Not all artists say the same thing though. What my tattoo artist does with his clients is wraps them with saran wrap when its done, tape it down. No paper towel. Tells you to leave it until night. That night take a shower, clean it good. There will be a thick layer of... goop... get all that off. Re-wrap it with saran wrap over night, do the same thing in the morning. The next morning is when you use an ointment he supplies or tells them what to get.

The saran wrap acts almost like a layer of skin in that it helps heal the tattoo faster, keeps all that stuff in there (that you clean after), and it helps. It's decreased healing time from about 2 weeks to 8-10 days. I can vouche for that.

that goop is applied before the saran wrap. i forget exactly what it is but it only needs to be on there for 2-3 hours.

you're not supposed to rewrap it because you want it to get air. i've been told by multiple artists not to, in fact

i've used bacitracin for ointment and one other that started with an A i forget its name but the bacitracin actually left me with the most colorful tattoo yet.

Aquaphor? I use aquaphor, but you need such a little amount because of it just because of the consistency of it. The tattoo gets air after the first night according to what I (and my artist) do.
