Bourbon is whiskey.  And JD is as near bourbon as anything else, only a mere technicality of location makes it 'tennessee' vs 'bourbon' whiskey.

Bourbon is whiskey dude.  Its called bourbon whiskey...  Or are you just trying to be elitist?

I may be wrong on the JD classification.  Is it the charcoal mellowing, or the sour mash that makes it not technically bourbon?

you can make whiskey in a bourbon barrel but you can't make bourbon in a whiskey barrel.

JD is not bourbon.  Its tennessee whiskey.  Even a raging alcoholic with no self control doomed to murder many people via car can figure that one out.

bourbon is a type of whiskey, just like scotch is a type of whiskey.
And to diecommie, bourbon is sour-mashed, which is what makes jd so similar. The difference does indeed lie in the charcoal filtering, and the aging.

Ok.  You can make tequila in a whiskey barrel too, so what?  Bourbon is a whiskey.

It appears from this that JD is not a bourbon because of its mash, rather then its location or charcoal filtering.

Here you tried to claim that JD is basically bourbon, and that because it is made in TN it is technically not.  When in reality its not bourbon its TN whiskey.  This is a really dumb argument.

I believe where oregon might be comming from is that you CANT make bourbon in regular whiskey barrels. They need to be made in a certain type of barrel to be considered a bourbon. Its still whiskey though, lol.

No its not.  There are very fine, slight differences between Tennessee and Bourbon whiskey.  As you can see from the link I posted above, Tennessee isnt an 'official' category like bourbon is - its more of a colloquial term.  Tennessee whiskey still conforms to all the regulations that bourbon does, but the difference in the mash and perhaps the charcoal filtering is what makes it technically not bourbon (rather then the location which the link I posted doesnt mention).  Tennessee whiskey is more like bourbon then any other kind.

All bourbons are whiskey, but not all whiskeys are bourbon...Whisky is an alcoholic distillate from a fermented mash of grain produced at less than 190 proof in such a manner that the distillate possesses the taste, aroma, and characteristics generally attributed to whiskey, stored in oak containers (except that corn whisky need not be so stored), and bottled at not less than 80 proof, and also includes mixtures of such distillates for which no specific standards of identity are prescribed.

For a whiskey to qualify as bourbon, the law--by international agreement--stipulates that it must be made in the USA. It must be made from at least 51% and no more than 79% Indian corn, and aged for at least two years. (Most bourbon is aged for four years or more.) The barrels for aging can be made of any kind of new oak, charred on the inside. Nowadays all distillers use American White Oak, because it is porous enough to help the bourbon age well, but not so porous that it will allow barrels to leak. It must be distilled at no more than 160 proof (80% alcohol by volume). Nothing can be added at bottling to enhance flavor or sweetness or alter color. The other grains used to make bourbon, though not stipulated by law, are malted barley and either rye or wheat. Some Kentucky bourbon makers claim that the same limestone spring water that makes thoroughbred horses' bones strong gives bourbon whiskey its distinctive flavor. Kind of like that "it's the water" thing with Olympia beer.

Bourbon can be made anywhere in the U.S., but all but a couple of brands are made in Kentucky. Only the state of Kentucky can produce bourbon with its name on the label. The name comes from Bourbon county in the central bluegrass region of Kentucky. This county was named in 1785 to honor the French royal family and was once the major transshipment site for shipping distilled spirits down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans. Barrels shipped from there were stamped with the county's name, which then became the name of this kind of whiskey. Interestingly, there are no distillers in Bourbon county, Kentucky right now.  :beergirl:

And just to add, Jack Daniels is a respectable company in that they never sacrifice quality and are known for that.  However I just don't agree with the taste really.  I used to mostly drink rye whiskeys as Im a jew

Ah I rarely make mixed drinks, honestly Im not even sure whats in a Manhattan (Vermouth?).  Well jews like rye in general, rye bread etc.. maybe thats just Eastern Europeans in general however.  I mostly used to switch back and forth from American whiskeys to Scottish whiskys to Irish whiskys.  Actually most people dont realize how delicious some Irish whiskys (single malt) are.  They are very distinct from Scotch and have some unique flavors to them

Manhattens are typically rye and sweet vermouth with bitters. I like mine with equal parts bourbon (or jacks) sweet and dry vermouth, with angostura and cherries. My favorite drink ever.
I agree, some irish whiskies are very good. Redbreast is one I've tried and really enjoyed.
