Uh Oh....Rainbow Gathering.

Colorado Rainbow Gathering News

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS - Thousands of campers flocking to a gathering of the Rainbow Family won't face eviction from a meadow north of town but could face fines and jail time.

The fines and jail time are possible because the U.S. Forest Service denied them a permit, officials said Friday.

The counterculture group originally didn't apply for the permit, required of any gathering of more than 74 people, even though the event is expected to draw 20,000 people. When some members did apply this week, officials denied it, citing fire danger, limited road access and other planned events nearby.

Rangers will warn campers as they arrive, give them a chance to leave and cite them if they don't, Forest Service spokeswoman Denise Ottaviano said. They could be fined up to $5,000 and a possible 6-month jail term.

Ottaviano said the Rainbow Family campers are putting themselves in potential danger because high fire danger and poor access to the meadow in the Routt National Forest.

Much of the surrounding forest full of fire-prone trees killed by a beetle infestation, a drought has left vegetation dry, and only one road leads to the campsite, she said.

On Thursday, there was a human caused fire that Rainbow gathers attempted to put out unsuccessfully. The fire, which was less than one-tenth of an acre, was put out by a Forest Service engine. The cause is under investigation.

Campers are parking along the access road, slowing traffic and possibly making it difficult for emergency vehicles to get in, she said.

The gathering of the loosely-organized group is slated for July 1-7, but early arrivals have already set up camp and been cited. Ottaviano said some of those cited did report as ordered to a federal magistrate, who set up court in a fire station near the site. Others did not show up and a bench warrant has been issued for their arrest. Law enforcement officials will actively pursue the warrants. There was a 95% conviction rate of the citations written.

Rainbow Family is angry they are being targeted. "One of our most basic and easily understood constitutional rights is being violated here," said John Young with Rainbow Family.

The Forest Service has asked for help from the Colorado State Patrol and the Routt County Sheriff's Department to monitor the gathering, but Ottaviano said they will not try to force anyone to leave or turn back.

"If we tried to go in there and remove 20,000 people, it would be violent," she said. "There's no way the very limited manpower we have could forcibly remove them ....Yes, they are going to come."

"The rainbows aren't being treated any differently than anyone else," said Diann Ritschard with the U.S. Forest Service.

"The rainbow families did not work with the forest service ahead of time to choose a location," said Ritschard.

Ottaviano said authorities will help the campers make sure kitchens and latrines are set up correctly to ensure public safety.

Ottaviano said the group did not give the Forest Service much notice of its plans, which would have given officials time to prepare or suggest alternative camping sites.

An unofficial Rainbow Family Web page, http://www.welcomehome.org, gives directions to the site, about 20 miles north of Steamboat Springs, and tells followers, "Ignore all rumors of cancellation."

"There's absolutely no alternative and nowhere to go for these people," said Young.

The Rainbow Family describes itself on the Web site as an unorganized band of like-minded people seeking peace and harmony. The group's first national gathering was in 1972. There is no charge to attend, although members pass "the Magic Hat" to collect money for food.

Are the dead fam/followers and the rainbow fam the same clique or are they different gangs altogether? I've always wondered this.

I find it hard to believe that they didn't apply for permits for this gathering until a few weeks ago! If this is true then maybe they really are just a bunch of irresponsible, idealistic hippies who have no regard for the work done by the Forest Service...

This is just going to tarnish their image more...

This from Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Gathering

"All major American Gatherings are held on National Forest land, which is under the jurisdiction of the United States Forest Service, a federal agency. The Forest Service has often tried to prevent the gatherings from taking place or insisted that a group-use permit be signed. The government contends that this is standard practices for large groups wishing to camp on public land and that it is necessary to protect public safety and the local environment. A large majority of participants of the Rainbow family gatherings affirm that the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights give them the right to peaceably assemble on public land and that requiring a permit would violate that basic right by turning it into a privilege to be regulated.

Participants also affirm that respect for the land is a basic tenet of their philosophy and allege hypocrisy on the part of the Forest Service because it allows Logging, Mining, Grazing and a host of other interests that run counter to good stewardship of public lands."

There's quite a bit of overlap among the hard core folk. It's generally the same vibe.

The true rainbow people are good people. The problems usually stem from hangers-on and people just looking for a good time, drugs, and girls. These are most often the people who create the problems. It's a shame, really...

Yeah, that's right up there with the one where Bobby joins the "Christ Rocks!" movement...

I like Hank Hill. He's just a simple man who wants to sell clean-burning propane and propane accessories in a world gone mad...

No, the only event I'm going to this year is the Oregon Country Fair. It's a more organized hippie-fest, and it's close by...

When is the Oregon country fair?

the latest from alt.gathering.rainbow

Quote:

Situtation is A-OK
A person at the site at this moment reports.
No permit signed, unless you count the ATV Rally and the Logging.
Roadblock down. Site is beutiful. Bring bug spray. Cold at night.

First rainbow gathering in years with no permit signed. Nobody can
speak for what happens tomorrow, but the roadblock is down and cars are
not being routinely ticketed, and folks are NOT getting the illegal
camping citation.

We are the last people who will ever enjoy this land as the creator
intended. It's going to be logged and used for ATV races.
