

i don't know if i'm alone here in my knowledge of photography, but i'll give you what i consider to be an exact analogy:

the aperture of a camera -- the circular opening behind the lens -- can be widened or narrowed in accordance with light conditions, but no adjustment of the aperture has any effect on the fidelity of your negative
the film grain is what it is, and that's what determines the quality of your picture -- the only effect that aperture setting can have is to either over- or under-expose the film (or, of course, it can be set correctly)

in the same way, the resolution of your retinal cells is what it is, and the opening of the iris is merely a light level adjustment

or so i assume

ive never really noticed anything with my vision, but i definitely notice an increase in other senses, mainly hearing. it seems like i can hear something as if its right next to me, but really its 20 or 30 feet away. one instance is when me and my friend were tripping in the woods behind my house, he was maybe....30 feet away and he brushed up against the bark of a tree and it sounded like it was right next to me. i turned around and i thought hed be standing right there, but i looked and he was way behind....its pretty cool shit.

Relevant in relation to what? Wouldn't it benefit the human organism to be equally aware of all of its perceptions at all times?

Yeah, on cameras, it's the shape of the lens, not the size of the aperture, which determines the horizontal spectrum (I just made that term up, but I think you know what I mean); all dilated pupils do is make one more sensitive to light, and this may be at least somewhat responsible for the increase in acuity, but I don't think it has anything to do with the increase of the peripheral field.

it seems like i can hear something as if its right next to me, but really its 20 or 30 feet away.

I've experienced that, too.

A camera is not like an eye. Your pupils dialation is the reason you see such a high definition.

ideally, yes, but i should think it goes without saying that our brains have finite processing capacity

i think you'll agree that the combination of autonomic arousal and greater stimulus awareness (which psychedelics induce) takes a toll on your energy levels afterwards -- greater awareness comes at the cost of greater energy usage

Damn, you're right--if only we could install better processors in our brains...:malebrain:

You know  I'm not too sure about that--like I said earlier, every time I use mushrooms, I feel like my baseline peripheral vision gradually increases afterwords, and remains that way. I speculate that it may be possible to either gain a tolerance for greater energy usuage, or increase energy via the use of psychedelics...

if by "a tolerance for greater energy usage" you mean an increased brain metabolism, then i think your speculation is reasonable, but that increased energy usage is gonna have to be paid for in your calorie intake

i am assuming that greater sensory awareness is reflective of more mental processing, and that more mental processing requires more energy
therefore, referring back to the question of yours that i quoted, one has to assume that sustained increased awareness would by default be considered too costly by the body, and that's why in all but exceptional cases we're left with the average awareness of everyday life

Re: How has psychedelic use affected your peripheral vision? [Re: Poid]

I can rule out the dilation making your vision better. On psychs, my eyes don't dilate at all. I have been on 4g of cubes and couldn't even remember what my sober mind was like, yet my pupils were normal size.

I can say that mushrooms have increased my peripheral vision while sober a hell of a lot. I've never noticed much while tripping and if I did, I probably passed it off as visions. But when sober, I see the smallest things move from the corner of my eyes. It can become annoying though, if I see a street light in the distance, might think it's my phone going off or something but I'm gettin used to it.

Another vision related thing I'd like to add. Grain. At night, my vision is fairly grainy now and some things in the dark can't be seen straight on, but out of my peripherals, I can see it pretty well. This gets shit when I'm on a farm hunting and the suns gone down and I can't find my way out and fall into ditches and rivers and thangs :kingcrankey:
