Need Some Quick Advice! Lions Tigers and Bears OH MY!

Just bears actually. A bear was spotted around campus the day before I was planning to hike around some of the trails around my school. Should I be worried, and spend my afternoon inside, or should I go hike anyway? I just keep thinking how dumb it's going to sound when I end up mauled or killed after having a bear warning sent out 2 days before. Also, I would be hiking by myself without a knife or spray! Thanks!

Not enough details, but I would do it anyways. Plus, who doesn't like a good bear chase?

What kind of bear? That makes a big difference.
If a bear chases you, run downhill because you can do it much faster than they can, unless you're real chubby or something.

The best way to ward off bears is to carry bear-bells (for noise) and cans of pepper spray. Always be on the lookout for bear scat in the area. An easy way to identify bear scat is that it's full of bear-bells and cans of pepper-spray.
I know, it's an old joke...

They didn't specify I'm almost positive its a black bear, I don't think brown bears live in Northern NJ. Also, I'm in shape and could potentially run for my life.I am not sure if it will make a difference if I wait to go out hiking or just go now really.

Don't be lame what are the odds that you are going to cross paths with a blood thirsty grizzly bear trying to get it's fill before hibernation?

To decrease the likelihood of a bear being attracted to campus, everyone should properly dispose of garbage and should never leave food out for animals or birds.
To date, no one on campus has been injured by a bear.
Please note that bears are dangerous wild animals and female bears are extremely dangerous when they believe their cubs are at risk of being injured. Under no circumstances should you attempt to photograph or approach a bear in any way.
If you should encounter a bear at a distance, please respond to the presence of the bear in the following manner:
o Do not approach the bear.
o Make the bear aware of your presence by making noise.
o Call Campus Police (XXXXXXX) and report the bear as soon as possible.
o If you encounter the bear at close range, please respond to the bear in the following manner:
§ Remain standing,
§ Avoid direct eye contact,
§ Back up SLOWLY,
§ Speak aloud in a calm yet assertive voice, and
§ Call Campus Police (XXXXXXXX) and report the bear as soon as possible.
§ If you are inside a vehicle and observe a bear, please remain in the vehicle, sound your horn, and contact Campus Police if possible. Keep in mind that the noise from your horn may scare the bear away but it also alerts other people to the presence of the bear.
In addition, everyone should comply with the following five rules:
1. Never follow a bear, or encourage others to form a group to follow a bear.
2. Never leave food out in the open or in your vehicle.
3. Never hike alone in the adjacent wooded areas.
4. Never provoke the bear.
5. Never feed the bear. It is illegal in New Jersey to do so.

I worry about giant robot bears. The very thought of them keeps me awake at nights. It's starting to interfere with my life. I went to a support group for Robot Bear Phobics (or RBPs) last week, but the group was run by a robot bear. He was in a human costume, but it didn't fool me...

*It is also illegal in NJ to dress up bears in costumes for gambling purposes. Except for Atlantic City where a permit is required.
