Free DVD playing software?

Anyone know of a good piece of DVD playing software? VLC doesn't seem to be playing any of my DVDs very well (lots of skipping and audio clipping).

Really? I was going to suggest VLC since it does great with all of my DVD's and other media on both Mac and PC.

You could get a serial # for Cyberlink PowerDVD if you are willing to go that route.

what OS? it's probably an encrypted dvd, might require some extra libraries...

Windows media player?

VLC is amazing, it might be whatever you're trying to play.

OR you have a shitty computer

Also check your DVD players software CD if you still have it. Usually they include some sort of DVD player with at least a free trial.

this has to be the problem. my computer is fine. my OS is windows xp standard.

do i need some weird XVID plugin or something? or do i need a newer/more expansive version of VLC?

I've never had a problem with VLC. Have you checked that your disc isn't scratched / tried putting on a different DVD?

Yah, if it were because it was encypted you just wouldn't be able to play it, it wouldn't just skip.

VLC is generally a very good player, the only free one I'd bother recommending for DVD's. It's likely your PC is just too slow would be my immediate guess. You could try checking under the settings and changing the output method. That's the only other thing I can think of. Make sure you have nothing else running in the background too.

i've found (on linux at least) that copy-protected dvds tend to play but skip a bunch unless you have libdvdcss2 or whatever installed.

i don't know if they make mplayer for windows, but whenever i have a file that vlc struggles on, mplayer seems to work.

i am laughing at the idea of my computer being too slow, not at your recommendation  :wink: i have a 3.0 quad core 4 gigs ram...i have a pretty good system; it must be something with my DVD player now at this point.

Is it only one dvd that it happens with? Maybe it's scratched. Make sure your dvd drive is running in dma mode too. Google it to find out how, I don't remember right off hand.
