John Walter's debate has many flaws and makes assumptions. It is like the "tattoo and violence" argument.

"People who die violent deaths often have tattoos. Therefore, if you have tattoos, you are more likely to die a violent death. If we ban tattoos, then fewer people will die violent deaths."

The assumption is that tattoos are necessary (and a cause) for the violent deaths, which is obviously not true. If everyone got tattoos, the rate of violent deaths would be unaffected. The truth is most people who die violent deaths are often involved in gang activity, and gang members often have tattoos. The tattoos are a by product, not a factor.

It is the same with marijuana and crime. Marijuana is present in the criminal underworld, not because of the drug itself, but prohibition puts it in the hands of criminals. So it is no surprise that when the criminals get arrested, they often have marijuana in their systems.

The Harvard economist made a good point: If marijuana keeps getting stronger and more available, where is the supposed increase in crime?

He did do a good job with the rebuttle, but Walters has so many problems mith his arguement he could have been ripped apart.

I wonder how many of those people who do violent crimes have alcohol in there system?

we need legalization!!!!!  I hope within the next 5 years it will be fully legal, maybe that is a pipe dream but it seems very possible with the internet age.

government can't stop all the free information floating on the interenet and with all the news reports and studies........

I believe legalization is closer then it has  ever been and the momentum will not be stopping any time soon!! :bigblunt:

Politicians are asking for debates; for us to reassess drug policies. I feel they are doing this because they know who will win the debate, but don't want to openly say they support legalization. Once the "debate" starts, where we discuss countries which have legalized (Arnold style), the prohibitionists won't be able to fall back on their propaganda. There is a lot of research on the decriminalized countries, and any economist would know how to discuss the facts.

I do, however, feel the prohibitionists will try to twist things around. I have a copy of an Op-Ed in drug policy reform where the writer suggests drug policy in Amsterdam is a dismal failure, and others where they assert a discussion is needed but "decriminalization or legalization should not be an option" :wtf:

This is hardly surprising. On the DEA's website, there are many people who assert alcohol prohibition worked. They say use was lower and alcoholism was less prevalent during prohibition. They neglect to discuss people hid their use and alcoholism, and don't mention the violence and purity standards associated with the black market. Twisting history, FTW!

If they even try to go on those claims, a good 95% of the population will know thats bullshit (Especially people in the south). Someone also needs to pull up old prohibition ads, and compare them to PDA ads. There is an old one which shows "the progress of a drunkard" as they start drinking socially, reach a high point, and eventually becomes depressed and commits suicide. All it take is one debate and things may change.

I wonder if Obama will have the balls to start up a serious debate in his second term :confused:  I wont count on it though after his laughing fiasco at the top question on his website three times in a row!  It's pretty funny but I think OBama is afraid to do more online town hall meetings because of how popular marijuana questions are :omgawesome:

Is everyone just retarded? I can't believe anyone can still buy these fucking stupid arguments.

I HAVE NEVER, ONCE, seen violence as a result of cannabis use, EVER! I've been smoking everyday for 10 years and know a very large amount of smokers.

On the other hand, I bartend to support my university costs, I see multiple fights and sexual assaults every single shift at one establishment. I tell you, I've never seen a women get glassed in the face, ripped to shreds and blood pissing everywhere from a cannabis smoker :mad:

WHAT THE FUCK.

How can someone argue that cannabis causes violence.
