.3333(infinity) does not equal 1/3, but is merely an approximation. it ends somewhere.

think of it this way, if you take a peice of paper and somehow manage to rip into (infinity) peices, and you toook one away, it would no longer be 100% of that peice of paper.

please dont try to belittle my intelligence as its not a very profesional way to go about persuading anybody that you are right, nor will it keep this topic ON topic.

you would have to take a bit away for it to be .999999(infinity) and the its not 100%

if you didnt take anything away, it would be 100%

How does something that continues to infinity 'end somewhere'?

No one is trying to persuade you. This is not a debate.

Have you actually read the proofs presented in this topic? Can you please find an error in any one of them and disprove the fact being discussed?

Your intuition is flawed. No one is belittling your intelligence, but you've clearly failed to comprehend this concept. Not everything in math is as intuitive as elementary school arithmetic.

x^0 = 1. Do you agree, or must I "persuade you?"

If you do, explain to me how anything "multiplied by itself zero times" is 1.

x^1/2 is the same as square root(x). Do you agree? If so, explain to me how something can even be multiplied by itself "one half time."

Man, this whole thread is founded on ignorance. If you do not believe 0.333... = 1/3 then drop your philosphy class and take some Calculus.

Infinity isnt a tool. Infinity is a state of bieng. Specifically, an "unbounded" or "non finite" state.

The calculus you mentioned above is the tool. It uses inifinity to work. Like a hammer is a tool that uses gravity to work.

> .3333(infinity) does not equal 1/3, but is merely an approximation. it ends somewhere.

Really? Where does something that continues forever, end? I will tell you... it ends 1/infinity less than 1/3... and since we know that 1/infinity equates to zero, then it ends at 1/3 (I doubt you would argue 1/3-0=1/3), therefore 0.3333...(repeating) is exactly equal to 1/3 and is not meerly an approximation.

> please dont try to belittle my intelligence

I'm not trying to belittle your intelligence. If your mind can't grasp the concept, then your mind cannot grasp the concept. This is not a belittlement, but a fact. I have plenty of things that others find very easy that I cannot grasp. This doesn't mean that I am not intelligent, only that my mind is too small to grasp some concept. Spelling and economics are both good examples of subjects that I find very difficult. Again, just because I have trouble speeling correctly, or remembering the difference between net and gross, does not mean that I am not intelligent... rather, my mind is too small to grasp those concepts. However, I realize that my grasp of spelling and economics isn't that great. When somebody educated in those fields corrects me on an issue related to those fields, I tend to trust their education over my own intutuion.

> Oh, ok, I see the difference between the philosophical concept of Infinity and the mathematical one.

A very important distinction.

> Infinity isnt a tool. Infinity is a state of bieng. Specifically, an "unbounded" or "non finite" state.

Does this hold true for all number spaces? I remember there being some crazy space where infinity was 'assigned' a value (opposite of zero, I think), but I don't remember the details... whatever the space was, divide by 0 was defined as well. Not too important... it has been too long and the math was way over my head, anyway.

If 0.333[repeating] is simply the nearest decimal approximation of 1/3, then surely 0.999[repeating] can't be the nearest decimal approximation of 1/1, as 0.999[repeating] is three times further away from 1/1 as 0.333[repeating] is from 1/3?

If the nearest decimal expressible value to 1/3 is 0.333[repeating], and we multiply it by three, then the "difference" between 0.333[repeating] and 1/3 is three times greater between 0.999[repeating] and 1/1.

How can you acount for the "difference" being bigger between 0.999[repeating] and 1, than between 0.333[repeating] and 1/3 ?

Curse you, base 10!

i understood this!  except the part about base 10.  this is fun, i haven't had such an intelligent conversation in years, its entertaining to go back and read it again.  oh and i totally believed everything i said when i said it.

i feel like if i finally figure this out, my head will split in two and i'll arrive in heaven

i think the whole 1/3 = .333 repeating is accepted as true as a utility.  it works in the "world" for "practical purposes," but

.999999999....99999999 repeating, by its very definition, the 9's never end.  you keep adding and adding 9's, and theres ALWAYS ROOM FOR MORE.  so how could you say, "ok, thats close enough", we've reached 1.

you cant, because you've gotta sit there and add nines till kingdom comes because of your laziness and debauchery and thats good punishment.    again, this assumption (.9repeating=1) works for practical purposes, but its not entirely TRUE.  and like it says in the bible, the truth shall set you free, the TRUTH: not a nice right angle on a skyscraper, or whatever this beautiful stuff is used for these days

There is no debate, it has been proved and the proof is simple.  There is only people who are smart, but ignorant at math who try to 'feel' their way to the answer.  (.999... =1) is absolutely true under the standard axioms of mathematics, it is not an approximation it is exact.  It would be (and is) as dumb of a debate as 1+1=2, which is also always true under the regular axioms.

So one could say... 1 does not equal .9999 {infinity} and still be correct because numbers could be anything to any being anywhere.

In math, you can say anything you want, but some statements (like 1 is not equal to .999 repeating) have consequences in other areas of math that cause the whole thing to stop representing the observed world.

You can say that 2 + 1 = 5, and you can even invent huge mathematical constructs based on that. But when you go grocery shopping and put 2 apples in your basket, then you add 1 apple, your basket will always end up containing 3 apples, not 5.

You can do this at the grocery store down the street or in another galaxy, in English or Chinese. It doesn't matter: you will always end up with 3 apples in your basket, not 5.

Same goes for 1 = .999 repeating. You can say it's not true all you like, but later when you start to study math at a deeper level than third grade intuition about arithmetic, you will find all of math that is so useful and consistent, and that so well represents reality will stop working.

You guys may not see this now, but a few weeks into your first calculus class, you will.  :smirk:

even on opposite day negative 2 apples + negative 1 apple will NEVER = negative 5 apples...

see?

Re: .999...(repeating) = 1 [Re: legallyhomeless]
    #11608385 -

You should point to which step in the proof you think is in error.

If you agree with every step of the proof, then you agree with the proof. Otherwise, point to the step you disagree with.

Here it is again for reference:

.9999999 (repeating) is another way of writing EXACTLY 1.

Here's why:

First, you'll agree that

1) 1/3 = .3333333... exactly

and so by simple addition we get

2) .3333333... + .3333333... +.3333333... = .9999999...

now by substituting 1/3 for .3333333... (because remember, we just established ^^^ up there in line 1 that they are the same thing) we go from this

3) .3333333... + .3333333... +.3333333... = .9999999...

to this

4) 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = .9999999...

[Note that all we did was replace the .3333333 with the 1/3 which you already agreed are EXACTLY equal to each other in line 1.]

Next, by simple addition of fractions, you see that

5) 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1

Since 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 is equal to both EXACTLY .9999999... and EXACTLY 1 at the same time (you just agreed to this is in lines 1 and 4) we can substitute 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 with .9999999 in line 5 and get this result:

6) .9999999... = 1

So once again, if you can't point to which line in the proof is wrong, then you agree they are all right and that the proof is true.

If not, point to where the mistake is. Don't just gloss over this. Really go through the reasoning or you'll never understand.

Man, I can't believe this thread is back.  Seuss proved it perfectly with the limits, why is it so hard for some people to accept?  You could write billions and billions of nine's after the decimal place and, no, that wouldn't equal exactly zero, but "0.999..." is equal to one.  They are the exact same number.  What is the problem here?
