Top dry layer of verm colonize?
    #1133142 - 12/11/02 03:59 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

on my brf jars it looks all colonized except towards the lid area through the glass you can still see some verm uncolonized, i think its the dry verm, is it supposed to colonize before birthing?

No, the top layer of verm should be dry and loose.

You can remove it if you want. Are you going to fruit it as a cake or case it?

nope its dry and loose...if you tip the jar upside down you can hear it hitting the lid

if all is colonized except the dry top layer you are good to go!

the top dry vermiculite layer acts as a buffer for contaminants and as far as i know should not colonize

the bottom crust on my friend's verm layer stayed stuck to the top of his cakes. He was afraid to damage any myc. so he did not violently scrape off to remove that top layer, is that too much of a bad thing?

The verm doesn't really even need to be scraped. It all has to do with keeping the terrarium tidy.

to put things correctly, the top dry verm layer is for protection reason only. Its verm, which means it has NO nutrients, so, there is no reason for it to be colonised.

Sometimes, if the myc is aggressive and the jar is 100% colonized and u have lots to do and dont birth it, the myc can climb thru the verm layer in order to find new food. But thats okee, no problemo.

GOOD LUCK ~~~~~~~~~~~~
