Orwell vs. Huxley

I appreciate this side by side comparison, but anything or anybody that argues to place one above the other is only missing out. Personally 1984 is one of my all-time favorite books, but I wouldn't go around saying one of these guys are better than the other. I really hope this doesn't turn into that.

i always thought Brave new world was quite better than 1984...

and I also thought huxley was A LOT wiser

edit: both relevent. not to knock orwell, im just saying I much preferred the stylings of huxley....

They were just fiction writers, I wouldn't put too much stock in one being better than the other.  Good stories though!

yeh actually huxley has a few essays that he wrote (AMAZING) on psychedelic drugs. I would encourage anyone looking into the psychedelic experience to check these books out before diving in.

Huxley actually had Orwell as a student when Orwell went to college. You have to look at the times though, Orwell having just wrote his book after WWII and Hitler (Super states with unlimited power).

My problem with Huxley is that he tries to portray other forms of media/entertainment as bad compared to books. It's not the form of media, it's the content. Books are only as good as the information they contain (Twilight), and that is the same for TV and movies as well. The real fear and real reality is that these medias are being filled with dribble. The fear of people would stop reading books isn't true today, otherwise why would everyone and their mom be selling one? Now, that may not be the same for Huxley, because in his time books were banned regularly.

The real question is are people taking in real substance from these activities or have we as a society become complacent to whatever catches our fancy for the moment?

But this thread sucks, when is the next season of Dancing With The Stars on?

To me, 1984 was a better book than anything Huxley wrote in terms of the force and eloquence with which it disturbed my assumptions about government and culture.  The funny thing is, as I was reading this comic, it struck me that the author was trying to make the point that Orwell and Huxley both had great insight into the future functioning of the state, and that the truth now lies somewhere in the middle - the Hegelian thesis-antithesis-synthesis of two horrible presages; so it was interesting to see that the comic's conclusion was the Huxley was correct.

I see plenty of Orwellian shit in the modern world.  Doublespeak is a reality, and most who engage in it are unconscious of the fact.  Pain and pleasure are used in equal measure to keep the masses subdued; the opiate of unmitigated sensory pleasure becomes the withdrawal of deep pain and long-term life-consuming health issues.  And even that initial sensory pleasure comes for many at the price of slaving at one or more back-breaking wage jobs or the awareness-dulling monotony of the computer cubicle.

Both men had their fingers on the pulse.

Based on that comic strip, it seems Huxley was a little more accurate and his foreshadowings of civil culture.

Orwell also wrote non-fiction.


And yes, I agree with all the sentiments voiced above as far as, Why VS.?  Seems to me we're heading towards a concrescence of the two...

It's not that one is better than the other.  It's just that Huxley more accurately described the society we currently live in.  Orwell was basically describing the Soviet Union.
