Kidnap girl back with family after 18-year hell in pervert's secret jail

Aug 29 2009 Ryan Parry

THE kidnapped schoolgirl who came back from the dead after 18 YEARS has introduced her mum to the "babies" she had with her pervert jailer.

Jaycee Lee Dugard, now 29, is back with her family after her ordeal in a squalid prison camp in sex beast Phillip Garrido's backyard.

And her tearful stepdad says she still looks like the 11-year-old who was snatched by the paedophile outside her home in 1991.

Her stepfather, Carl Probyn, said: "Jaycee looks good, almost like when she was kidnapped.

"She looks very young. She does not look 29 at all.

"She told her mother, 'Mom, I've got a baby.'

"Her mom said: 'How many?' and Jaycee said, 'I've got two, they are 15 and 11 years old.'

"I don't know whether Jaycee is still 11 years old in her mind. I mean, who calls a 15-year-old and an 11 year-old babies?"

Garrido kept Jaycee in a ramshackle warren of sheds, tents and tarpaulins in the backyard of his house in Antioch, California.

The predator, known to neighbours as "Creepy Phil", had already kidnapped and raped at least one other victim by the time he made Jaycee his sex slave.

But sadly, she still blames herself for the hell he put her through.

"Jaycee feels really guilty for bonding with this man," Carl revealed. "There's really a guilt trip there."

Garrido, 58, and his wife Nancy, 54, are now in jail. Both are charged with abduction and Garrido is also accused of rape.

Yesterday they pleaded not guilty to abducting Jaycee.

The couple denied 28 charges when they appeared briefly in court in Placerville, El Dorado County.

In a bizarre interview from his cell, the kidnapper claimed: "If you take this a step at a time, in the end you're going to find the most powerful, heart-warming story."

But only a man with a mind as warped as Garrido's would describe the living nightmare Jaycee endured as "heart-warming".

He grabbed Jaycee off the street in front of her home on the morning of June 10, 1991, as she waited for the school bus.

He screeched to a halt in front of the little girl, who was dressed head to toe in pink, and bundled her into his grey car as she kicked out and screamed for help.

A woman, believed to be Garrido's wife, was with him in the car.

Garrido drove Jaycee 170 miles from her home town of South Lake Tahoe, California, to Antioch, a large suburb of San Francisco.

There, he kept the child in the filthy, rubbish-strewn yard like a dog, with only the maze of sheds and tents for shelter.

Police spokesman Fred Kollar said: "It's like Jaycee has been camping for the past 18 years. None of the children have ever been to school. They've never been to a doctor."

The sheds were no more than six feet high. One could only be opened from the outside, and at least one was soundproofed.

Jaycee had a crude outdoor shower and toilet and electricity was piped from the house. It's believed pitbull dogs were kept in the yard.

The first of the children was born when Jaycee was about 14. The second child arrived after another rape about four years later. Both times, Garrido forced her to give birth with no medical help.

Neither of the children has ever been to school or seen a doctor or dentist. Asked why he never took them for health checks, Garrido said: "We just didn't have the finances and so forth."

Garrido hid his secret world, which was strewn with rubbish and filth, behind fences, tarpaulins and trees. It could only be entered by pulling one of the tarpaulins aside.

Kollar claimed: "You could walk through the backyard, walk through the house, and never know."

But neighbours of Garrido told how police ignored their warnings about the secret camp.

And it emerged that the cops searched the house last year.

Garrido is under lifelong supervision after being jailed in 1979 for kidnapping and raping a young woman, and the search was part of checks to make sure he was not breaking his parole.

When the cops looked at the back of the house, they saw only a porch and a fence. But locals had seen and heard the captive children and told the police about them.

Erika Pratt, 25, who lived next door to Garrido, said yesterday: "He had little girls and women living in that backyard and they all looked kind of the same."

She said she called the police but they told her they couldn't go into the house because they didn't have a warrant.

Police admitted last night that they had failed to properly investigate a complaint about Garrido.

A caller in 2006 told them kids were living in tents in his yard and warned that he was "psychotic and had a sexual addiction".

A cop was sent to the house, but he spoke to Garrido outside and "took him at face value" without performing a proper search.

Sacramento sheriff Warren Rupf apologised to Jaycee and her kids and admitted: "We missed an opportunity to bring closure to this situation. We should have been more curious."

Rupf added that Garrido was paroled after just nine years of his 50-year sentence for the 1979 rape and said: "If this animal had served that sentence, he'd still be in custody."

In the end, pure chance ended Jaycee's ordeal.

On Tuesday, Garrido, a fanatic who believes he is God's messenger on Earth, went to the University of California campus at Berkeley to hand out religious leaflets and took Jaycee's daughters with him.

Campus policewoman Allison Jacobs thought he was acting strangely with the children. She spoke to him, checked his background and found that his parole conditions banned him from being alone with youngsters.

Allison told Garrido's parole officer, who summoned him to a meeting the next day. And Garrido arrived with his wife, the two girls and a blonde, blue-eyed young woman called "Allissa".

Officials questioned Garrido and "Allissa" and the truth emerged. He confessed that the woman's real name was Jaycee Lee Dugard and that he had kidnapped her.

Police found the car used in the abduction, a grey Ford Granada, in Garrido's yard.

Garrido ran a business printing cards and letterheads, but he had grown increasingly unbalanced in recent years.

He claimed to have invented a machine which allowed him to speak the word of God in a language used by angels and talked about setting up his own church.

One of his customers, glazier Tim Allen, said: "He started getting into strange religious stuff. He rambled, we kind of felt sorry for him."

Garrido's brother Ron, 65, said the pervert was "a fruitcake". He added: "My thoughts are with the poor little girl. I know my brother and I can believe he did that."

Ron said the house in Antioch belongs to Garrido's mother. She still lives there, but has severe dementia and would have had no idea of what was going on there.

Garrido's dad Manuel, 88, said his son went off the rails as a youngster after he started using LSD

He added: "They are treating him like he knew what he was doing, but he didn't. He should be treated like a crazy person."

In his jail interview, Garrido admitted his original abduction of Jaycee was "disgusting".

But he added that he had turned his life around and claimed people would be "absolutely impressed" when they found out what had really happened at the house.

He went on: "You are going to find the most powerful story coming from the witness, the victim."

Garrido said Jaycee's daughters "slept in my arms every night". He denied molesting them. Police are investigating.

The rapist also claimed he was relieved when he was caught. "I feel much better," he said. "This process needed to take place."

Jaycee and her girls are now with Jaycee's mum Terry, at a motel under police guard. Jaycee is also getting to know her half-sister Shayna, 19, who was a baby at the time of the kidnapping.

Carl Probyn, who chased Garrido on a bike after the abduction and was prime suspect in the case until this week, said: "Jaycee remembers everything. She had the right answers to all my wife's questions.

"It's a miracle we got her back.

"I gave up hope for 18 years, just went into recovery mode. Now, I just won the lotto. It's just unbelievable.

"It's sick, the way he's had her locked up for 18 years.

"It broke my marriage up. I've gone though hell.I'm a suspect until yesterday. I took three lie detector tests for the FBI but I can't knock them for what they were doing."

The abduction also destroyed Terry's life. Carl said that every year after Jaycee was taken, she would stay away from work on the anniversary of the kidnapping and spend the day at home, in tears.

Carl said he had "no compassion" for Garrido. He added: "He's had her for 18 years. Now it's our turn."

People are always looking to point the blame somewhere else... as far as i'm concerned if you kidnap someone for 18 years, you should be put to death- no matter what the reason or how "crazy" they are. The nature of the crime shows the guy is nuts, but that doesn't change the fact he's sick twisted and has no place in society. This is not the cause of LSD, this is the cause of a fucked up person with no regard for human life.

Fuck this guy.

If only we could keep the real criminals in jail and get the innocent victims of bad laws out. Seems we prefer the opposite way for now.

From what I gathered an officer went to investigate the residence but never bothered to check the back yard.  He met Garrido in the front yard and talked to him there without probing further.

fuck off, bollocks. they couldnt get  warrent even when they got reports of children being held captive, but if a police officer smells a hint of weed hes aloud to enter the house without question.

There is hardly any money for the cops in finding missing people or child abuse, drug busts are much more rewarding, even if its busting a teen with a bong and 1 gram of pot.

The other thing is, the guy got busted only because he and his daughters were speaking to the cops who approached them at uni.
So don't ever talk to cops if its drug related.

Nevertheless, this guy and his wife should be locked away forever.
