Destroying a hard drive for 100%.
    #7009402 - 06/04/07 07:31 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

Say you get wind the cops are coming over. Or say they're already at the door.

What can you do to ensure 100% that no data can be recovered from your hard drive? Is a hammer to the disk itself enough? A blade across the surface? Death by fire?

sounds like a scary situation.  I'd say that hammering it to pieces would almost certainly destroy it, unless the forensics investigators glued it back together

to make sure, I'd bury each broken piece in a different area of the world, with the last piece lost to Davy Jones' Locker.  it's your only hope.

A strong magnetic field close by will fuxxor up a HD so it can't be read.

I don't need to replace it. I want it to stop existing.

Problem with a magnet is you can't see the results until you hand the drive to them, so how can you be sure?

Can it be put back together and read if it's busted?

What I was saying was: get a new HD and hide your old one; use the new one as a decoy so when they take your computer you have a contraband-free HD.

I hear you, but what if they do a top down search and find the hidden one? What if some of the evidence could be recent activity on a drug forum?

I need a quick solution to the proverbial "what if" crazy situation, the one where you don't have time to warm the molten metal.

I'm picturing a situation of running into the bathroom with a harddrive and a (hammer/torch/magnet).

LOL, no that won't work. There is plenty of software to recover deleted data.

The best, fastest, most "what do i have around the house" way of doing it is taking it out and drilling a few 1/4" holes in the drive. The drill will powder minute pieces as it drills through, and I don't think it could be recovered by anyone.

After drilling, put it in a sink with scalding water for as long as you can and then dump it in the bottom of the trash can.

lol

When you delete something from your HD, Windows only deletes the index entry that points to the data. The data remains, the computer just dont know where to start looking.

If it is THAT important to you that your stressin' over what data is on your HD, then for your sake, get rid of it.

This magnet idea is plausable, but not as affective as you may think. The magnet will disrupt data, maybe even a whole bunch of it. But it wont re-arrange every bit on the entire drive. Granted, it will prolly make the drive unusable, but lots of data will still be intact. Forensics dont just plug the drive in and hope it works, they'll remove the plates and build a fresh drive, then they'll get every last peice of data that was remaining on the plates.

I worked at a computer repair place. Some Air Force guys brought in a classified laptop to be repaired. When they found out we couldn't fix it, they destroyed the drive, just the way you said. Took it out to the parking lot and beat the hell out of it with a big hammer. Good enough for military classified security.

But I wouldn't do that. Simple fdisk and reformat, plus some free drive-wiper software (do a search) would satisfy me.

Besides, if they are serving a warrant on you, they have already done so with your ISP- so anything you've downloaded, they already have a copy of that. Smashing the drive only eliminates the local copy.

In short, if there is computer evidence of you breaking the law, you're screwed. Keep a low profile.

THERMITE!!!
It's really easy to make
keep the hard drive in an external casing and bring it out back if they show up. Light it with a few sparklers, and get back. Then casually walk to the door.

Smash it with a sledgehammer into 5,000 pieces. Set the 5,000 pieces on fire. Bury each charred piece 6 feet deep, across every continent in the world.

I curently work at a computer tech place, and was in the Air Foce with a "Secret" security clearance also :-)

We destroyed disks in one of two ways...the sledgehammer method worked fine on our classified disks, or with the drills. The drills was easier, despite what you'd think.

CCleaner is a program that cleans up unused Windows registry files etc. and it might just make your computer run a little smoother. Aside from that, Analyzation/Defragmentation is your best bet.

I don't think those would affect your performance even half as much as unused Windows reg. files, but I'm no computer whiz either so I couldn't say for sure.  If you're really that concerned they sell programs (which are pricey, I believe) that are SUPPOSED to permanently eliminate information from your HD, but I'm almost certain they watch who buys these products ...

first get rid of system restore. it's a real hog and will hang onto viruses that
most scanners cant see. you can enable the viewing of all hidden files and system
restore is still hidden, you arent meant to know about it. use an old dos util
like directory freedom and you can see it, still cant access it though.

I've had a few conversations with TBI (tennessee bureau of investigation) agents about scrubber programs, and I'll tell you that running one of those programs one time won't make much of a difference.

short of physical destruction running one of these programs a dozen or so times over the same drive will make everything basically unreadable. there are only so may ways to replace 1's with 0's.

There are a few programs that can make the drive unreadable (the better ones do multiple passovers)but the problem is they take time. In a pinch and to be absolutely sure, physical destruction is the only was to go.

Just real quick...to do this right click on "My Computer" and left click on Properties. Then, click the System Restore tab and check "turn off system restore on all disks." This is assuming you are running Windows Xp. :-)

In VISTA, click START then right click COMPUTER and left click PROPERTIES. Then, click "System Protection" on the left. Now, wait a second while VISTA does a quick, few second scan. Then un-check the drives you no longer want system restore on (all of them probably). Go through the warning screen, and you're set! :-)

well, there are a few routes that i can think of from the top of my head.

1) Physical destruction of the platters. Take your sledgehammer and reduce the platters to smithereens! Data is written across such a wide swath of the drive that it would be impossible to put two and two together afterwards.

2) chemical destruction of the data-bearing medium. Strong acid will likely take care of your problem.

3) Melting. This is the fun one. If you're in a hurry, I'm sure you can set up the thermite to be ignited at a moment's notice.

4) Encrypt your data in the first place and memorize the key! Sure, they can crack your codes after a few years, but will they want to spend the resources if you're only using drugs?

5) Store your data on a thumb drive. Use this in conjunction with option #4 and possibly a few others as well. A thumb drive is small enough to be destroyed with a blowtorch, shattered, or flushed down the toilet with the rest of your stash.

There's no need. Your computer will automatically 'truly delete' old deleted files when space is needed. You can set the times and amounts for this in Control Panel if you want- but there's no need to mess with it. The defaults work just fine.

That's the best idea so far. You may still end up with ghost images on your HD, so don't use one- take it out and boot off of an use the thumb drive exclusively. Slower and smaller, but safety is unmatched!

mod your hard drive so its external, then you put a funnel in the top of it and when you hear the knock you drop in the blue stuff

Whats the blue stuff? And are you reliably submerging your platters? A hard drive needs to be sealed from outside contaminants, I know they dont come from they factory completely isolated from the outside atmosphere because of pressure concerns but they are filtered.

Lol, never mind, I didnt notice the photoshop job at first glance

I like the idea that was in one of Neal Stephenson's books. Basically the characters in the book had this special closet and built into the door frame (covertly, so no one else would know) were a series of powerful magnets. So if the feds came and seized the box, they'd unwittingly walk it out right through the magnets, wiping the entire system.

If you want to delete EVERYTHING on your hard drive quickly then you can download a program that basically gives you an extra button on your computer near the start menu. then if you need to destroy your hard drive within 5 seconds you click the button and EVERYTHING on your hard drive gets destroyed 100%. not to sure where to download the program from though.

My trick is to do all of my illegetimate activities using ig-pay atin-lay. Thus far it has worked, because the ig-pays aven't-hay ot-gay e-may et-yay

We blew a HDD up with a shotgun... Funny thing is that "normal" shotgun shells didn't do shit, even from 10 feet. They blew off the labels and some covers, but the platter remained sealed and intact.

Then, my gun loving buddy pulls out a "00" shell. I think it has "bigger balls" than normal buckshot, and THAT thing blew a clean 3 inch hole right through.

We found the platter, and you could see the indentations of about 6 balls... It was awesome.

Moral of the story... If using the Shotgun FDisk method, use "00" shells.

I thought about joining the -insert armed forces division here- to get a free degree out of it. But right when I was most considering it, they called up my cousin. Who is nearing 40 years old, had fought in Desert Storm I and II already and was nearing retirement.

You ever put a CD or any kind of metal containing object in the microwave? Long story short: It hardly looks "untampered" when it's been in the microwave. I bet this would work well though.

We used to throw cds in a microwave for like 5 seconds at a time in our old dorm. They'd flash and leave a spiderweb pattern in the cd face.. it was cool and fun to watch, but it also stank to high heaven.

an external drive with the magnetometer from an old microwave built so the output of the mag is directly against the hard drive. One flick of a switch turns data to chaos. Way too much EMP for any data to survive. It will work on any magnetic storage device from a HD to tape. Complete wipe if one has at least 3-5 minutes. The disks are destroyed to the point they cannot be reassembled and mined.
I have been thinking of making and selling HD killers that install into the case and have a software activation that will activate the magnetometer if any attempts to access unauthorized is detected.

Not quite sure- but this shop is a favorite of the local PC community, it's possible some major knew us. All I know is they were some very serious-looking Air Force brass. Three or four guys over two days. Captain was the lowest rank I saw.

And they were from the Academy- now why didn't they get some smart-ass cadet to fix it? Shit, now I'm confused...

Couldn't you just run your wires through your walls, sneakily wiring your moniter to a cpu (thats as fresh as the pope's smile) you have hidden away somewhere.

Because if they take your computer, they are just going to unplug all the wires in back and take the case, they are not going to trace down every single wire, especially if you have wired it into your wall.

Not terribly technological or sparky or anything. Just the old bait and switch.

The best way to erase ALL info so it can't be recovered is to do a low-level format. It writes 1's and 0's to every sector on every track.

Normal formats just rewrite the partition table so it doesn't know where the information is *even though it's still there*.

You'd have to use an electromagnet, as no permanent magnet is capable of hitting the magnetic power of an electromagnet. Permanent magnets can't even clear data off a creditcard.

There's proof about this on Mythbusters too. And it CAN completely destroy a harddrive in a few seconds, Mr. Slackophage. Keep in mind electromagnets of small sizes can be enough to hold onto something over 10,000x its own weight. If you were to build one powerful enough, you could probably physically damage the inside of a harddrive by causing metal parts to seperate and bend within.

I was refuting a claim that it could be done in 5 seconds with software.

You could keep a long powerful magnetic bar on both sides of your door to where the computer is and flick it on, when they walk through that door with it in their hands its done.

Maybe try to find the Microcode virus, and keep it handy for future use.

I was responding to your very first post, but I was stoned so if I misinterpreted, then my apologies.

Personally if there's something I don't want someone to find, it gets PGP encrypted with a 4096-bit key and put onto removable media of some kind (CD, USB Key). The original, unencrypted data gets cleaned up with BCWipe or something else that handles the DoD 5200.28-STD standard (or similar). If I plan on playing with data that's so sensitive I wouldn't even want it hanging out in any caches, I'll use a LiveCD so that the HDD isn't touched at all.

This way, the data has been wiped from the HDD, and the sensitive data is encrypted on media that can be physically destroyed with little effort. Torching a USB key or grinding a CD into the ground would suffice nicely. If anyone gets ahold of the media, they still need the PGP key and it's passphrase to access it.

IME, the best way to keep authorities from gathering incriminating evidence from your HDD, is to not keep incriminating evidence on your HDD.

Heh, no problem. It just cracks me up to see someone say that an entire harddrive can be reliably erased in seconds when I've personally sat through HOURS of wiping HIPAA-regulated drives. Even a 4GB drive on a 80MB/sec bus takes about a full hour to wipe to DoD standards.

I view it as if someone really wants the information there's pretty much nothing you can do other than physically destroying the drive (go to a metal processing plant and 'accidentally' drop it into molten steel) to prevent them from recovering some amount of data.
