God forbid that the rich are robbed from hoards of unemployed poeople!  But I predict it will happen if jobs do not become available.  I heard the "official" unemployment rate is around 10% and the "unofficial" unemployment rate is close to 20%.  Isn't that bad enough to rethink capitalism?  Or do we need to have 50% out of work?  At what point do we say that capitalism just doesn't work?

Nope, its entitlements.  But the military does come in second.

(Not sure how the recent 'one time' bailouts effect this)

Yea, but we do feed the poor who have not offended right?  There is free food for anybody in every major city.  Just look at the stats of the poor, they suffering from mass obesity not lack of food.  The few that are starving do so from mental illness and abuse, not lack of food and the 'system'.

Yes, and I'm simply defending the fact that we feed the poor, contra zappa's fuming rants against it.

Thanks for defending the poor.  After all, who would clean the rich people's houses, clean their pools, manicure their lawns and babysit their children?  They certainly can't seem to do it themselves.  :laugh2:

I'm not sure what events have happened in your life that have set you on this vendetta against the rich (which you seem to use in the place of "the financially comfortable").

People work hard, they earn money, and they can spend it as they please.  Just because you haven't bettered yourself enough to secure one of those high-paying jobs doesn't mean you should just spite everyone who happens to be in one.

Yeah, that last part sounded a bit elitist.  Whatever - get a job, you hippie (:ilold:)

I can respect someone whose fortune is a result of building businesses from the ground up and providing goods and services that people want.  I draw a strong distinction between that and casino games involving bundled mortgages and credit default swaps.

'meh.  I agree that one "feels" better than the other - but I acknowledge that both of them are simply the result of an individual exploiting supply and demand in the market to the best of their imagination & ability

Some people are just much better at it, use a different board and different pieces, and play with much higher stakes.

I have had those "high paying jobs".  I was a research scientist for 17 years.  One of them I quit becuse the stress was not woth the pay.  I actually had 3 co-workers who committed suicide in that job.  Then I quit a job with the government to move to Texas to get married, homestead, and live the simple life.

I was offered promotion and 60,000 a year to stay in my last "good job".  But I realized that there is more to life than making money.  I wanted to make a difference in the world and live closer to nature.

I believe that I have "bettered myself".  I don't "spite" someone in a "good job".  Want bothers me is corporate executives who have the power to make decisions that cause so many people to suffer.

My life so far is about money, sex, video games... in that order. Lol

I also have a wonderful gf who I share all of those things with.. except video games... she does not share the same interest as I do.

I'm fine with high-stakes games where only the gambler's fortune is at stake, such as in an actual casino.  But in Wall Street, high-stakes games can bring down the entire economy(see: 2008).  And in those cases, it's the ones making those risks that are least likely to feel the repercussions.

There seems to me to be a fairly obvious difference between the kind of work and investment that creates wealth versus the kind that exploits wealth.

I suppose.  But I don't think anyone who created any of the financial insturments that went awry in 2007 had any idea that their creations would cause such a mess.

I thought military spending makes up the bulk of the government expenses.  And I never heard of someone "turning down" social security, are you going to turn it down?  I stand by my original statement that welfare (aid to families with dependent children) and food stamps are a very small percentage of the federal budget.

You thought wrong.  By a lot.  You never heard of anyone turning down Soc Sec?  Did you know federal employees can opt out.  I'm 53 years old.  I'm so against it that I will be willing to tell them to stuff all the money they've already stolen from , cram it up their ass and give me zero benefits ever if they will stop taking any more.  I've made posts in the Shroomery saying just that for at least the last 5 years.

Yes, welfare and food stamps are a small part.  And I actually think we should help the truly unfortunate and indigent.  It's all the other entitlement shit, and that includes building a bike path in Osh Kosh, that is social programming and expanding the definition of a child eligible for S-Chip to the age of 28.  As is grossly over-hiring and over-paying bureaucrats.  Who, has you may have noticed, are taking ZERO hits in this recession.  ZERO.  Bought and paid for by Obama and Dem Inc.

Now you just lie.  I have repeatedly stated that we should help the truly unfortunate.  Repeatedly.  Which has not one thing to do with what is going on now.  Why are 28 year olds considered children for the purposes of S-CHIP?  A D&D infatuation is not a bona fide disability.  Why is the federal bureaucracy involved at all in local matters?  Building bike paths, turtle tunnels and subways?  Why, indeed, is welfare a federal issue at all.  There are other levels of government much closer to the local  needs and the people.  Let states do it.  After all, they know far better what they need specific to them than some DC wanker trying to craft a one size fits all garment that ends up looking like a fat suit and fits no one.

Oh no?  Why do you think they tried to get rid of them?  Then again, I can't blame them since the government forced them to make the bad loans in the first place.

Actually I do believe this is very possible, and likely will happen in time, using our current system.  I work for Wal-Mart, and we don't even receive checks anymore for pay.  You have to have direct deposit, and if you don't have a bank account, you've got to get a Walmart card and use it.  Actually I'm pretty sure that today only about 3% of money exists in physical currency.  The rest is digital.  So I'd say we're already moving into a similar system.

What  you're talking about is a society void of physical currency - not a moneyless society.

Society void of physical currency:  possible (maybe, relative to...
Society void of money (as in, a unit of exchange)

No, I was commenting on the person I quoted's post.  It was a tangent; had little to do with the subject of the thread.  That's why I quoted him.
If you want to be on even footing here, look at the material yourself rather than trying to attack me personally, cause you're doing a piss poor job at that.

The economy will crash long before we reach 50% unemployment.  If it really is at 20% right now, we don't have long at all before we're going to be forced to take a different direction.  The sad thing is that most are going to wind up trying to "reform" the monetary system, with another gold standard or a no-debt type system.  If that happens, sooner or later we'll end up in the same spot because nothing in life can constantly expand.  There is no equation for such a system.  There must be contraction, so a no-debt system cannot work.  And even if it could, the incentive would always be to hoard, which doesn't solve any social problems whatever.

The community reinvestment act had absolutely nothing to do with the banks making bad loans. That's just a pathetic talking point for people who have no financial literacy.

Securitization, (or basically taking a bunch of bad loans, pooling them together and calling it a AAA rated security) is the only thing that made it possible for the banks to make so many bad loans. It's okay to blame the (private sector) banks here.
