Journey
    #10842553 -

I am a biology student, and finishing up my summer quarter this week! I have 5 weeks before I go back for fall quarter. I am not obligated to do work, I am not imprisoned by debt, I don't have a girlfriend to hold me down, and my soul is longing for departure. I am writing this to help me prepare for my own trip and to inspire anyone to make a journey of their own. Any words of wisdom or advice is much appreciated.

My plan is to turn 5 weeks into an eternity. An eternity where I can spiritually grow and learn.

For the first part of the week, I am volunteering as an ecologist at Seattle's Hempfest. It's gonna be awesome, I'll get a sweet shirt, help the cause, and hopefully make some new friends.

After that, I'm packing my backpack and hitting the road on foot. I'll do 45 miles from my home to the point in the Olympic Mountain range that I will enter (2-3 days). From there I will follow a riverside route through the mountains, I will probably only want to do ~10 miles a day depending on how rough the trail is (4-7 days). I will be back in more civilized lands and roads after that leg of the journey. I will travel the remaining 20 miles to the coast (1 day). Once I'm at the coast I'll head south, and I will keep heading south until a total of 30 days has gone by. On the 30th night, my good buddy will drive down to meet me wherever my travels have taken me. We will camp for a night and then drive back home.

For water, I bring containers enough to carry 8 liters of water, that's about a two day water supply for me. I own a gravity water filter that works wonderfully. Finding fresh water sources should not be too much of a problem in the areas I am traveling in.

For shelter, I am bringing a medium sized tarp, a space blanket, a parachute hammock, and my common sense. I really enjoy making temporary shelters, it keeps the creative side of my brain happy.

For food, I will bring several pounds of dehydrated goods, enough to last me through the mountains. I know the local flora and I know how to forage for edibles. Blackberries and huckleberries are in plenty this time of year. I will bring cash so I can buy food from the markets if I need to. I plan on being on a mainly water diet and eating lightly for warmth, I will bring multivitamins to help keep me nourished.

For defense, I am currently crafting a staff from my grandparent's cherry tree. My staff is being made with love, I am going to smoke my inspiration and personalize my staff with meaningful symbols, runes, and designs. I've researched staff combat. My main concern is dogs. I am willing to give an aggressive dog (or any animal, including humans) a crack of the staff to their dome to let them know I'm not messing around. I also have a pocket knife, I can't imagine a situation where a pocket knife would be better defense than a staff, but I have one.

For entertainment, I have a pencil and journal, a harmonica, and an open mind.

I will bring my medicine pouch which holds my magical plants. There will be plenty strange days and mystical nights.

I'm ready for the rain, Washington is my home after all. I have made a hobo stove (penny alcohol stove) for boiling water, nothing like hot tea on a cold day. Fuel will be limited but I know my basics of firemaking. I want to become a god of fire, and practice makes perfect.

Most important of all, I am psychologically prepared. I feel like everything in my life is leading to this moment, this is what I am going to do and this is who I am.

I do have one concern I would like some advice on...trespassing. For the most part I'm going to camp on land that is "owned" by humans. I believe that the land is our mother and all the organisms are the children (humans are a problem child haha), there is no "owning" involved. The law and society think differently. That is not going to stop me from sleeping on someone's "owned" property. I have never slept while trespassing, is there anything I should know? I would try to reason with any landowners if they confronted me, should I run from the authorities?

I really think you should ask instead of just camping on other peoples property. Otherwise, good luck.

I forgot to mention, if you see a long haired dude wearing a hempfest shirt and carrying a large purple backpack walking down the coast. Confront that person and offer to match a bowl. Chances are that person will be me and I would love that.

Sounds awesome bro.  Well wishes to you.

I'm in a very similar situation and am leaving for a similar journey within the next week.  I'll be travelling by car for 4-6 weeks from coast to coast on a very tight budget.  If the car breaks down I'm going to sell it if I can and walk/hitchhike the rest of the way.  I expect to push my limits and learn what I'm capable of.

I'll be geographically close so if a dude with long hair in a black car that almost resembles a police cruiser rolls up, well, you'll know it's on.

Thank you for the positive vibes!

The land I'll be camping on is heavily wooded, it will be quite difficult to locate the owner even if I wanted to. Asking is a safe decision though, I'll keep it in mind.

Ocarinas are awesome, I plan on doing meditation and yoga every time I rest. I think its the best way to keep the mind, body, and soul balanced. Where are you from elementswrath? I have friends that I hike with, and I love dearly, but none of them are deeply interested in spiritual journeying. I find it more difficult to reach higher consciousness around them vs. when I'm by myself.

YoungBuck, if our paths cross, prepare to have your mind blown. It will be an occasion worthy of some Northern Lights. I know its on, you know its on. Good vibes for your journey brother!

I will have a camera, its not great, but it takes photos. The most important part of a successful journey is being prepared. Thank you.

I'm around the area, if I see you I'll take you up on the offer as well.

I love being in the woods alone.

Awesome, I hope I meet lots of interesting folk on the way, and have many stories shared. Being in the woods alone is when I feel most connected to the universe. It took many years to realize I am a child of the forest.

PDU, I have never done a trek like this before. I have always done my journeys in the mountain ranges around here, and never for more than a week. I always drive over to them as well. I am turning the intensity up for this trip. I am so excited  and I will take photos to share.

Impressive OP, it definitely sounds like an adventure, albeit a bit strenuous, at least for me.

I salute and admire you for your ambitions! Good luck.
