Its possible that the earth is going through a warming phase.  But its a fact that when you pump CO2 into the atmosphere a this rate it WILL cause the earth to become warmer.

Which brings up, why should one care if it only speeds up a naturally occurring cycle?

Every time I read one of these threads I get dumber. This issue might as well be abortion vs pro-life; people seem to pick a position and run with it. While the issue of anthropogenic warming may be as yet unsettled, I can say without a doubt that I see more unsupported statements and purely anecdotal references used as an appeal by proponents of one side of the issue. I guess I'll leave it to the reader to guess which side that is.

exactly, i agree 100%. i personally think the whole debate is irrelevant. any idiot can see that the climate is changing, weather patterns are changing and will continue to change because the bottom line is we live on a dynamic planet. so who gives a fuck which side is right? i'd rather focus on how we're going to deal with less viable agricultural land in the future or an epic refugee situation. most of the world's population lives near a coast, and it will be a disastrous situation if sea levels keep rising consistently over the next 10 years. not being alarmist here, it's just a fact that we need to deal with.

I could care less really, seeing as how I'm not having children and will probably be long gone before any of this affects me. (selfish I know but, I'm here to live MY life, not the lives of the future) Judging by what I've heard and read, I'm leaning toward the BULLSHIT side of it.

Ecosystems are very specifically balanced.  Its like one big symbiotic relationship.

If the temperature rises too fast for evolution to adapt to, then certain plants can't grow there.  And the animals that eat those plants can't eat them.  And the animals that eat the animals that eat the plants can't eat them....  you get the point.

Pfft!  We don't need any of these fancy "scientists" to tell us what to think.  We all know the Earth isn't warming, that it was created in 6 days, and that Building 7 was brought down by thermite.  Stupid scientists...

Building 7 and thermite is WAYYYY different than global warming.

You think you know a lot about global warming and how fake it is?  You should e mail my old professor.  She kinda knows something about the subject.

What's the ideal temperature of the Earth?

Or a better question is what is the ideal rate at which the Earth warms and cools?

And who or what benefits from this ideal rate?  People?  Plants?  A species of fish?  Or just generally an earth without people?  Great.  Just fucking great.  We are fucking people!

So who was taking the earths temp during the last ice age?

No one.

All the information we have on the earths temp prior to human recording is just an educated guess.

We really do not know what the fucking temps were 1000 years ago, much less 100,000 years

The "educated guesses" of scientists are based on very reliable data.  Don't sucker yourself into thinking that not having a thermometer and a time machine means we can't get good, reliable data on past climates.

Re: Global Warming Hoax [Re: Neuron]

I am writing a paper discussing the co-evolution of the idea of global warming (not to be confused with climate change), and I coincidentally encountered this thread somehow. Leaving my $0.02.

There is just no data anywhere indicating climate change is human-mediated, sorry.

No one has any idea what is really going on. Let's not base our assumptions exclusively as an appeal to authority or pretending to stand on the shoulders of giants. At least be aware that 31,000 scientists have signed petitions denying man-made global warming. This is just one example. Funny that despite their credibility, unless they are elaborating how crazy and anti-progressive these folks are, you rarely see the opposing position(s) in media or advertising. After all, companies can't sell green ideas, only green products.

Don't pretend our simple mammalian ideologies have the predictable power to determine what lies eminently ahead of us, and further how the "whole world!" should hasten our solutions less we never grab the reigns and slow the disastrous, impending changes. Sound familiar?

"Antarctic Sea Ice Up Over 43% Since 1980, Where Is The Media?"

Eschatological fear is a human archetype. Every subsequent generation will imaginatively come to believe they are on the edge, usually manifesting as a deep-seated conviction that a coming threat will only be surmounted with a certain degree of conformity and cooperation among people. It's embedded in our collective identity--it can be seen expressed in our history throughout religions, mythology, political agendas, coups, mass migrations, etc.

Conundrums, fabricated or not, are great motivators: they encourage proactivity. Being the United States of Amnesia, however, we forget our own historical trends that have encouraged change within the political/industrial paradigms.

Unique to this dilemma is not that the perceived threat is ourselves [insert sin and repentance scenarios], but that the result is a magnificent amount of cooperation and cohesion which it encourages among our modern technological societies. Becoming less selfish and ego-centric, and instead becoming more in tune with the environment and realizing how relationally interdependent our own existences are; this is what is truly important.

For the record, pollution is bad, overpopulation is bad, habitat destruction is bad, breathing in carcinogens is bad, ad nauseum to the extent of "no fucking shit". Objecting to the theory of global warming should not result in someone being scrutinized as being an opponent of the health of humanity or our natural environments. In any case, still take everyone's advice and Ph.D badges as a grain of salt. No one is in control and no one knows anymore about the universe than you do. Even our own sense perceptions are merely abstractions and representations of what is "out there".

--------------------------------------------------------------

Richard Siegmund Lindzen,
Atmospheric Physicist at MIT:

"[t]here is no consensus, unanimous or otherwise, about long-term climate trends and what causes them" and "I cannot stress this enough -- we are not in a position to confidently attribute past climate change to carbon dioxide or to forecast what the climate will be in the future. That is to say, contrary to media impressions, agreement with the three basic statements tells us almost nothing relevant to policy discussions."

Leonard Weinstein
Former Senior Research Scientist at NASA:

"It appears that there is NO real supporting evidence and much disagreeing evidence for the AGW theory as proposed. That is not to say there is no effect from human activity. Clearly human pollution (not greenhouse gases) is a problem. There is also almost surely some contribution to the present temperature from the increase in CO2 and CH4, but it seems to be small and not a driver of future climate. Any reasonable scientific analysis must conclude the basic theory wrong!"

Fred Singer
Atmospheric Physicist

"Climate change is a natural phenomenon. Climate keeps changing all the time. The fact that climate changes is not in itself a threat, because, obviously, in the past human beings have adapted to all kinds of climate changes."

"The Earth currently is experiencing a warming trend, but there is scientific evidence that human activities have little to do with it. Instead, the warming seems to be part of a 1,500-year cycle (plus or minus 500 years) of moderate temperature swings."

Patrick J. Michaels
Ph.D. Climatology

"Why is the news on global warming always bad? Perhaps because there's little incentive to look at things the other way. If you do, you're liable to be pilloried by your colleagues. If global warming isn't such a threat, who needs all that funding?"

Can I assume, then, that you don't believe in evolution, continental drift, the Big Bang, etc., because they're all "just guesses"?

Evolution has been proven, so has continental drift.
These are things that we can see happening and measure.

The Big Bang can not be proven, it is another educated guess.

I never said that I don't believe the earth goes through climate changes, quite the opposite actually.

Just that we do not know what the temps of the earth were prior to humans recording it. Those numbers are educated guesses, not facts.
