PS: To whoever said play with the "side of your finger"... really? That's easier for you? It's way more uncomfortable imo.

agreed.

alot of people have a tough time because they are putting too much pressure on the neck/strings. bareing down hard on your strings definitely will cause some pain.

try putting one finger on one single note, and strum it like you normally do. then keep strumming it while gradually easing the pressure off of the string. you'll realize that it takes very little pressure on the string to get a clear sound from it. then try using that same amount of pressure on entire chords.

this will ease the pain in your hand while you get used to making bar/any chords.

give it a try and see how it works for you.

Thats false in terms of classical guitar. Barre chords are used all the time in classical guitar and are easily one of the most important things to get down really well

i like what you're saying but so far i can't figure out a way to do it without applying a lot of pressure
i dunno if some peoples' index fingers are just flatter than others, but the problem i run into is that some strings get held down firmly while others do not, so i have to exert a lot of pressure to get those last couple which are underneath a bad part of my finger.

Bar chords are simple ways to follow a killer bassline and a badass vocalist seamlessly. The fact that you can tune a guitar to an open chord and do such a thing is a slant against every GOOD guitarist who's ever lived to inspire the young newbies that are the future generation.

Just practice, you're running into a problem that 100% of people run into... there is no problem really, it's just a matter of time and practice.

i see what you're saying. i used to have the same problem. once i mastered it i can bar anything in any way. like, i can bar 3 strings with just the tip of my pinky finger. just keep trying. you'll get it. your fingers will go through phases of being painful and callussed, to being pain-free and the callusses will soften up again. just keep playing every day and conditioning your fingers. it will get easier, i promise.

Start up higher too. It's hard as fuck to bar chord an f on the 1st fret on an acoustic.

I hate to ask this, but are we even talking about the same thing?

Barre chords take a while to get used to, and they are a powerful tool for all guitarists. Tuning to Open G and barring all six frets with your index finger is not what I am talking about (but I think that's what you're saying?). Do you really think all guitarists should be reduced to playing chords on nothing but open positions?

See, this one was always tricky for me.  I found it much easier to do it this way instead:

Yeah, the moveable A major shape is kind of crummy to play with past the 10th-12th fret area (depending on the guitar).

I can see how bar chords can be difficult. I myself have boney fingers and sometimes some of the middle strings dont get pressed down fully. Resulting in some fret buzz, really frustrating.  I either figure out a different way around the bar chord or practice the shit out of it, really the only way.

In time you will develop thick pads on your fingertips, that's when you know you are probably practicing enough.

Bar chords are an amazing tool in guitar theory!

Open tuning is an interesting technique also, Banjos are generally tuned in open G and I fucking LOVE to jam out on one.

All I'm saying, is that there is no "right way" to play the guitar.  If it sounds good, fucking rocket.

And seriously, practice DOES make perfect, though you'll never be perfect   every gig you play is practice for the next on the list.  And pre-gig, every hour you spend trying to master a crazy chord or a really sweet key change is another hour under the belt of a guitar master, IN THE FUTURE.

I've been playing a few years and have never got barre chords down.

I took the 'baseball bat grip' approach with my thumb over the neck.

I can do barre chords but not very well.

I should really get a few lessons just to find out for sure where I can excel.
