Could I get in trouble for this? Landlord saw my mushies (I assume)

I've been house sitting the past couple weeks and today I went back to my place to get a few things, as well as check on my monotubs. As I was doing shit I noticed this ladder propped up against the wall that clearly wasn't mine. Pretty much an 'Oh shit' moment, but for some reason I didn't really care. I mean, I care, but my stomach didn't sink or anything like that, it was just like... umm... wonder if I'm gonna get in trouble for this?

So what happened if you can't guess is that the maintenance man, who is also the landlord, stopped by and I see he did some work to my bathroom ceiling. Apparently he's coming back I assume or he wouldn't have left the ladder here (as well as some other things.

Oh.. hmm, actually he left me a note (I just went to take a look because I was wondering what else needed to be done): 'Will be back Thursday to fix wall, have to let dry.' That quells a little worry as well.

So, I guess all in all he just plain didn't notice them or didn't care. How could you not notice though?! lmao. 4 big tubs with giant mushrooms growing in them, he walked right by them. Oh well I guess. I put them in the closet for now. There's still a couple bags of potting soil sitting out as well. Oh, and I realized I had a pipe sitting on my desk which he walked by, but I can see not noticing that.

Anyways, so assuming he does care and were to call the cops what should I do? Putting them somewhere else is obvious, but other than that, should I just deny it or what? Say they are edibles I was keeping for a friend? Could they legally require me to prove that? I know they can't charge me without evidence.

Based on this do you think the LL likely cared? He is foreign if that makes a difference, but I really have no idea about his personality or even his nationality. I'd guess somewhere around eastern Europe, or possibly the middle east. I don't mean to stereotype, but culture does affect peoples opinions as well as their knowledge.

edit: He also, according to this crazy ass lady who recently moved in (omg, another story though), he owns alot of property around the city. I could see him not caring based on that, as in he's kind of detached so as long as I don't fuck up the place and pay my rent he doesn't care. On the other hand I can see him just having a 'no drug' policy and kicking you out regardless because I'm just a small small portion of his net gross each month. The apartment building is less than half full too, so... maybe he needs tenants. Give me thoughts to quell the worry! AHhhh!

I don't know the guy either, your guess is as good as mine. I've met him twice and we didn't have words other than 'I need to fix your shower' 'oh ok.'

I'm mainly asking for legal advice if cops do come though. Should I just plead the 5th or make something up so I don't look suspicious? What is the best thing to say if that happens? I very strongly doubt it will based on my feelings on this, but there's no reason not to be prepared.

Unless that was an emergency repair the LL should have given you 24 hours notice of the need to enter your apartment. Since you were away you might have missed this but it is customary and required by law in some circumstances depending on the landlord/tenant agreement. Landlords should not be able to enter premises without notice and your approval unless circumstances require it such as a major plumbing leak.

On the surface it seems like he didn't notice or doesn't care but hard to say.  If you end up not getting busted make sure you thank him with a bottle of wodka!

Well I didn't see him, he just left the note he scribbled on the back of some of my mail which I had left in the bathroom. I suppose he could have written 'I'm calling the cops about those mushrooms' but that would give me time to hide it which he may not want.

It just seems to me that if he did care, and wanted to get the cops involved, that he would have called them over right then. They don't need a warrant if they have the landlords permission do they? He does own the building regardless if I'm leasing it or not.

He is supposed to give me 24 hours notice, I specifically asked that when I moved in(to the realtor, not him). He never once has though. He normally just rings the bell and often will just unlock it and come right in before I even answer lol. He's woken me up like that before and I'd have to rush to the door and ask him to come back later so I can hide all my shit (not mushies at the time, just marijuana, and related paraphernalia).

So say that he did call the cops today, how soon would they come? Do they have to get a warrant even? If they had to get a warrant to search the place first how long would that take? Is it safe to say if I don't hear anything in a few days I'm in the clear? I'll move the mushies tonight, but I won't be able to keep them there for very long until they have to come back here.

One tub I will probably be picking tomorrow. The other two though... oh I only have 3, I said 4 earlier (can't count), but the other 2 haven't even pinned yet. Tossing them isn't really an option. I'm able to keep them elsewhere, but only until Saturday night.

if the building is only half full then he needs your rent and probably won't do shit. I would have them disappear before tomorrow though. He may have even noticed the tubs and not realized the mushrooms were illegal.

dude my mom found mine in the guest house i live in. i told her they were the "legal kind". hahaha

honestly i would probably hide them in the closet like you said. at least for the time being

If the cops knock on your door they cannot come in with a Warrant or with the landlords permission.  The landlord, get's your money, if you leave he'll lose your money, why even bother.

landlords and maintenance men see weed bags, pipes, bongs, roaches, etc. all day long. very few are going to care that they are in the house. mushroom grows are weird looking and I don't think that most people would know what they were looking at without big open mushrooms sticking out from the substrate. If the police were going to come they would have probably been there already. I think your fine but if you have another SAFE place to put them you should.

I actually grew when I lived with my parents and I had 2 tubs, just like now, up against my wall for a few months. They were beside a dresser, but the 2nd tub was overtop of it I believe. I didn't really hide it at all, I had just gotten so used to it and my parents never came in my room. My parents, nor my friends even, ever noticed they were over there. The only reason I feel like he had to of seen these is because there's big white balls of polyfill sticking out all around which would draw more attention than some tubs you might otherwise dismiss. The ones at my parents weren't monotubs, I just fanned them all the time.

Funny you should mention that. I can't remember who told me this story, I'm not sure if it was a friend in the situation or if another friend told them or what, but this exact thing happened to them, with pot, but worse.

Some guy was growing a pot plant, it might have even been flowering at the time (and thus really smelly). Either way it was a good 3ft tall or so. He just kept it in some room underneath a tv stand or something like that, very noticeable from what I understand.

Well the guys lease was up next month so they would sometimes come by to show the apartment. Well one day he was gone, his room mate was there, but he didn't know or something I forget exactly, but they just came in in the middle of the day. The 2 people who were perusing the house actually stopped in front of plant, along with the landlord, and were admiring w/e was on top of that tv stand. They actually made some comments or something like that, but they never noticed.

Someone else told me a story where this old lady's grandson (or someone) gave her a 'plant' and she just kept it on her front porch, she didn't know what it was rofl. People came by and never noticed. One day a cop came by, walked right up on her porch, rang the bell and had a conversation with her about something (she could have called, I forget the story). He didn't even notice and walked away.

She later found out because someone else, related to her, later came over and asked why she had a marijuana plant on her front porch lol.
