alright so what is the deal
is there a trick?
or do i seriously just need massive wrist strength to hold the strings down

It's EXTREMELY simple and requires no strength whatsoever.

Just keep practicing, nothing to it, it'll click very soon.

o fuck i read it as power chord first.

um, there really isn't a trick but make sure the the base of your fingers (where it connects to your palm) is the part that touches the neck.

u just gotta practice it, its not too bad.

do u use elec or acoustic

the trick is practice it a lot

don't use your wrist, use your fingers. make sure your using the side of the finger, not the flat part.

If you have an acoustic guitar than that is difficult.  Electric and classical are pretty easy.  I personally hate steel string acoustic guitars, from their sound to their playability

I'm not that great at guitar but I love bar chords, for some reason my fingers fit the frets smoothly.

Try fixing your finger placement, wrist was never a problem for me.

That can be true... a cheap steel string acoustic with thick gauge strings and a high action = total cunt to bar chords.

Steel string = hard as fuck.  Your hand will get stronger, keep practicing!

i've got a steel string acoustic and am obviously still a novice

my wrist/fingers start crampin' up somethin' fierce when i practice anything with bar chords for more than a few minutes

what i'm hearin' is: just keep doin' it 'til my hand quits bein' a bitch?

work hard at it - but don't fuck up your wrist :shrug:

learning on shitty acoustics can be very difficult. you need either a quality one with good action or an electric to properly learn i think

it's a good guitar but my fingers are weak
which makes it difficult to practice
which reduces my willpower to practice

Yeah, you can get this. Barre chords are a bitch when you're learning them, but they're indispensable once you can play them with ease. Keep hurting your pansy fingers, they'll toughen up eventually.


PS: To whoever said play with the "side of your finger"... really? That's easier for you? It's way more uncomfortable imo.

the finger pain will go away in about 2 weeks I would say

i'm the same way, i "quit" 4 times after playing for a week at a time.

just gotta keep picking it up everyday, and finger pain will be the least of your worries :lol:

If you keep practicing, your wrists and fingers will get stronger.  What kind of guitar are you practicing on?  I learned on a classical guitar, so I had to learn to really stretch my fingers, and now I can play just about any other guitar.
