OK you guys have convinced me.

I'm still gonna try smoking some morphine base just to see what its like.  Its not as addictive as heroin right?  I'm pretty good with will power BTW

You can get just as addicted to poppy pods, morphine base, or oxycodone as you can to heroin.  A faster method of ingestion can mean a more powerful euphoric rush which certainly helps the addictive process along, but recreationally fucking around with any opiate is risky business.

I've smoked for 4 months then just decided to quit - no problem.  Did coke once 3 days in a row - decided not to touch it again and haven't touched it since - that was over a year ago.  I'm a reasonable person, I see drugs as useful or not useful not something I regularly abuse.

Pretty much all my friends are addicted to something and I find it ridiculous.  I'm 30 years old BTW and have experimented with drugs since 13 and I have no addictions other than on Friday night I enjoy experimenting with something.  Usually a few drinks or a small amount of weed.

Link please to scientific proof showing heroin doing direct harm to a human other than overdose?

Quote:
Researchers have found that young heroin users suffer a level of brain damage similar to that seen in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease.

The research team from the University of Edinburgh studied the autopsied brains of 34 drug users with a history of opiate abuse - mainly heroin and methadone. Most had died of a drug overdose, but all were HIV negative and had no history of head injuries.

They also looked at the autopsied brains of 16 people who had no history of drug abuse or neurological impairment.

The average age in both groups was 26 and drug abusers as young as 17 were included.

The study found that young drug abusers were up to three times more likely to suffer brain damage, than those who did not use drugs. The drug abusers meanwhile sustained a level of brain damage normally only seen in much older people and similar to the early stages of Alzheimer's.

"Our study shows evidence of an increased risk of brain damage associated with heroin and methadone use, which may be highest in the young, when individuals are most likely to acquire the habit", said lead researcher, Professor Jeanne Bell.

Professor Bell said that in a previous study, the research team found that drug abuse causes low grade inflammation in the brain. Taken together, she explained, the two studies suggest that intravenous opiate abuse may be linked to premature ageing of the brain.

Abstract  Approximately 3.7 million individuals have used heroin and other opiate substances in their lifetime. Despite increasing knowledge of the effects of heroin, it remains the most abused opiate and use among adults has recently increased. The empirical literature examining the neurocognitive effects of acute and chronic opioid use remains limited; however, findings to date suggest that the use of opiates has both acute and long-term effects on cognitive performance. Neuropsychological data indicate deficits in attention, concentration, recall, visuospatial skills and psychomotor speed with both acute and chronic opioid use. The long-term effects of opiate use appear to have the greatest impact on executive functions, including the ability to shift cognitive set and inhibit inappropriate response tendencies. Factors that contribute to addiction and recovery are also discussed, as it is difficult to disentangle the effects of opiate use on cognitive performance from other factors that may affect neurobehavioral measures.

Quote:
a study by Carlin (1986) found lower scores for opiate abusers than normal control subjects on measures of visuospatial and visuomotor function. A more recent study by Pakesch et al. (1992) compared opiate abusers to normal controls and found that opiate abusers scored significantly below control subjects on a visual memory recall test (Benton Visual Retention Test). Later, Ornstein and colleagues (Ornstein et al. 2000) found that chronic heroin use impaired performance on sequence generation tasks, spatial working memory and visual pattern recognition memory. In a Hong Kong based study by Lee and Pau (2002), investigators reported that individuals classified as ex-heroin addicts who had been abstinent from use for three to 18 months performed more poorly on a test of impulse control (qualitative score of the Porteus Maze Test) than control subjects. The authors state that the former heroin users were more reckless, ignored the rules of the test, and lacked an overall plan for solving the task relative to control subjects. Limited subject information was available, such as medication use, enrollment in a maintenance program, or poly-substance abuse diagnoses. Absence of these details make study results somewhat difficult to interpret.

Cortical function has been suggested to be highly compromised by repeated heroin self-administration. We have previously shown that street heroin induces apoptosis in neuronal-like PC12 cells. Thus, we analysed the apoptotic pathways involved in street heroin neurotoxicity using primary cultures of rat cortical neurons. Our street heroin sample was shown to be mainly composed by heroin, 6-monoacetylmorphine and morphine. Exposure of cortical neurons to street heroin induced a slight decrease in metabolic viability, without loss of neuronal integrity. Early activation of caspases involved in the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway was observed, culminating in caspase 3 activation, Poly-ADP Ribose Polymerase (PARP) cleavage and DNA fragmentation. Apoptotic morphology was completely prevented by the non-selective caspase inhibitor z-VAD-fmk, indicating an important role for caspases in neurodegeneration induced by street heroin. Ionotropic glutamate receptors, opioid receptors and oxidative stress were not involved in caspase 3 activation. Interestingly, street heroin cytotoxicity was shown to be independent of a functional mitochondrial respiratory chain, as determined using NT-2 rho(0) cells. Nonetheless, in street heroin-treated cortical neurons, cytochrome c was released, accompanied by a decrease in mitochondrial potential and Bcl-2/Bax. Pure heroin hydrochloride similarly decreased metabolic viability but only slightly activated caspase 3. Altogether, our data suggest an important role for mitochondria in mediating street heroin neurotoxic effects.

Quote:
Our findings indicate that chronic heroin did not interfere with mice performance in a battery of sensorimotor tests. On the other hand, cognitive ability in the Morris water maze and cognitive flexibility-related performance were strongly impaired by chronic heroin. These effects were associated with up-regulation of pro-apoptotic proteins such as Fas, FasL and Bad, in the cortex and hippocampus, indicating the activation of both the death receptor and the mitochondrial apoptotic pathways. Another indicator of apoptosis was the presence of TUNEL (TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling) positive cells scattered throughout the brain.

Your a fucking retard, opiates are neuroprotective if they're that bad why are millions of american prescribed them?

Obviously they do but I was trying to point out that that research is bullshit. I hate opiates but know they are one of the few very abused drugs that do not harm the human brain.

The research links previously posted clearly show the potential for opiate-induced brain damage.  I'm eagerly awaiting any source you'd like to offer that shows otherwise.

http://www.anesthesia-analgesia.org/cgi/content/full/97/6/1776 That's one I'm not gonna look for other ones cuz I don't do fucking opiates but I have discussed them with people who have degrees in pharmacology and toxicology and that's where I got the idea that morphine protects neurons. I'm sure opiate users here can tell you better though

I'm not denying that opiates are one of the healthiest drugs out there (disregarding their addiction potential) but it seems like they still can cause brain damage if abused.

Maybe they can fuck I'm just saying theres no way in hell they cause alzheimer's everytime that disease is mentioned in a study its almost always full of shit, its one the perfect scare tool these days "if u use drugs when your older you'll have alzheimer's" what could be worse than not remebering anything you did? I don't even care as I'm not an opiate user and don't even like opiates, I just don't like propaganda.

I'm surprised none of you have brought up the possibility of impurities in the drug? Maybe pure heroin or pure morphine are neuroprotective and the black market shit does the opposite? To me it seems that a dealer would have less moral qualms about cutting one of the most addictive and commonly known to be shitty drugs as opposed to say, weed.
Then again I'm not into the hard stuff so I'm just taking a shot in the dark.
I would like to add this though, I had bad anxiety problems all of a sudden. I mean really bad, I had insomnia and I the minute my head touched the pillow I would get anxiety. I went to the doctor to get blood work done. He said I had really low b12 and told me to take vitamins. After like two days it was gone.
That other guy who said exercise was also right, when I felt like I was going insane from anxiety the only thing that calmed me down even a little was pacing or going for a walk.

stay away from the H! it is the most deceptive drug on the planet. no it doesn't cause long term bodily deteriation. morphine is actually one of the most cleanly metabolized drugs on the planet. now the build up of cut and contaminants in your viens are a different story. things like necrosis, hepatitis, blood infection and stroke can come about from the dirty life an addict.

watch out with all opiates actually. most people get off on pods, vicoden (or other pain pills), opium or whathaveyou for years before they hooked on smack. esp pain pills! people just come to the conclusion that its easier, cheaper and not as hard on the body to just shift to smack. i know bcuz every single friend i have (minus 1 person) fell down this road.... including me. how does one get hooked on H? simple, a phone number of an h dealer. that seriously is all it takes. be real careful with morphine base. smokable morphine is an extremely potent and addictive opiate. its up there with heroin, in my honest opinion. its how jerry garcia got into opiate abuse actually. for him, like many others, it ended in a smack addiction.

heroin is fun and games until you realize whAT a physical addiction is like. the god damn withdrawls. the term addiction actually goes back to described "a bondage" and thats exactly what happends. your brain not only stops is regular production and distribution of endorphins, it opens up NEW receptor sites. when the drug is taken away, these receptors freak out and cry like a baby.... day and night. its like quitting food or something, thats how it feel. a hunger you cant shake. only 5%(TOPS!) of heroin addicts are said to successfully quit. some relapse years after being clean. i've had friends that have spent 3 years in rehab and think they were cured, only to stumble across the dope and relapse with no hesitation. not a single thought, just "yes please!" this is a very serious drug, take caution my friend. i'd reccomend getting to the stink of yer anxiety before trying to cover up the smell with chemicals. examine yerself and get to the root of yer anxiety. perhaps see a psych doctor and get on some meds. i find small amounts of klonepin to be the most effective. xanax is ok to. all other benzos make me too sedated to achieve and type of regular life (why am i telling you this). i have anxiety too and i thought exactly like you did.... "would smack help?" well after becoming a full blown junkie, i can honestly say no it didn't. it made my life worst. i wish i could go back to my old "anxious" life.... talk about a time that was truely stress free! now i'm a miserable, soul-less creep that hates my life.

thats my story. i really hope the stink of my rott will help you make the right choice.

heroin is like having the devil go down on you. it feels great until you realize that youve been cumming out yer soul.

Scary

I know what the roots of my anxiety are, I can trace it back to childhood.

It started with my neirghbour abusing me then I never wanted to come outside anymore because outside was where he could get me.  I got agoraphobic, even worse anything else that happened that felt like it was even slightly close, I avoided.

I ended up avoiding everything and anyone that made me feel even slightly bad.  As a result I avoided 90% of life.  I spend most of my time inside on the computer where I'm safe.

When I do go out I feel real nervous about everything, I'm always ready to defend myself from the masses of people that want to hurt, use or abuse me.  :-(

fuck #20. horrible advice.

i feel your pain buddy. i've wasted my life, limiting my environment to my room, where there was no one who could hurt me or judge me. growing up... my step father abused me everyday. im white and i grew up in the ghetto of all black people. i went to strict schools where i was always getting in trouble and being blacklisted as a "deviant" or "piece of shit." under these circumstances i lived my life in isolation with little human contact. i lost my ability to trust, love and share anything precious with anyone at a very young age. although my environment is a bit more comfortable now, the side effects from my past still linger. specifically social anxiety and paranoia. from this, if there's anything i can tell you is that drugs will make things worse. you won't be able to get over your problems hiding in the fog. actually you'll never shake it completely, you just have to learn to live with it. consider it a war wound. obviously it didn't phase you too much if you haven't killed yourself yet. you're still alive and your life is far from over.

i wish i could give you some exclusive advice that will solve all the pain and horror, but i cant. i'm still crippled by my past. although i wanted to let at least say, that you're not alone. i feel your pain and if there's ANY ADVICE i can pass your way..... it's stay the fuck away from heroin! the devil wears a red dress and will seduce the soul right out of you. you won't notice though, not until its too late.

don't give up the fight. life is worth fighting for. even a diseased soul-less bastard like me can see that.
