Normally, I think paranormal stuff is mostly bullshit. The M&P forum is a source of amusement to me. But I can't shake this memory.
I was 9 or 10 when it happened one evening. We had just finished dinner and my brother and I went to watch tv in the living room. Normally, our parents would have followed, but they were still at the table talking and in a low voice as to not be heard. Being the curious boy who had to know everything, I went back in the kitchen to listen in. I was abruptly told to go back in the living room that they were talking privately right now. So now I was miffed and wanted to know more than ever, but had to retreat to the living room.
I sat on the couch facing the kitchen so I could watch them and try to glean something from their conversation. I watched a minute and couldn't get anything and turned my attention to the tv. My brother was laying down on the floor in front of it watching and I was suddenly struck at how engrossed he was by it. Thinking maybe I could really concentrate on them and hear better, I tried again. I sat there for probably close to 10 minutes intently studying them, watching their body language at first but changing my focus to their mouths thinking that would help me to hear better.
All of the sudden I thought I heard what my mom was saying, but then I couldn't. I refocused and after 5 more minutes or so, I was starting to get pieces of what they were saying. I kept my focus, straining to hear better when the whispers I was hearing quickly turned to normal sounding conversation. I was startled, but able to keep my attention on them and realized that something was weird. I could tell they were still whispering, but I was hearing them like I was right there. Closer than being right there really, it was like they were speaking in my head. It quickly became so disconcerting that I didn't care what they were talking about anymore and my focus on them was lost as I tried to focus on voices I was hearing.
I began to hear more and more voices and quickly became overwhelmed. It was deafening, like hundreds of people were talking to me at once and I was absolutely terrified. Surely someone else heard this but looking at my brother first, then back at my parents I knew I was experiencing it alone. I just lingered there, trying to make sense of what was going on, but I couldn't. I even got up and walked to my bedroom, but the voices remained. It was so much at once that I couldn't really understand any of it nor did I really want to. After a few more minutes, I wanted it to stop but it wasn't.
I realized I wanted, no needed, my parents and headed for the kitchen. I started to think about how I would explain this to them and the voices began to quiet. As I slowly walked toward them, the voices faded. With my fear subsiding, I sat back down on the couch and started watching tv. After a minute or so, with the voices getting ever more quiet, my brother turned around and said something about the show thinking I had been there the whole time watching it with him. As I struggled to answer him, the voices finally stopped. I never said anything about it to my parents or anyone for that matter.
It remains as one of my most vivid memories from childhood and one I've never really understood. I don't remember if I knew what telepathy was at the time, but I do remember not making the connection until several years later. Whether or not that is what happened I couldn't say, but will always wonder.
