Frogs
    #10432945 -

Hey anyone on here ever raise frogs?  I am looking for a low maintenance pet and right now I don't have the space for a cat or dog.  A friend and I saw frogs down at a local pet store and they were reasonably priced and looked pretty cool.  I have never really contemplated owning an amphibian before so was wondering if anyone had the scoop.

Thanks

5-meo? I'll pass. Frogs are cool though, unfortunately frogs in eco systems all over thew world are dying off at alarming rates.Like canaries in the coalmine . . .

I was under the impression that milking a bufos glands can actually harm the frog to a point especially when done numerous times.  If so that would be cruel to your pet.  But otherwise bufo would be a cool species to have as a pet considering the psychedelic aspect.  I found one site before that offered them as singles or couples for mating but they are quite expensive.

Ya I just looked them up on line and they were like 125 bucks.  Which is a ton of cash I don't have.  They do look pretty cool though the 5meo-dmt aside.  I guess they get up to 7" long which is a pretty damn big frog.

I've been wondering about frogs lately after what happened last week.

My buddy is house sitting a huge mansion up there and he had to go out of town for a week so I stayed in this huge crazy house for 6 days. I would love to smoke a bowl and walk around the secluded property all baked. One day I was following this path through the rosebushes and apple trees. In the clearing was a cemetery. It appeared to be a burial ground for frogs! I knew one of the owners of the property is a witch but this was too weird. Each of the gravestones had a carving of a different frog! The whole setting was creepy as fuck. I felt like I was in a H.P. Lovecraft story or something. I wonder what the significance of these frogs were?

I won't lie spiders and scorpions kind of freak me out, I don't think it would be a problem if they were in a cage, but the idea that they might get loose would probably prevent me from ever getting one.

I've kept many, many frogs. There are tons of different kinds with varying levels of difficulty of husbandry.

I have had this guy for about 5 or 6 years(they can live 20+ years):

He's a Pyxie frog. He's about 4 inches long from snout to vent, but can grow 9-10 inches long and weigh around 5lbs. They're the second largest species of frog in the world.

Here's an example of a full grown one:

They eat mice and rats and are easy and inexpensive to take care of. They'll usually run you around $40 for the frog. The set up for a baby is well under $100. They don't jump much and don't smell. They're pretty sedentary animals but are cool none the less. Holding them isn't the best idea, especially when they get bigger. At the size mine is at now he could give me a bite so bad that I'd need stitches.

Other cool "big mouth" mouse eating frogs are...

"Pacman" frogs (very aggressive):

Budget's Frogs (probably the most aggressive):

I've been keeping all kinds of frogs and toads (and lizards and snakes) for probably 15 years, so if you need and advice, ask away.

Those frogs look badass Gumby!

I used to have bluetounge lizards when I was younger, I might look into getting a frog.

heh cool frogs

I kept black widows as pets lol for real, i was always spooked if they would get out into the house too but they are cool to watch. I also caught and kept brown recluse and wolf spiders which if they bite could kill or seriously mess you up, i liked to challenge my mortality that way. When I see them in my house I don't kill them, but I'm a Scorpio so I sort of bond with creepy shit like that. And they haven't yet.

Once I picked up a pine cone, flipped it over and there was an egg sac with thousands of baby black widow spiders, I put it down and didn't get bitten. So I have good karma or luck or something.

Here's some pics of other cool frogs, some much harder to keep than others:

I think that's enough for now. If you have questions about any of them like what they are or how hard they are to keep, feel free to ask.

Wolf spiders won't kill you if you get bitten by them, it just hurts like hell and the bite area may turn black/blue/purple and you may loose feeling there for a while. I would know, I've been bitten a few times.

Brown recluse bites on the other hand, can kill you. Or at least lead to amputation.

I saw someone who got bit by a wolf spider and there leg swelled up really really bad, maybe they were allergic to it but it was nasty looking.

I don't have them anymore but sometimes I see spiders crawling around but I won't do anything, they haven't bit me as of yet. My shed was full of brown recluses years ago in my old house I used to go in there and catch them I was a fucking weird kid.
