the next paradigm of gaming
    #11758959 -

is MMOFPS. Massive Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter.

due to grinding, MMORPG's as a stand-alone concept are starting to wane. Now we see games like MAG, and the popularity of Modern Warfare being the driving force in graphics, interplay and overcoming latency.

I have had an idea for years about the time when a game so massive would come along that would try to simulate true world war.... where you create a character that fights in a real sized world with real time movements and such...

imagine this.... you start the game and create a character that is medic, infantry, pilot etc. and you can actually die, which means you have to start all over and redeploy.

there would be generals fighting each other, using resources and man power utilizing tactics to gain control of territories and such.... but it all looks as stunning as MW2.

for example: you can start out as a medic, infantry, or artillery to begin with. a general deploys you to either an offensive or defensive battle with a pretty basic objective (such as hold down position x for 30 minutes).

each job has its different ability to rank up. like a medic can heal 5 people and rank up, survive the battle regardless of win or loss and rank up to field surgeon and have better stats for next battle.
or the infantry guy kills three people, survives the battle, and ranks up to platoon leader.... and eventually after like 5 or 6 awesome battles, you can become a general.

when you die, you start all over and wait for another deployment into battle.

My idea is a lot more detailed than what i have given so far, but you can fill in the blanks for yourself... the options are endless with ranking up to sniper, ranger, seal, spec ops, even being in charge of battleships and such.

but anyway... got away from my point... in the next few years I think we will start seeing the emergence of some kick ass MMOFPS games. Maybe far off from my hopes of a game, but it will start to take hold.

I like your idea, it almost reminds me a little of Stargate Worlds, although I doubt we'll ever actually see that one. There was an older WWII game that tried something like this too, but i can't remember the name and it didn't last very long. I definitely see games moving in that direction, but it's going to take a lot more than graphics and technology. You might need some very careful balancing with your respawn idea for example. Starting over every time you die sounds like it would get really frustrating, especially if there was a long wait involved. CS and Americas Army come to mind. Actually a lot of games have that problem now that I think about it.

It's a nice idea, but to be honest I wish the next "paradigm of gaming" will deviate more than that. Yours is more realistic as it will appeal to the masses more, but something entirely different in a market infested by shooters would be nice. How about a game following an animal's life, for the sake of an argument a wolf? A nice big open world, stick to the countryside as I don't really think developers are ready to create the AI needed to react to an animal in an urban environment, and then follow it as you have to keep it alive through preying, avoiding humanity, getting territories, mates etc. Maybe even make it online with interaction between animals.

Actually, I'm still a bit high, and reading over that it sounds like a retarded idea. It would be just too hard to make it realistic. Then again, that took me about 30 seconds to come up with, and I'm sure developers have got more time than that to think up something innovative.

A good MMOFPS would be fun.  Whatever happened to Huxley, I just stopped tracking that game after a while.

Yeah, all right, I said it was a retarded idea. I do believe that developers could easily make something more innovative though, but choose not to due to shooters, racers etc. being what the market wants.

If it's so easy to just come up with something innovative, why don't you do it?

Please, explain a concept that would be very fun that has never been done before.

Other than the animal life one... which would probably be about as fun as playing an office worker writing memos all day.

You play this big smiley massive worm thing, and you can stretch out how big you are, and you just move around a small randomly generated environment eating objects and then shitting them back out again. Everyone is connected online, and for all the meters people stretch themselves out, some massive worm thing in space stretches that many meters to the next planet. When it reaches a new planet, the developers create new models and environments based on the theme of that planet.

This game exists, and it's called Noby Noby Boy. It didn't sell too brilliantly, but it costs £4 on the Playstation store and I find it ridiculously fun. It'd be one of the best games on the Playstation if they expanded it and released it on disc format. I get bored of it a lot less quickly compared to, say, CoD, because it is much more original and I don't feel like "been there, done that". It's by the makers of We <3 Katamari.

And yes, I know that the game I wrote about above sounds retarded. Any ideas I come up with will probably sound the same. I'm not a game developer anyway. You know by asking me that question that I'm not going to suddenly blurt out some fantastic idea. It takes days to weeks of considering and planning, and even if I were a good game developer, I have other priorities to spend my time doing. Fact is, some developers do it. And the fact that they release a string of good, original games show it's no fluke or a single moment of inspiration.

If more developers spent more time thinking of something innovative rather than working on new lighting effects for graphics engines, I'd find games more enjoyable. But that's just me, not the market. All I stated was the direction I'd like the next paradigm of gaming to take.

Dude, The reality to is, People have millions of ideas about video games and the way the market should be each and every day. The only problem is having that type of advanced technology to actually apply the standards that it needs. I mean don't get me wrong, technology has came a long way since 2000. Its always on the rise and its always improving. But IMO, there is a limit. One day we won't be able to improve technology no more because we will be at that point where we are trying to make everything real life like. Too real. We will try to give video games emotions, feelings, and even the five basic senses of a normal human.

IMO, God created humans. Humans CAN'T create humans. It will never happen. And if it does happen it will be by supernatural means.

there will never be a ceiling to technology. read some kurzweil. technological discovery/innovation is an exponential curve... because every single technological discovery builds off all the previous ones.
with the advent of "the grid", where the majority of copper 12 guage coaxial cable is replaced with fiber optics, the bandwidth and capacity of MMO's will be limitless with the only thing being problematic is latency, and basically latency is only the perception of distance (length of time) between reality and actuality.

as of right now, even games as graphically rich as MW2, i can play against someone on the other side of the world and still only have half a second of latency. which is pretty amazing IMO.

you are under the assumption that reality is akin to the speed of light... but we can surpass the richness of reality, and we will do it fairly soon, unlike the speed of light which i doubt we will ever surpass.

There have been very few MMOFPS's so far, it's only a matter of time(short amount of time, I think) before more come out. The problem with most of these supposed MMOFPSs is that they claim to be massive... and it turns out to be some instance based crap thats not massive at all

To my knowledge, Planetside and WWII Online have been the only true MMOFPS's. I fucking loved Planetside, although it was HORRIBLY screwed up by the morons at Sony online entertainment. When PS first came out it was truly massive, there was nothing like it. Hell theres still nothing like it.

However SOE never advertised the thing and they completely ruined the game by nerfing stuff people loved and adding stuff people hated. Coupled with poor performance, incompetent devs, and a raised subscription fee despite no major updates/patches to the game in YEARS, literally. it died out in a few years.

Luckily PS2 is in the making atm, I cant wait to play it and have fun for a few years before the SOE fucktards screw it up again:whatever:

The NEXT paradigm in gaming needs to be religion wars. Build and construct religious ideas, memes, authority and try to battle or deflate other rising fundamentalist beliefs and establishments starting from a modern age like the dawn of man.

I was/am in the huxley closed beta. Ill cut to the point: its basically like UT3 but with tiny maps, where you have to annoyingly work for your guns and the closest you get to 'massively multiplayer' is what is essentially a 3D server matching room. By that I mean, you are either in a match or in a 'general area' that (like the maps) is tiny and has a few ppl waitin around for a server. So ya, huxley= crappy fps with a 3d waiting room while you pick a server. Only way it has a chance is if its free to play.

Global Agenda is another MMOFPS type game coming out in febuary that has potential. It is unfortunatly all instanced like huxley but hell i dono they may pull it off right. I like the style and TF2 flavored combat. And they recently changed it to free to play for general content but you can pay if your clan wants to compete with other clans for territory.
