I'd believe it's hollow before flat! Hello, SHADOW ON THE MOON. :yesnod:

Plus, a hollow Earth would be awesome!

Round shadow doesn't mean the earth is spherical- could just be a disk.

That would only be true if the line connecting the moon to the disk earth was perpendicular to the surface of the disk earth.  It is obviously not, so a round shadow could not imply a disk earth.

Well, it certainly doesn't imply a spherical earth.

No?  I think it does.  The only shape that could cast a circular shadow for all of the various angles between the sun, earth and moon is a sphere (or roughly spherical).  Isnt it?  Ill have to think about this.

The shadow should be roughly a cross section of the body perpendicular to the sun.  The shadow is simply a projection, is it not?

A disk, a cone, a cylinder, or a sphere would all cast circular shadows if correctly aligned.

Yea, but the alignment is always changing depending on the season and day.  The shape would have to project a circular shadow at all observed alignments.  The only shape who always has a circular cross section to the sun and moon at all alignments is a sphere.  The ancients could plainly see that the sun and moon were not perpendicular to the surface (they are not straight up) and thus they plainly knew the earth was round.

I dont think Im missing anything here but you guys have me doubting myself  Ill have to think about it more.

Depends on who is casting the shadows!

Nah, you're right. It's so obvious, everybody has always known the earth was round since way back when.

Yeah.  It tickles me when people say that the ancients thought the world was flat.  The ancient Greeks not only knew the Earth was round, but measured its circumference to an astonishing degree of accuracy.

Well I think it can be partially true, civilization that had access to oceans and hight could obviously observe that the earth is round, while living in a forest or jungle that is not so easy to see.

BTW about the moon, when this is explained to me:

Then I will apologize to USA for not believing that hey obviously did something as fantastic as just going to moon just by wanting it, without any greater previous successes in space.

No previous successes? We had a couple decades of more-or-less successful launches, using everything from unmanned capsules to dogs to monkeys. Dozens of flights, then humans in orbit starting w/John Glenn.

To say it the way you said it is to ignore the reality of the situation, it just makes you look ignorant.
(Not stupid, ignorant.)

Yes. I watched the event back then. I also watched the space program develop from the late 50s: The X-15 launched from the belly of  B-52 bomber), Alan Shephard going up and coming right down *splash* when I was in 2nd grade. We watched that on black & white TV in class. Then, John Glenn made 3 orbits around the planet. By the time the LEM (Lunar Excursion Module) was packed into that Saturn rocket (which a lot of people saw live), it was very credible that they were going to cruise 240,000 miles at several thousand mph and be able to orbit the moon, separate the vehicles, land on a sphere with 1/6 the gravity of Earth, launch off the moon, dock with the orbiter, orbit for the window of trajectory, fire rockets and break lunar orbit, reach maximum thrust, cruise back home and then scarily re-enter our atmosphere, deploy parachutes, and splash down. All with a PC that ran on transistors and was a fraction of the complexity of my humble Dell. The late great Walter Cronkite misquoted Neil Armstrong due to the crackle at the end of his first words on the moon. I snapped a pic of our TV screen and recorded Cronkite on a Norelco cassette player. It wasn't a studio mockup. Lunar samples differ from Earth samples. Too much paranoia in this bogus conspiracy theory.

What I meant was that there seems to be a big gap between what USA accomplished and what is needed to go to the moon.

USA was always a step behind USSR, USSR has already sent several satellites (Lunik 1, 2, 3) to the moon, and later managed to fly around the moon orbit with lunik 4 and 5 (one of them playing "international" for the earth while in orbit) yet being one step ahead they (and consider that for a while) figured it is too dangerous to to attempt a mission with people.

Then USA sends several kamikaze satellites that just crash to the moon without ever getting in orbit (sending as much data as possible during that crash), and after that go right away and send people to the moon, manage to get in orbit, land, lift off again e.t.c.

So by lack of accomplishments I mean that great jump from being at least one step behind USSR and only managing to send kamikaze satellites to the moon, to suddenly do it right first try without previously testing it with unmanned spacecrafts.

This gap says two things, either it is great tribute to American scientists, that were able to make that great leap (risking human lives in the process), or that the whole thing was faked.

And as long as videos as I posted above exists and are unexplained there will be doubt, because I think it is more reasonable to assume that something was faked rather then assume that those scientists were genius.

If USA would have put the first man in orbit, first satellite, sent first kamikaze satellites to moon, sent first orbiting satellites to moon, sent first satellites that landed on the moon and came back, and then sent first people to the moon, there would have been no discussion, everything would be logical, but that is not what happened, hence I say that there are gaps in accomplishments.
