Considering an HDTV purchase...mostly for gaming, advice?

Hey gang.  I got a bit of cash this christmas, and so now I'm thinking I might update my TV.  Right now I've got a 20" CRT television that suits my needs pretty well.  An upgrade to HD would be nice, as I do a fair amount of gaming, but that's about all I need.  Something in the 20-30" range would be nice, with a nice low price tag to boot.

Anybody have any advice on what to look for and what to avoid?  Where to go?

How risky is getting a refurbished TV?

I got a 42" Sony Lcd in my bedroom. and 48" Lcd in the living room.

they sure make gaming more interesting!

the prices for a hdtv in the size your wanting are so reasonable and competitive i wouldnt even think of going refurbished.

samsung and sony are both great brands. i have a samsung 46"

Vizio 32 inch 1080p HD is like 400 something I think.

They have 1080p down to 22 inches I believe, the smallest they go in full HD. And vizio is good, I know 3 different people with them and they have had no problems.

26 in Samsung 720P for $286 with free shipping.  It's out of stock but I would totally wait, that seems like a pretty bomb ass deal from what I'm seeing so far.

that's a great tv. samsung is top of the line in tvs these days.

3d is still pretty expensive right now, but it's something you might want to think about if you plan to use this tv for a while. by this time next year, there are going to be a lot of comparable tvs out with 3d compatibility. we finally took the plunge and got a 50" samsung 1080p on black friday, but i'm really regretting that we didn't just wait a little longer for a 3d compatible one.

Vizio FTMTW! they are an absolutely AMAZING up and coming brand, and the prices for even a 1080p lcd, or led (don't get plasma) are entirely worth it.
got my 47" lcd 1080i for a little less than $500 (BRAND NEW) and i use it with my PS3 and the PC in my sig at 1080i with beautiful picture and no problems for the last year (knock on wood).

$210 for a 22" Samsung

I'm not sure whether I think the extra 4" of screen space is worth another $76...my TV now is just a square CRT at 20" and it works great for the the space I have.

Ya dude, but that's $200 more and I'm a starving college student.  I live in a small one bedroom apartment (not a studio, though, I have a living room and a kitchen) and I just don't need something huge.  My living room is pretty small, my couch is like 7 ft away from the TV stand and if I'm playing games I've got chairs that I pull up close anyhow.  Plus if I do decide later when I'm making more money i want a bigger TV I can just use the smaller one as a computer monitor...

720p is plenty for the tv size that he is considering. the benefit of going from 720 to 1080 is hardly noticeable until you get to 40 inches or so.

not to say that isn't an awesome tv...just that you don't need to pay extra for 1080p on a tv that size.

Ok, so I bought the 22" one.  Since it's only running at 720p would I be able to notice a difference between component and HDMI with my Xbox 360 hooked up to it?

Component and HDMI are both capable of 720p.  So no, it won't matter.

EDIT: Looking at the link you posted, it's very weird your TV is 16:10.  Just thought I would throw that out there.  Never seen a 16:10 TV before.

16:10 is exceptionally common in the case of computer monitors.  Most manufacturers just add TV tuners and some inputs into a monitor and brand it as a TV, so it's easy to find a 16:10 aspect in a lot of smaller units.

The only benefit HDMI may have over component is that it can "speak" between devices.  In that I mean the TV can decipher which input device is on or off, and swap between them automatically.  For example, if you had a blu-ray player hooked up through HDMI and you walked over and opened the disc tray the TV would recognize this and turn on plus swap over to the correct input for you.

Its a really insignificant feature when you consider Microsoft's cables literally* cost you a nutsack.

Well I could just buy any HDMI cable I'm sure, but i think component will work.

Buy the cheapest HDMI cable you can find, Don't fall for the over priced ones.

Yeah, I'm not about to drop $90 on a fucking cable cause some douchebag in a polo shirt at Best Buy tells me it's the best.  That's ridiculous.

Don't even think I'm gonna get a cheapy.  I'll be fine with component cables.  They look decent on my friends 60" TV, I'm sure it'll be fine on a 22" :lol:
