it looks pretty cool. i use chrome on my netbook, and some of the functions already make it feel like a linux desktop extension. ie., double clicking control brings up a search box that you can use to quickly filter through your files or do an online search through google, without ever opening the browser.

the desktop gadgets like weather monitor, "post-it notes," etc that come with the chrome browser also run flawlessly in comparison to the vista counterparts which require a bunch of ram and desktop real estate.

i think this will remain familiar enough that windows users won't have trouble adapting, but will also be more intuitive and allow for greater customization for those that are computer literate.

the only bad thing i see is that right now gaming is pretty much restricted to Windows operating systems because of DirectX.

I dont think the gaming market is where google is concerned, they are aimed at casual web browsing. As netbook performance increases, and power consumption dereases, they will become more and more popular. Combine that with the Cloud concept that everyone is jumping on, I see this as a very good move for Google, maybe a little late though.

This will rob so many people away from apple, when google comes out with a pretty netbook that runs for 16 hours on a charge and costs $200, macbooks will be on craigslists all over the place.

Nice.  I will bet money that it will be designed for primarily running web-based apps like google's office software, and other web based applications, keeping the actual software off of PC's and keeping them in google's data centers.  Google is taking over the world of not only the internet, but computing all together.  Mark my words, Microsoft is going to be a smaller and smaller player in the PC world as time goes on.

Google kinda freaks me out with the amount of shit it knows just through being the kingpin of search.  I REALLY don't like the idea of that bullshit streetview thing they do.

I tried the Chrome browser and thought it was mediocre.  Something about firefox... it's just all I've ever and probably will ever use.  I'm on the fence for the OS though.  Doubt I'll try it anytime soon after it comes out so I can let everyone else test it.

looks like you're right about it being built completely around their internet apps.

i like the idea for my netbook, but it sounds kind of watered down for my main comp. like other people in this thread have said, i think i'll stick with firefox on here.

I'm sure I'll stick with windows and firefox too, but netbooks are becoming a bigger and bigger chunk of the computer market all the time.  Probably 75% of regular computer users use their computer to check email, surf the web, listen to music, and watch movies.  With the "cloud" computing becoming more popular with google and other companies, people won't NEED to pay for expensive software, and won't NEED to run it on their computer.

I think I'd rather keep my own software an data, but I think most people prefer simplicity and convenience over privacy.

Streetview is great for people like me.  If I can do a 360 of the intersection that my destination is at it helps me to find the place so much better when I'm actually there.  You know how it is, always a hidden street sign, place is tucked away, you don't wanna be slow and hold traffic up.. .

I use the Chrome browser as my default and the only problem I have is with select web based apps, like trainings for work, online food menus, etc.  It's a lot faster than any other browser I've used before too.   To each his own.
