The juvenile mind and something so awful.
    #11276307 -

We all know that the internet is a wasteland of images and videos of adults, children, and animals being killed and tortured. Most grow out of the "awww nasty dude hahaha" phase by the time they hit high school. You come to realize the disrespect of getting a slight rush from the end of someones existence. But some don't:

I recently was invited to chill/toke by someone I don't know very well. All was well until his brother and a couple other people started looking up that brutal shit in the smoking den. It went on for a few minutes before I could stand no more of their bullshit. I stated simply how disrespectful and immature it was. Ready to be completely outed and asked to leave, I was pleasantly surprised that some people in the group agreed! The videos were stopped and I felt a slight bit of hope for this failing and disgusting race I'm a part of.

Thoughts? Similar experiences? Other things you've stood up for at the risk of being rejected.

It's always a good feeling when you stand your ground on something and then other people agree with you.

I never thought that shit was funny. Watching someone rack their balls while skateboarding is one thing, but watching a guy get his head chopped of is another. People tried to get me to watch stuff like that and i have always been discusted with it and refused.

I've been in the same situation. I had a couple metal head friends a few years ago. We got really baked and drunk for a birthday party, and they went to watch some awful movie about people being brutally murdered and dying with shitty metal music in the background.

It was a very uncomfortable moment and I, needless to say, left.

Uuuugggh, a blemish on the face of metal. I've found more friendly people, family dudes, animal lovers, and pacifists in the metal scene than any other music scene I've been involved in. FAR more so than stoners and those who call themselves hippies.

That saddens me.

some people have a perverse fascination with exposing others to images or media that depict thuroughly unplesent things.

It's a quality on the same continuum of sadism.  And it's a power thing.
Disturbing people is the simplest way to influence them.

It's the same reason people commit and record these acts.  It is an outlet, a vie for attention, It stems from a socially-nurtured frame of moral bankrupsy and is perpetuated by need to fit in.

Those who Lack strong, moral social connections will trent to corrupt their peer group to a lower standard, setting themself as the principle.

But then, there are also those who set the principle about themself by yammering on about morals and socially acceptable snobbery.

Perhaps total reclusiveness is the last bastion of human nobility.

In other words, don't hang out with stupid people kids!

Keep this in the back of your head before reading the story: A good friend of mine was on one of the planes that flew into one of the towers at the World trade center.

I was waiting in line to see the bank teller at my local Bank of America branch at the time. There's this loud/obnoxious/rude guy behind me. While we were waiting, he yells "WOW, THEY SURE ARE SLOW HERE.(sarcastic voice)" And I'm thinking, wow, this guy's an asshole. Then he starts talking to me, and saying that "Bank of America sucks, blah blah blah, this is the only bank that will charge you for blah blah blah." and I go "oh, okay." and then he goes

"Hey, wanna see a trick?" He folds up a dollar bill and begins to show me. My heart starts pumping, and my face gets red hot with anger. I tell him straight up "You're an asshole, you know that?!" in a very loud voice and just straight up leave.

Just like about to leave now, for class. Later.

no longer in that phase but I for one think its completely natural to be fascinated by violence and gore and death

its some of the most profound stuff a living thing can witness

now, I'm not saying you should try and put it on at a party or try and gross your buddies out with it, but I don't think there is anything wrong with investigating the proof of our fragile mortality

Agreed completely. How can one not Marvel at something so brutal as an actual killing? I'm not saying you should wack off to it, but your eyes should be fucking open! Remind yourself how sick the world can be. Remind yourself that not everyone is a saint. Remind yourself that you are alive.

I don't watch snuff stuff on a constant basis but I have at times been shocked while high at something like "2 guys, 1 hammer." It makes you think and I love to think. Whether its about the cruelty of humans to another or how precious life is. I do not want to have to "shut out" anything in life. If it is a part of reality, I feel I have a right to experience it. Enjoyment is another story, but the actual experience is something else.

But then again, do you really care about that person? Do you not eat your lunch because you know a kid is starving to death in Africa? I'm not trying to be an asshole, but be real. No one here is Mother Theressa. We have all seen action movies, we have all seen death on screens. Why is it so different in reality? Why do you cheer for the "re-enactment" of it, but shun the actuality?

And like I said, I don't get enjoyment out of it, but that is the point. To show you that the real world is a fucked up place.

I have watched some, but not for entertainment. As has been said above, I feel a certain amount of fascination towards death is natural.
Life in a western society has become so far removed from any concept of mortality that we can forget that in the end we are just fragile sacks of blood and guts. I haven't watched any in a long time and have no plans to watch anymore- but they are a lesson in human mortality.

"But then again, do you really care about that person? Do you not eat your lunch because you know a kid is starving to death in Africa?"

Yes. I am sickened by my fortune because of the misfortune of others. Not every moment of every day, but it does cause an impact. Some people just don't equate someone across the ocean with their own life.

You don't have to watch snuff to remind yourself that you're alive. I know we won't be able to convince each other of anything, and I respect how you go about enlightening yourself.

But at least consider (and I'm not saying this for shock or to get personal, although I fear it may seem so) that perhaps the family and friends of the dead may find it very disrespectful that some kid on the internet justifies watching their loved ones die as having his eyes "fucking open".

I sincerely don't completely disagree with you, but what fun would the internet be without point-counterpoint?

I've never watched those types of movies.

I like violent film, but at the same time I don't really care to watch people die.

I understand your viewpoint and agree with much of it.
A good example of the different ways of viewing this material can be illustrated with this: In Varanasi, India there is a continual stream of bodies being cremated on the ghats- out in full public view. It is considered alright to watch these burnings even if you are unrelated, but deeply frowned upon to take pictures or be disrespectful while doing this. This is because the process of death is not hidden in other cultures.
In western cultures, death has been hidden so much is has been reduced to a fraction of it's original impact on us. We are protected and guarded from experiencing any aspect of human mortality in our daily lives that we can lose sense of it. I didn't watch these videos to feel alive, I watched them to remind me that I will die one day too.
It is a touchy issue, and families probably would not want their loved ones to just be out on the internet- as I said above, in India recording the death process is taboo. But where I live now, the internet is the only venue for something that I believe is ingrained in the psyche of humans. I no longer watch them, and even when I did I could never watch the whole video- but I deeply believe death is part of the mystery of life and is a natural fascination for human, despite the fact recording someones death and laughing about it on the internet is definitely disrespectful.

I could never stand to watch it any of that. I saw it a few times but every time I did I thought "Wow, that is someone's kid/mother/sister/brother/friend gone forever and being displayed for entertainment"

I'm glad I never went through that phase, and none of my friends did either. I had a friend or two tell me about rotten.com but they were just telling me how disgusting and horrible it is. It sickens me that some people find it amusing to watch someones life end. It's so dehumanizing.

How is it dehumanizing?

Someone dies, others watch out of fascination.

How is watching someone die dehumanizing?  It's the only sure part about being a human.  We have romanticized death to escape its actual significance, we have established so many irrational traditions because of our fear of our mortality...i think it seems dehumanizing simply because we have irrational beliefs towards death and we consider ourselves, humans, to be special, when really we are just as fragile and insignificant as the bugs we step on

just a thought:  dehumanize someone means to de-human them, as in take the human away, and how can you take the humanity from someone besides death

Because the way I see it you're done being a human when you're dead, you're just a bunch of useless flesh and bones with no mind.
