Any of you use Google Sketchup?
    #11872280 -

I'd seen people using it in the past and I always thought it looked like a cool tool.  So when I decided to plan a chicken coop, I decided it was a good time to use it as a tutorial.

Do you guys have any cool examples?  I know mine is pretty basic, but hey, I'm learning

hmm, thats pretty cool. Wonder if you can use it to design a skate ramp. I am planning on startting one up soon. Might have to look into that.

I'm sure you could.  My brother in law did a very detailed house design for a presentation in architecture class.  His wasn't something you could build blueprints off of, but it conveys the general idea very well.

On mine I went a bit anal just so I could learn.  The thickness of the plywood is to scale (15/32 of an inch  ), and each 2x4 is an actual seperate entity so I could measure it.

thats cool. DO you know if you can use a radius in the program? I will look more into this evening but that is the only thing that would hold me back from being able to design a ramp.

I'm not sure what you mean by a radius?  If you mean just a distance across a circle, then yeah.  You would just basically create a circle and drag it out to the exact measurements you want.  Then cut the top half off for a half-pipe

There are tons of tutorials on youtube and online as well as some books at your library if it's of a decent size.

i used to tear autocad up in highschool.

everyone else in the class is doing blocks. i did a 3-view image of the Starship Enterprise to scale. yeah.. im a geek..

Autocad and Sketchup are similar, but Sketchup is typically used more for visualizations more than techical drawings.  Autocad is a solid modeler (everything has 3 dimentions and a volume) whereas Sketchup is a surface modeler.  Most sketchup drawings are of the outside-skin of things.  For example a wall in a house might only length and height, because it was only meant to be viewd from the outside, so seeing the back doesn't really matter.

Crappy explanation, but maybe it makes some sense

oh i was hoping to be able to get all the demensions for the materials i need to cut and everything out of that. I guess it would still be nice to have a good visual of what i will be building.

Well you can, and that's what I did with my chicken coop.  It's a good alternative to autocad because it's free and quicker to learn.  But if you wanted to get really technical, Autocad would be the way to go.
