Need advise, char grilled hard drive.

Ok so I managed to set my computer on fire.

The long and the short of it is that I started building a new system and the new hard drive didn't seem to be working. So I thought I'd try it on my old system. No idea what happened but I notice this burning smell and when I look down THERES SMOKE COMING OUT OF MY MOTHER FUCKING HARD DRIVE. I pull the power cable out of the back of my PC and inspect it. No idea what caused it.

So I've given it a good cleanup before taking these pictures, theres much less black and the horrible horrible smell has started to go.

The question is this.
Do I try to boot up this hard drive? (which has my operating system and much needed files on it)
How likely is it to combust do you think?

Btw I would be trying it with a completely new power supply and I would be just retrieving data, then throwing the HDD out.

id try just leaving your new psu out of the case, set it somewhere non,flammable, then hook up your hd and power it up, that way you dont fry other stuff just testing it out. also ive never heard of that happening per say.

do you have an old HDD to test the PSU that melted it with to make sure it's the PSU and not HDD?  The odds of your crap doing that unless it was a PSU issue is very very low and as long as nothing important got charred or shorted it should still work fine.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure it was the psu, not the HDD. What I'm afraid of is if I boot it up it might damage the hdd further, and I need the data on it.
The old psu is alot more damaged than the hdd, it looks like it was the cause, whatever way it happened.

the drive appears to be OK, a little charring but it doesnt appear to have
hit the board, if you have another power supply, make use of it and dont
even worry about testing that one

If you don't want to boot it, even though nothing looks damage of importance, you should learn (INCREDIBLY difficult for a first time thing, make sure you have practice first) to swap the platters into a new casing
