Images Uploaded Are Huge!

I've been uploading tons of resized to small
images in the past, and it always uploaded
neatly in my gallery in a thumbnail view
with the enhanced image viewer.
Means it displays as a small image but if
you click on it with the + it magnifies it.
Now when I upload it get HUGE images in
my gallery.
WTF?
