mysticism is a journey, not a destination, and it can be embarked upon from any perspective, so long as you're willing pay attention and accept truths as you arrive at them.  A good primer is "How to Meditate" by Lawrence LeShan.  While its primarily about meditation, he presents it from a non-biased mystical perspective, and does a very good job of it.  I would recommend it to anyone of any belief.

If you are on the path of self-realization you will regognize that you have a body and a mind.
The U is eternal.

Don't ever believe anything!
You have to experience it.

I didn't mean to evade your question, deCypher...I merely didn't know the answer! lol I started thinking about this heavily for the next few weeks (last few weeks). I realized that I have no rational basis upon which I can see "myself" continuing after death. Looking backing on the question now, though, I see it a bit differently. If we are able to come into contact with "life forms" who are available to anybody (baring time constraints) it could be that these "life forms" are indeed existing outside of ourselves, and if so, it gives rise to the possibility that we have that capability.

I can see how these "life forms" could be viewed as archetypes which are solely anchored within human-specific consciousness, which would kill the idea that they themselves even continue to exist. I'm not sure how this idea could be more rigorously tested...possibly if these "life forms" were seen to evolve or change.

I came out of this realizing that I can't logically see my life extending...and I'm actually pretty happy about that! My logic will keep me upbeat and happening all the time seeing as how this is my only life....but the way I really see it is that I *feel* like life will extend. This is something that has always been with me and it's something that I've never doubted. It could very well be the product of my Catholic upbringing, instead of some subtle communication with the "other side", but in some ways this idea helps me out. I like having both ideas close at hand.

Thanks for the inquiry, deCypher! (sorry for the lag on reply)

Unfortunately I think these entities are only subconscious manifestations of the mind (which is not to deny their reality or the importance of the messages they give).

Teilhard's Omega Point might be a possible avenue for continuation of consciousness but I am a bit skeptical.

I think relinquishing all beliefs, maps, models, views, and concepts is a necessary part of mysticism.
Check out the J. Krishnamurti vids on google video, his 4-hour 1970 talk in Sand Diego is really good.

Yeah...the further along I go...the more I give up and put into my uncertainty basket. Sometimes I pull things out at a later time and find out they have been tumbled into new entities...or disappeared completely!

I have "On Fear" by Krishnamurti, which is dang good. I bought it on the assumption that fear is our most limiting factor. I didn't know he had videos on youtube, though. Thanks middle man for the tip off.

Yes. 'Belief' is a matter of holding an intellectual construct in mind. The mystical lends a transcendental perspective, usually embodying the 'objective' psyche which perceives itself as timeless, disincarnate and non-egoic. The 'objective' psyche is not our possession but exists, ostensibly, as the eternal Ground of Being. It may be the 'ocean' of consciousness whereof our individual egoic 'wave' arises, but 'It' alone is eternal, not the temporary ripples which calls  themselves deCypher or Markos. 'It' is our 'true Self' inasmuch as 'It' gives rise to us, but we do not possess it, 'It' is our common Ground. The soul usually pertains to the vital life of a human being including our idiosyncratic personalities - the spheres of Yesod, Hod & Netzach on the Qabalistic Tree of Life. We encounter this 'true' Self when we rise to the sphere of Tiphereth (according to the model) when we cross the Veil of Paroketh and experience ourselves as 'The Witness' which possesses the personality-body instead of the former perception of be personality-body that we 'believe' has a spirit. It is that oft-repeated Shroomery wisdom which says that 'I am not a human being having a spiritual experience, but a spiritual being having a human experience.' It is a matter of a radical shift in perspective.

When such a shift occurs without physical death following, one is said to have experienced the mystical, and a genuine experience will change the experiencer, if the experiencer allows his/her life, which was dissolved, to constellate around the 'true Self' discovered in the experience instead of gravitating to the egoic self of the personality-body. A higher Center will become the core of the mytic. This is the meaning of 'twice born' in India or 'born again' in a Christian context. This is my best current take on the question you posed.

A soul consisting of the memory of a several decades of temporal experience, suspended in a non-temporal, non-spatial condition (afterlife) would surely be Hell!

Very interesting response!  What reading would you recommend on the Tree of Life?

I would highly recommend The Mystical Qabalah by Dion Fortune.  I also thoroughly enjoyed Gnosis of the Cosmic Christ: A Gnostic Christian Kabbalah by Tau Malachi.

The moment the trascendental experience conforms to a thought, the experience is over.
I have never experienced a soul outside of hearing about it from other people. Yet I'm moved to tears by compassion, burned to bliss by empathy, humbled by the overwhelming gift of life, and silenced by the awareness of being unaware.
