You can't just pin down what a rainbow gathering is unless you are talking about a National Gathering.
I imagine it varies just as much in other countries outside of the US.
What a rainbow gathering is SUPPOSED to be, is a loving community centered on sharing and helping each other and leaving no trace on the land.
Then you have what they call DRAINBOWS, people who 'join' the rainbow community but with no heady vibes, no heady vibes at all.
They are called drainbows because they are a drain on the community.. they just take take take, and never give back,
and usually are the ones bringing the shady drugs like crack, meth and h. People like this fuck with the scene hardcore.


seeing as how I reside in Europe, I would go to next years gathering in Finland, so I'm pretty curious as to what to expect.

I've heard the European rainbow gatherings are quite magical and true to the spirit.
I wouldn't have too many expectations. Go expecting to help.

well it used to be an underground society. the rainbow family was moving loads of acid and to be let into their circle was a sign of trust. these days the gatherings are advertised on websites and the public can attend. it's still a haven for great hippie people but because of its notoriety it also attracts a lot of the "bad" druggie crowd.

You go into the woods and set up your camp. Then you walk around and visit other camps, meet everyone at the main circle at 420 for a giant smoke session. Then everyone goes their ways again. You go the kitchen to get free food, or visit the bazaar to trade, or get naked and have sex with your partner in the woods. when night falls, you light camp fires, sing, smoke, laugh, when morning rises, it's a new day.

It's just life in the woods among others in a community.

i have no idea what the "real" family is like, and i have no doubt that they're a great bunch of really good people, but...

up in the state forest land in a remote corner of my state, there was a rainbow gathering two summers in a row.
it was basically a huge congregation of bums, filthy hippies and general fucktards. people who think that they should not have to work to get the needed things in life.
if you have food and they see it, they'll do and say anything to make you give them some.
if you have a nice sweater on, and maybe a nice coat over that, they'll give you 1000 reasons why you should give them either one, the other, or both.
if you have drugs, they'll tell you all the reasons why you should give them some.

it's fucking pathetic. basically, it's a gathering of thousands of "wookies" or "wook 17"s or whatever that dread locked "brahs" name was.
i've never in my life been more turned off by members of the human race.
like i said, i'm sure the original family and the original rainbow people were/are great, but this "bumfest" is what has made me for the most part, hate hippies.

Yeah. That's the impression I got when I was there. Others do have a point though about the scene being tainted. You will find your share of sketchy druggies and trustful communalists, rowdies and artists. Go with a friend or a group of friends, and you'll set yourself up for an interesting time. :earth:

Custie pricks who just want to score drugs and wont give their extra jacket to a shirtless man on a cold night do not belong at Rainbow.

Rainbow Gatherings are great, the drainbows ruin it. "tweakers" or "two-weekers" are the tourists who come for a week just to get high. These people look at rainbow gathering as a festie and SHOULD NOT COME. They give nothing back to the community, often wont work in a kitchen, gather firewood, dig a shitter or share their stash. It's usually the "hobos" and "filthy hippies" as you guys refer to them that bust their asses making the thing work. Im sick of these college kids ruining the vibes with their capitalist ideals and sticking their noses up at those who walk to the beat of a different drum.

Rainbow is about SHARING. You folks who wont share your sweaters and burritos with someone less fortunate than you frankly sicken me. I'd give someone the shirt off my back if they needed it more than I did.

I was there first time this August to the official european gathering in Ukraine, it was amazing :laugh:

First of all, I don't know about the american gatherings, but about drugs, they are there, but not in abundance - if you find anything, it's usually pretty good, One hippie brought a LOT of ice-o-lator and sold it for pennies, high times :awesome:

Anyways, dirty happy people everywhere, it's a great place to talk with new people from everywhere, play drums or make some other sort of musical arrangements with the good people, enjoy particiapating in work shops that random people start up during the camp time, there can be shamanic discussions, herbal teachings, healing circles, tantra workshops, mushroom finding workshops :b
It's like lots of love, especially if you feel like doing things, meeting new people and exploring being in a beautiful enviorment, not constantly drugged out yknow :b, even if ya just wanna kick back in nature for a time doing nothing its good too!
I really reccomend helping out as much as possible there too, there will always be places to help out, making food, carrying it, chopping wood, finding lost children, working on your chillum smoking skills, whatevers :laugh:

It's far from your avarage festival place, a comunity of good people getting together to help and live with eachother in peace for a while and enjoy what we have :laugh:

My friend did a rode trip by himself on his motorcycle from the bay area(cali) to mexico. On the way there he ran into a rainbow gathering out in the middle of the desert and decided to spend a few days there. hes no hippie but he said it was a really cool experience. People came from all parts of the world. According to him as far as gatherings go it was the most primitive homely non materialistic gathering hes been to or heard of.

If you bust your ass helping the family you will not go a single day without what you seek.

If you spend the whole gathering seeking out drugs you will get bunked and I hope you get bunked.

Thats how it works, it's a mechanism to weed out the drainbows.

A kid can come with NOTHING, dig a shitter, grab some firewood, start a fire, cook lunch, build a shower, and get smoked out // dosed by old hippies for doing their chores.

Another kid can come with their stack of bills, walk around the whole time looking for drugs, get turned away when they offer money in exchange, eventually when they get fed up with that they walk around saying "dose me" and these type of people get fed RCs.

You wont get anything if you wont give anything. Give up the self.
