Yeah, there's definitely more to it. And I guess a lot of junkies go to shooting because it's most efficient/intense. :shrug:

Well, the movie isn't set in present day and I didn't think heroin always came pure enough (or whatever) to snort. Which would partially explain why she gets so fucked up.

H has to be a certain purity to snort it.  When it is injected, an extraction is pulled into a syringe, leaving most of the unhealthy additives out.

She gets so fucked up because she did a huge line of it.
If its good heroin (which the dealer character goes through so much trouble to maintain that it is good shit, at 500 a gram) then doing a line like you're doing blow would kill you.  Good smack, you can do a bump thats the size of a match head and get fucked to the edge of consciousness.

The nosebleeding thing is just for the movie, it wouldn't happen.  Or maybe she had just been snorting so much shit that her nose was already raw about to bleed.

Not really...if you snort enough of it, then you will get high as long as some is able to get into your mucus membranes and then into your body...the rest will be swallowed and if you swallow enough, then you will get high as well.

The reason people used to never snort it is because it was too expensive to buy enough impure heroin to snort.  But if you were loaded, you could afford to snort it...like eric clapton did in the 80s.

The only impurities that don't make it into the extraction are the non-water soluable ones, it is still a pretty impure solution that people shoot up.
