MP3-Player purchase advice
    #11283161 - 10/20/09 10:23 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

My current MP3-Player is starting to give up (Archos Gmini XS202 (best ever))
after several years of daily use.

So I did a little research what's on the market recently and fount the following...
I'm interested if anyone has one of these or can make recommendations for other mp3-players with up to 20GB space (flash or hd) low price + file directory (important! hate ID3), very basic, not tooo many useless gadgets please!

Sandisk Sansa Clip

+ good price
+ small / sturdy
- only 8 GB

Archos 2

+ good price
+ display size
+ SD Cardslot (so 8gb is not that bad in this case :yesnod: )
(+ color display to view vids/pics) (not that important for me)
(+ design)
- half of reviews on amazon are negativ...

Creative ZEN Mozaic

+ speakers
(+ design)
+ display size
- price
- only 8 GB

thanks in advance!

i don't have any of those, but i've had a creative zen vision m for over 5 years now, and surprisingly it still works.  so that's a testament to creative build quality.

however, i have heard the most positive things about the sandisk sansa.  and in fact, there is an article on anythingbutipod.com that says apparently you can achieve nearly 40gb capacity using a SDHC to microSDHC adapter, if you don't mind the piece hanging out.  http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2009/09/sansa-clip-40gb-possible-with-adapter.php

I have had two Sandisks and they both crapped out. i know the ones i had, the firmware??? wasnt updated, but other than that i really enjoyed mine. Im not the most gifted on a computer, so you or someone else can probably keep up with the firmware updates.

Just make sure you Disconnect it properly. I took mine out a moment too soon, and it corrupted....fuckin 8gbs of uselessness.....ugh

i was reading through the comments and someone mentioned using velcro tape to keep the adapter attached to the back.

and there is the initial 15 minute load time for the card, but that's only when you first plug it in.  so i'm thinking if you don't unplug it often (even when shut off), you could avoid the load time.

shit, 40gb on such a tiny player is pretty goddamn impressive, and imo worth the jankiness in appearance.

i really liked the original sandisk sansas, and i still use mine for working out. it's survived 4 years of rugged treatment, including multiple screen cracks and losing all the case screws. the hardware quality really went downhill on the new ones though. they stopped using aluminum and went to full plastic

I hate the enviroment:

2~3years ago there were these bomb mp3-players (like archos gmini 202, creative Zen Vision M etc...): huge space, aluminum cases and playes music ...what more did you want?

today the capacities of the players went down again and stayed at the same price... only thing new is that you can use your fingers to enlarge photos and watch videos.... WTF this makes me sooo fucking mad

:crankey:

I dont think any of those can browse the file directory.  Unfortunately that is something nearly no MP3 players can do.

right.  but if you were already considering buying it, that would be more incentive.  the 32gb card is an upgrade that can come whenever you feel like dropping the cash.  flash/ssd based mp3 players will always cost more per gb than harddrive based ones.

btw, i paid out the ass for my ZenVM five years ago.  $384 for only 30 gb.  within 2 years the price dropped 200 bucks, but that's the price of technology.

these days you can get a 120gb player for like $230.  for example the zune 120.  i know it's popular to hate zune, and given the first incarnation of utter fail, it's understandable.  but i've read some rather positive things about zune 80 (with latest firmware) and zune 120 .  of course they're harddrive, not flash/ssd, so they may be subject to harddrive issues.  but so were pretty much all of the last generation mp3 players.  if you're just looking for storage and music, i think that's about the best option available.

oh, btw, if 20gb is more than enough, you might still want to consider the sandisk sansa clip.  if you get the 4gb clip for $45, you can also get a 16gb micro sd (which doesn't need the big adapter) for about $40.  so the whole shebang would cost maybe $90 after shipping.  not bad

I have the Sandisk Sansa Clip 2GB.  I like it.  Works good in the gym.  The clip is sturdy, headphones sound pretty good, and loading music on/off is easy as pie.

ahh, you're right.  the original Clip doesn't, but the latest generation, the Clip+ does.  the 4gb model of which is only $40 on amazon http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sansa+clip+plus&x=0&y=0

i know this is 2 weeks old, but i'm wondering if you went ahead and bought a sansa clip plus?  i don't know if i jinxed my zen or what, but it had a stroke today.  lost virtually all of its memory.  what little is left plays back all sliced up.  sad, sad day.

so, i need a cheap, temporary replacement during my travels.  i can't very well travel without a music player.  that'd kill me.  i figured the sansa clip plus would be my best and most affordable option, so i'm wondering what your experience with it has been like (if you did actually decide to get it).
